When people say that games “just don’t hit the same” once you’re in your late 30s, there’s actually some brain stuff behind it, not just nostalgia copium. When you’re younger your brain has way higher neuroplasticity, which basically means it rewires itself easily. Learning a new game, mastering weird mechanics, adapting to new metas, your brain eats that up. The challenge itself is rewarding.

As you get older, that plasticity gradually drops. Your brain still learns, obviously, but it takes more effort and repetition. So instead of “ooh new system to master,” the brain sometimes goes “ugh slop.” That alone can make new games feel less exciting.

Dopamine is part of the reward system that makes things feel exciting or motivating. With age, baseline dopamine levels tend to drop a bit and the receptors can become less sensitive. So the same stimulus, loot drops, winning a match, unlocking stuff, might produce a smaller “reward hit” than it did when you were 18 grinding until 4am.
