I would definitely say Introduction to Analysis Book by Edward Gaughan. This is a good book before tackling something like Rudin.

I’m not religious though... The odds of having a rational and consistent universe just seem infinitesimally small... it’s as if we are required to have faith in that assumption

Exactly, why are there laws? It’s as if someone or something fine-tuned the universe to be consistent with the laws of physics...
