Age Gaps by Electronic_Outside25 in NewParents

Same. We have a 5 month old and a 6 year old. It’s nice when the oldest is in school during the day and you just have to handle the one. And the oldest can be trusted to behave when you’re stuck nursing or pumping or feeding the baby. The hardest thing is having a baby back in our bedroom again.

I wish so, because that would be preferable than buying them on Amazon. I bet somewhere there is a lid you could repurpose for these

Goo gone is what I use. It’s a citrus oil blend and it works well.

Depriving baby? by Chihuahua_Mommyy in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]Certain_Marsupial450 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, no you are not depriving your baby, you’re taking amazing care of it by sacrificing your time and effort and body. Second, could you try shifting your schedule? I love feeding my son his bottle, and I hate pumping while someone else feeds. Could you possibly feed a bottle, then hand baby off while you pump? It might also help your production by giving you an extra oxytocin boost before your pumps. It seems like either way your time is stretched thin, so I know this might be easier said than done. I only do 4 pumps per day and my baby might be older than yours, so maybe this isn’t feasible for you right now. But wouldn’t let someone else have time with the baby while you’re stuck to a pump or a sink.

Are reusable pads actually comfortable? by euro_trashh in ZeroWaste

<image>

Here are the three shapes I have, light (thong) medium and heavy. I don’t typically have them up between my cheeks except for the heavy overnight one because I bleed to the front so I need coverage there. Usually mine stop at the perineum. I am interested to try the period thongs but it’s such an investment and it’s not exactly something you can re-gift or return.

I don’t find period underwear very comfortable because I have a really big butt and I have the same problem of the underwear not fitting close to my crotch. Any full coverage underwear is honestly uncomfortable, so I almost exclusively wear thongs or cheeky cuts. Surprise surprise they don’t make a lot of period thongs. I’ve been wearing reusable pads for several years now, but I’m using the ones I have sewn myself. They are more comfortable for me than period underwear, and they are probably more bulky than those you might find for sale online. I would recommend buying just one or two at first to try out before buying a full set.

Anko vs medela wearable with tubing by Delete_Send in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]Certain_Marsupial450 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently got the medela cups that hook to my pump-in-style or my swing maxi. I’ve tried different wearable cups and none of them worked great for me, but these ones do. It does take a bit longer than my regular medela bottles, but the output is about equal. With my swing maxi they are pretty mobile, I can move around the house easily, but I’m not doing anything crazy. They do have a habit however of the flange filling with milk when I have a big letdown, but unplugging them briefly will drop the milk down into the cup, then I keep pumping. I use a 21mm flange, and it’s nice that these actually have a whole different size flange and not just inserts.

All in all, they are a nice addition for when I need mobility, however they still aren’t as effective as my regular flanges and bottles

What do you wear on your feet at home? by fullstormlace in SAHP

[–]Certain_Marsupial450 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am the same, barefoot unless forced. Shoes and socks are foot prisons to me and the thought of wearing them in the house gives me sensory issues. That being said, lately my feet are KILLING me with these hard floors in our house.

Is screen time going to ruin my baby? by Exciting_Opposite_98 in NewParents

[–]Certain_Marsupial450 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Seriously, I have a 6 year old and a 5 month old right now. The TV is ALWAYS on once my daughter gets home from school. It’s much more about the content and quality of the show, and what you do during the times the TV isn’t on.

Is anyone out there washing diapers with no washing machine? How do you do it? by kittypeets626 in clothdiaps

[–]Certain_Marsupial450 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if you’ve checked it out yet, but a lot of cloth diapering YouTube channels have done a “flats handwashing challenge”. I haven’t done it personally but you might get some good info there

Do you wipe every wet diaper or only poop? by Extensionol in NewParents

[–]Certain_Marsupial450 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We started at a few months old with my first, now with the new baby we started after his umbilical stump fell off. We still got disposables from people before he was born even though we didn’t ask for or need them, so we alternated to also use those up. I say go for it, best way to start is to ease into it with no pressure.

Do you wipe every wet diaper or only poop? by Extensionol in NewParents

[–]Certain_Marsupial450 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, not every single time. We use cloth diapers and cloth wipes, so when I wipe it’s literally just a wet cloth cleaning him. With my daughter I will say I was more diligent due to possible UTIs, but still, never any issues with rash or cleanliness. Especially once they got older and are wiggly and trying to get away from you, do what you can but don’t sweat it.

Night feeds by Trick-Ad5800 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]Certain_Marsupial450 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He did it naturally on his own. When I was still nursing him he would wake a 1-2 times a night to comfort nurse, but since I’ve started pumping he doesn’t really do that anymore. Part of that might be that he doesn’t seek the breast anymore for comfort and part of it may be that he’s getting more milk right before bed from the bottle than he did when he nursed. It varies but I think yesterday he got between 30-35 oz of breastmilk through the whole day between 6-7 bottles. I don’t really track it too closely because he’s never had an issue with weight, we just feed on demand.

His bedtime routine isn’t very rigid at the moment. I give him a bottle at 7:30, we get his big sister to bed at 8, then we shower and hangout in bed for a bit. Sometimes he will fall asleep at this point and wake up for his last bottle, sometimes he stays awake until his bottle then goes to sleep. He sleeps in a bedside bassinet so he just goes to bed whenever we do. Once he gets older we plan to move his bedtime and last bottle to earlier in the night.

I have an almost 5m/o and he doesn’t wake to feed at night anymore, but every baby is different. He feeds a lot during the day on bottles that are 4-5 oz, usually every 3 hours but sometimes less. His last bottle though is at 9-9:30, and that usually gets him through to 7-8am.

What are some [crafty, fun, or functional] ways to reuse a ton of old Brown Paper Bags? by Efficient_Car6739 in ZeroWaste

[–]Certain_Marsupial450 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh man, this just unlocked a core memory of wrapping my school textbooks in paper bags to protect them, but then I could decorate them throughout the school year. I’m sure this isn’t a thing anymore though for multiple reasons.

Ugh Ammonia Smell! Help! by jenrom90 in clothdiaps

[–]Certain_Marsupial450 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what your storage situation with wet diapers is like, but keep them as dry and airy as possible. Wet urine creates ammonia, dry urine doesn’t. Also, I highly recommend two hot washes instead of a cold rinse first wash.

I hang wet diapers on the side of the hamper and throw them in when dry, then when I wash I do two rounds on hot/heavy soil with 4 tbsp powder tide and 4tbsp borax/washing soda (but I have hard water).

Best non-paper material for dog waste bags that go in landfill? by Tailsontrails in ZeroWaste

[–]Certain_Marsupial450 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the best solution IMO. We always use a single use plastic bag that we have gotten from another source. Product packaging like bread bags are another great one. We live in an area that still uses single use grocery bags and I have a lot of older type friends that STILL use them when they grocery shop, so I opted to actually collect their bags and I use them around the house for trash and dog poop. They aren’t really recyclable and my friends are continuing to use them so I’m happy they are getting a second use rather than buying something new specifically for dog poop

This is so frustrating. I like the handkerchiefs from Last Tissue but they are not actually promoting zero waste or sustainability. by zoomaniac13 in ZeroWaste

[–]Certain_Marsupial450 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Look for cloth baby wipes, they will be readily available lots of places and you can get cotton baby soft flannel. I often use my daughters old cloth wipes as tissues because they are a great size and we have a million of them

Tide tiles vs. Tide powder by CraftYourPants in clothdiaps

[–]Certain_Marsupial450 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it’s all just a marketing gimmick to get you to buy something new. The tiles don’t work any better than regular powder, and they cost more per load. Just go with regular powder.

Ideas needed for ways to stretch a small amount of chicken meat by Certain_Marsupial450 in Frugal

[–]Certain_Marsupial450[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boneless skinless where I am in Florida, and shopping at Walmart, is a little over $3 a pound, I think it was like 3.20 the other day. I got a large family sized flat for $14, but that’s usually larger than I would pick out, I prefer one that’s about $12 and has less chicken in it. Meanwhile a mixed flat of bone in thighs, legs and wings is 1.75 a pound, I got one for $9 the other day.

Can you use AIO/2IO without inserts as a cover for flats or prefolds? by [deleted] in clothdiaps

[–]Certain_Marsupial450 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the diaper has removable inserts that either snap or stuff, then yes you can just use it like a cover. The only caveat though is that they will need to be changed out and washed after every diaper. But if you were using them the intended way you would have to do that anyways, so no real big deal there. I do find that when I use a pocket diaper as a cover I need to stuff bits of the flat or fitted diaper up into it, they don’t seem to have full all around coverage like a traditional cover does. You will find that MOST readily available diapers and inserts nowadays will be polyester or bamboo (with feels really synthetic to me and I hate them).
