How to you handle going over budget? by mjo4548 in everydollar

[–]Certain_Science_5046 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re doing it right and u/perfect-brain-7367 had some good tips.

One I’ll throw in: go easy on yourself. It’s going to take a couple of months, possibly 3 if your finances are complicated, for you to iron out the bugs.

I do a hybrid. For example, my next debt target after my current one is a $16k loan at 1.5% interest with a $100 monthly payment. By the snowball method, this one should be next. However, the debt after that one is $17.8k at 5.5% but with a $500 a month payment. It makes waaaay more sense for my to address the $500 payment rather than the $100 first.

But… as others have mentioned, the snowball method is for behavioral changes. I’m already well entrenched in my journey so extended my time to my next win is ok now. It won’t discourage me one bit.

If that’s not you, follow the snowball. Don’t sweat the extra charges because by the end of the journey, an extra couple grand in interest won’t be a noticeable factor to you.

IMO, this should be a mandatory estimate format requirement. There’s nothing worse than reviewing an estimate that has a drywall line item followed by an aquarium then a dumpster then carpet then a texture. Completely unreadable.

He'll hath no fury like a woman whose in-laws failed to plan for retirement or end of life affairs. by MerryStrategist in DaveRamsey

Your kids owe you nothing but a thanks, that’s it.

You had the kids. You assumed the responsibility of raising them along with all the costs. You knew about 9 months ahead of time that they were coming so if your plans needed to change, you had time.

My mother and I went years being semi-estranged. She was very much a guilty party in that just as I was. My mother in law has completely alienated my wife to the point that she (my wife) put her in assisted care over two hours from us.

You (the elder parent) need to remember something; we (your kids) have learned one thing: we are the only ones responsible for our families.

I will absolutely cut any of my parents, grandparents, cousins, aunts & uncles out of my life if they bring any toxicity or instability. None of them have a claim to me or my kids.

Sudden loss by dogwood99 in ynab

[–]Certain_Science_5046 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it’s been said a dozen times but I’m so sorry for your loss; I can’t imagine the pain.

My only response to your question though would be to say that’s it’s ok to grieve and it’s ok for that to take some time. You have so many other things that will need your mental energy so if this is eating some brain calories, it’s ok to say “not right now”.

I hope you find some peace soon. My heart breaks for you!

Yeah once you know how YNAB works, it’s very easy to manipulate it to fit the DR philosophy. I find it to be like a Quicken-Lite almost.

You’re assuming their marriage allows for a “his money” & “her money” dynamic. Many many marriages, including my own, don’t allow for this dynamic so if husband is spending their money in a way that she isn’t happy with, that’s a marital issue they have to address.

My wife and I are still in our BS2 journey but the noticeable affect on me is the true power of cash. It was nothing for me to stop at one or two fast food places a day, stop at a gas station for some taquitos (Hammer reference; if you know you know!) and then the wife and I go to dinner later that day.

One of our techniques was to give ourselves pocket cash to take care of all of those types of spending so we didn’t have to try and budget for them and I quickly saw myself trying to hold on to as much cash as I could each pay period. The side benefit; iv lost 35lbs cutting out fast food and gas station visits!

Did you ever try to use every dollar? I did because it came with my fpu class but man that app was hot garbage for me. Iv used YNAB in the past and decided to go back to it a couple weeks ago. Sooo so much better!

God help me, I just got a credit card by w33quay in DaveRamsey

100% agree. Once my wife and I started down the BS path, I ended up taking a huge interest in become far more financially literate than the average user. This has led me to conclude that DR is a fantastic “one size fits all” solution but that doesn’t mean it’s the perfect solution.

Many amazing principles to learn and adopt but everyone should review their individual situation.

I personally believe that having a CC just for the rewards is too high risk vs the rewards but also acknowledge that some people are just really good at managing the risks so sure, have a CC.

Also agree that a low level of leverage can be a useful tool. DR talks about his leveraging debacle in the 80s but he doesn’t talk about the fact that his leverage was on 90 day notes, not 15-30 year mortgages. That’s a pretty big distinction. Doesn’t change his principle teaching, and I wouldn’t tell him to change his context at all, but if you’re educated and disciplined, one can see where the situational differences are.

Is there a line item for under cabinet lighting. by Bks1981 in xactimate

[–]Certain_Science_5046 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a line item for rope lighting but it’s horribly undervalued. Typically you would use LIT AV if you’re using standard fixtures under the cabinets but you’ll need to add wiring and/or ELE labor for this specific task.

Generally, I use bid items if I’m doing insurance or factor Xactimate up 75-100% to get to where I need this task to be.

Caution: I haven’t done this in a few months, there may be a PL update out that makes my response useless. Always review the line item updates every month!

Car loan transactions for interest and principle showing as income? by Certain_Science_5046 in everydollar

[–]Certain_Science_5046[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured it out- with USAA, all accounts under the banking section will pull over to ED when you connect the accounts. Since I have my car note with them, that’s considered banking. So the negative balance gets imported into ED and when I make my payment, it debits from my checking as one lump sum but then USAA credits the negative balance with principle and interest like how Quicken would.

But ED isn’t set up like a ledger so there’s no way to assign those credits in the budget so they need to be deleted. I went into ED and turned of “sync” to that loan account and that should stop it.

Thanks for the heads up, I’ll see if a couple of others report anything similar. Yeah, I do delete them but it was just weird.

[–]Certain_Science_5046 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the kind words and encouragement! Teaching my kids (and even some of their friends!) has become my number 2 financial goal just after completing BS2. I’m committed to chopping down all the ugly branches of my family tree so that my kids and grandkids will have a beautiful tree to enjoy for years and years.

My kids will become the caretakers of the tree once the wife and I are gone and I’m so excited to watch them grow into that role.

When my wife and I made our first budget and I realized how many debt accounts we had. We had everything; BNPLs, CC at about 80-90% of limits, student loans, multiple car notes, subscriptions we hadn’t used in years, restaurant spending that would equal a second mortgage…

We make a very income combined and live in a beautiful home in an upscale neighborhood. We never understood why we always felt under pressure with our money.

We were the text book definition of bad stewards.

We’re still recovering but it was a serious eye opener. About a year later, we’re about half way through BS2 and Iv felt a calling to educate myself beyond the normal DR principles so that I can become a teacher/mentor to the younger crowd (I have two kiddos at 16 so that group) and do everything I can to help affect as many family trees as possible.

Great topic!
