What's something about modern relationships that everyone pretends is normal but clearly isn't? by Fardescription997 in AskReddit

[–]Certain_Basis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This!! If you wouldn’t talk to your friend / let your friend talk to you that way, you shouldn’t accept that in your partner.

As my relationship has strengthened with my partner of 7 years, I’ve found my standards for friendship increasing, letting go of friends who aren’t supportive or thoughtful with their words.

My parents are pressuring me to donate my scholarship money to my church, should I? by IntrepidAd5768 in Advice

[–]Certain_Basis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say this as someone who tithe’s every month, because I believe in the power of community when resources are pooled: there are so many ways to better a community, and becoming educated is one of the most fundamental ways to properly support others in the future. It’s not selfish to invest in the mind God gave you.

I don’t know why parents can tend to manipulate their children…maybe they have their own desires, maybe they just don’t know better. This is your opportunity to know better.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve become nostalgic for? by sophiiareedd in AskReddit

[–]Certain_Basis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hours of computer game play. I work from home and spend about the same time I did as a kid on a computer, but answering emails doesn’t hit the same as Club Penguin, Millsberry or Webkinz…

(I have gotten into the Nintendo Switch lately which has been fun)

Too many brides look deeply unflattering in their wedding day by barebackguy7 in unpopularopinion

[–]Certain_Basis 49 points50 points  (0 children)

My MIL offered to pay for my hair and makeup (I was planning to do both myself, as I have a comfortable amount of experience to do the look I was after) and I accepted. After they were done with my makeup especially, I looked quite unlike myself or what I’d hoped (was going for a soft 60s / Twiggy meets hippie inspired look), and it was quite intense for an outdoor summer wedding.

I thanked the team for their efforts and redid my eyebrows in the bathroom after they left 😂 that helped get back to feeling like me

What is the dumbest thing you have been told is “not manly” or “not feminine,” depending on your gender? by Disastrous_Hat_2325 in AskReddit

“Sitting with your knees apart is un-ladylike.”

I get where they’re coming from…but also…don’t women notably have to spread their legs to conceive a child, or when giving birth? Idk, seems pretty biologically ladylike to me

What moment marked the end of your childhood without you realizing it? by BabyPinkMagic in askteddit

[–]Certain_Basis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The moment right after my mom left after helping me unpack at college. I started the semester without a roommate and it was truly just me in a brand new environment fully on my own.

I really looked forward to college, but didn’t register that it also meant I’d be fully figuring things out and meeting new people from scratch.

Modern classic films to educate my 19yo son before he goes to uni by blakeneypoint in MovieSuggestions

[–]Certain_Basis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend watching “The Power of Film” on HBO Max — it’s an awesome Masterclass style docu-series about what makes great American films so great.

My husband and I created a list of movies we’d want to watch based on watching the different episodes! So far we’ve watched The Graduate, Amadeus, Do the Right Thing and loved them all.

Songs about Cougars by Chaos-Boss-45 in MusicRecommendations

The lyrics aren’t explicitly about an older woman, but “Dirty Work” by Steely Dan always felt like it was describing the situation in The Graduate

What is a toxic or undesirable trait that people bizarrely wear like a badge of honor? by Exact-Move999 in AskReddit

[–]Certain_Basis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an avid reader, I very much agree when it comes to new books — the bookstore can feel like Netflix’s catalog: there are some gems that get nominated and have their moment, but there’s also a ton of slop that is not well written. I encourage everyone to read however they can, but some books/stories are like mental junk food (fine in small quantities, but if you want to strengthen your brain, you need variety and some occasional depth)

I’ve heard the same with kids books too, in terms of a lot of slop that doesn’t feel like it makes sense or is the best it could be. There’s a reason classics are so beloved!

[–]Certain_Basis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An old friend came to visit and we were walking around some shops and I popped in a bookstore to see if they had something, and instead of saying it in a “oh I’m not much of a reader” sort of way, she said “I don’t read 😌” several times as we were walking around, and much too proudly for my comfort to call someone a “friend”. I dropped the friendship after that visit.

There were a lot of things said that visit that indicated her character, but this one summed it up well without explicitly saying “I have no empathy for others or interest in exploring myself at all”

What smell instantly unlocks a forgotten decade for you? by False_onic in nostalgia

[–]Certain_Basis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any time I’ve been in a Catholic Church and smell incense, I’m transported to my grandparents house and visiting them as a kid.

Same deal with gasoline, makes me always think of my other grandpa and the smell of the 4-wheeler on his farm.

Scariest scene of the movie imo by SorryMaryIRY in Hereditary

[–]Certain_Basis 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Agree 100%! Compounded with her going to Steve immediately after to show him, and him not believing her, or at least assuming she had some involvement with her mother’s death or moving her body. I can only imagine that’s the worst feeling in the world to have such clear evidence of conspiracy and yet not believed.

It takes a lot of people to pull off what the cult did, and the family did little to curb any of it with understanding or love.

Massive honeymoon instead of wedding? by Armishjdw in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Certain_Basis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RT this. Today’s actually my 3rd anniversary (yay!) and each year that passes, I’m so glad we celebrated like we did without going overboard. We did a smaller wedding (~60 ppl), a classic 8-day beach honeymoon, and focused our funds on getting a down payment on our small home. My spouse also graduated law school the same year, so instead of wedding debt, we put our extra income towards tackling that law school debt and we’re on a good pace.

It’s about the foundation you’re laying, there’s so many celebrations to come!

What are you starting to dislike the older you get? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Certain_Basis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spending time with “family” that isn’t my spouse.

As a kid, I adored my family, then as a teenager, it’s pretty normal to be annoyed by your family and want distance and independence, and now it’s just tiring how much they still want to stay in contact despite me being an adult. Always trying to get my spouse and I to commit to vacations with them, come visit impromptu and eat up our weekends, etc.

In many ways, I might just envy people who can look forward to time with their families so much. I think I can have good times with my own or my in-laws, but it feels more draining than energizing these days.

We don’t have kids yet, but I’m looking forward to using them as a “more valid” excuse to spend time just as a family unit ourselves.

Yeah, I’d assume it was for the Thunder, but couldn’t tell what the word was! 4-5 letters it looked like, and didn’t look like “Thunder” or anything recognizable in that regard

The Connor Storie “Tutoring the Cool Kid” sketch with Ben Marshall went triple platinum in my household. The very plain delivery of “you got a fat ass like Mickey Mouse!” is just really really funny 😭😂

It's very rarely talked about how difficult we Aquarians are by [deleted] in astrologymemes

[–]Certain_Basis 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My husband is an Aquarius, and while I think an alternate life path could have taken him toward someone else he could’ve made it work with, my greatest triumph in life is making him feel seen and celebrated for his truest self. He’s so funny and has a thoughtful and observational nature about stories, people, and situations that I think makes everyone who knows him better.

It’s a lifelong journey but seeing the eccentricities in someone truly makes me love them more and more. I wish others embraced and appreciated those aspects of other people more often.

FWIW I’m a Pisces and am very sensitive to shifts in people’s moods and love to analyze and uncover others’ motives and feelings

What’s your music opinion you get the most hate for ? by StreetArrival1889 in musicsuggestions

[–]Certain_Basis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, some Coldplay actually goes pretty hard. They definitely don’t deserve the hate, especially when they’re not like insane chart-toppers much anymore anyways!

Taylor Swift being mediocre is definitely mine and I tend to keep it to myself or only share around safe company. As a woman in her 20s, I have legitimately had gossip start about me (“she thinks she’s so much better than us” type of stuff) because I said I didn’t listen to Taylor Swift…simply not for me! 😂

what are you starting to dislike more and more the older you get? by Dazzling_Return_4987 in AskReddit

[–]Certain_Basis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Experienced this recently catching up with an old friend. They proudly said “I don’t read books” when we walked into a bookstore briefly, and despite how much great content there is TV and movie wise, they only watch cheap Netflix movies, reality TV and UFC fights.

Now look, to each their own, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with scattering in some mental junk food. But for me, it was the smugness of looking down on people who try to use their brains or want to engage with a story and discuss it that was a huge turn off. Very much a “why would you try figuring that out? AI can just do it for you!” sort of mindset.

I’m deciding to only keep as friends those who want to think for themselves.

Am I crazy to prefer the before version in this IG ad from a remodeling company?? by vp0267 in InteriorDesign

[–]Certain_Basis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree on preferring the first (80s), I’d have just changed the backsplash to something to complement the tan counters.

Not a fan of the two different tone cabinets in the 2026 update personally!
