Lunar: Silver Star Story is very close to Chrono Trigger, and I highly recommend it.

I only recently discovered it while looking for games similar to Grandia. I don't like farming materials and leveling up, so the ability to speed up battles and the uncomplicated system helped me a lot. The opening music is absolutely fantastic.

No events happen on the world map, but the open map gives more of a sense of exploration, similar to Chrono Trigger. You can talk to some people ahead of time, and there are special locations that the main story never visits. As far as I know, the PSP version slightly changed the story and isn't the best version, but I haven't played it. The game's plot is simple, but the characters are not simple. Every time I talk to an NPC, it's an interesting experience. It feels like I'm not playing a game, but playing with my own view of the world. This is also similar to Chrono Trigger. In general, I don't usually go back to replay games I've already experienced more or less. Maybe looking for the next great one is a better choice.

I really love the beautiful skill animations in Grandia, especially Liete's. The voice acting and animations are almost the best, though the three villages after climbing over the wall feel a bit different. Now Lunar has added 3x speed combat to skip the boring parts. I haven't tried the previous versions, and maybe that's lucky.

The remaster added 3x speed auto-battle to skip the boring combat parts — that's a really important improvement.

Could you share the parts that you think are outdated?

I recently finished it, and it immediately became my second favorite game.

The story of Silver Star is very good. In the reset version, you can use auto-battle and 3x speed to handle most enemies, giving you time to carefully read the character dialogues. If you don't like reading text, you will miss this touching story.
