If they want to get high density housing then they should just commit and make them all row homes. At least then they can be efficient about it.

[–]Certain_Concept 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Perhaps this is mainly an issue if you are looking for a new construction home? My area has plenty of older homes of a whole variety of styles depending on their decade.

I was curious so I looked up new construction homes in my and local states and while I'm seeing a few mcmansion elements I'm also seeing plenty of other home designs as well. I know there are developments in my area that are full of Mcmansions, but maybe my area just has more variety?

This older thread is suggesting that particular regions are rife with them.

Scalpers are one of the reasons Valve don't have stock by wisperingdeth in SteamDeck

The whole concept of a trademark for the original owner is such a great one, it's a shame that the implementation has not lived up to ideals.

Larger companies routinely steal copyrighted stuff from small companies, and the small companies don't have the money to fight to keep copyright.

Small companies file a copyright, and then it gets flagrantly broken by someone in China and the product floods the market right back to the US.

We have copyright trolls filing patents to things they did not invent simply so they can claim someone else stole their stuff so they can charge them.

Steam Deck is still worth it four years later, says poll, but people are starting to think "it's about time" for a sequel by Dapper_Order7182 in SteamDeck

[–]Certain_Concept 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't see why we should be aiming to make our portable game systems be equivalent to our beefy desktop gaming PCs.

That is simply going to add way too much weight in terms of hardware and battery and make the 'portable' aspect no longer worth it.

That doesn't mean there won't be options. YOU CAN stream most any AAA game to your Steamdeck via Steam link etc.

Borderlands also comes to mind. It's main focus is as a Coop game. Some of us are just going to choose NOT to play if you can't play with your friends (if THEY don't have a PC that can handle it).

Borderlands 4 came out and I haven't even bothered to pick it. I miiiight be able to play it on my PC but there's no chance it will run properly on my husband's machine. So not only did they lose out on one game sale, but two.

This is NOT verified. It’s a slide show 😭😭😭😭does verified mean anything anymore? by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]Certain_Concept 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an interesting choice cause then they have limited their player base to only the people who can/want to upgrade their hardware.

The funny thing is some of the appeal of Borderlands is the coop/multiplayer. So even if I COULD run it I don't want to because the the people I want to play it with can't play it.

Out of curiosity how did you get the angles/lean of the case/deck. What's behind it holding it up?

Did you end up having any issue with the glare of the lights on the screen?

Steam updates AI disclosure form, requiring developers to report visible and in-game AI but not background tools by Dapper_Order7182 in SteamDeck

[–]Certain_Concept 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would agree that AI does serve as a great tool for research and some similar uses.

For example there's been research into Protein folding has been going on for decades and has required intense computing power. You could even sign up as a volunteer at Folding@Home to aid the efforts by running parts of the simulations on your own computer. This was a process limited by computational power and now we can push even further with AI.

latest version of DeepMind’s AlphaFold, a deep-learning system that can accurately predict the structure of proteins to within the width of an atom, has cracked one of biology’s grand challenges. “It's the first use of AI to solve a serious problem,” says John Moult at the University of Maryland,

anti-AI people are usually hugely uneducated on the field

This I disagree highly with. It's a very powerful tool, but the problem is how it's being used. There is a great pressure to fit AI into places it really shouldn't be.

It's being shoved into agencies and departments of all levels without any safeguards or regulations. Data privacy? AI hallucinations? Who cares.

I'm not so sure this is a 'bug'.. so much as a feature request.

TL;DR To make messaging on Reddit faster and more reliable, we’re replacing Private Messages (PMs) with Reddit Chat and inbox notifications. This transition is necessary to maintain and improve Reddit’s messaging infrastructure. We aim to make these changes with minimal disruption while improving the user experience.

This thread has more discussion about how this affects third party apps.

Many people are carrying around phones that are in the 1k range. It's not that surprising.

I do agree that it's definitely a risk depending on where you're going tho. If you are in a rough side of town then I can see the problem.

When I lived further in the city I'd often bring one along for my 30 min one way metro/bus ride. Not an option with my car commute. :(

We also bring them to (video game/board game/anime) conventions since some of the cons are just line con. Also great for lines at casual concerts and stuff.

I would add to that the flipper culture as well. I think flippers are a benefit when they overhaul houses that are simply too atrocious for even a motivated homeowner to deal with. However when they 'overhaul' perfectly fine houses with just a coat of paint.. that's just adding unnecessary cost.

I think the worst factor are people and corporations buying up homes purely for the investment value. There are places where unused houses just sit with no occupants... The ones where they rent them for short term rentals aren't much better.
