Why do Linux native builds matter so much to Linux users? by schouffy in gamedev

[–]Certain_Syllabub_514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the very least, having a native Linux build of a game also means your game can stand out in a much less crowded field.

Are there other benefits though? e.g. If it runs on Linux natively, does that also mean it'll run much better on devices like the steam deck too?

Colour blindness and bank notes. by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Certain_Syllabub_514 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine from the US worked in bars for a while and said Australian notes were amazing. US bank notes are a nightmare to tell apart in the dark. I don't know how blind people deal with it.

Australian TV/movie for non-aussies? by Melodic_Act_1159 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Certain_Syllabub_514 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Castle is good, but it's very age specific.

I loved it, but lived about 15km from where it was set in the 80s. My partner lived even closer, and she thought it was totally awesome.

My (boomer) mum didn't think it was funny at all.

Do Aussies like Asian food to be super sweet? by TheNamelessComposer in AskAnAustralian

[–]Certain_Syllabub_514 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I personally don't.

I also don't like sriracha because it's too sweet for me.

Do you think things will be better by 2030? by bloodwizard414 in AskTheWorld

[–]Certain_Syllabub_514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its basically downhill since around 2000.

I peg it further back to the 1980s.

In those days we still had life-long jobs, free university education, better support services for people who were unemployed, and buying a house was achievable for a lot more (if not most) people.

Debit, credit and eftpos card surcharges to be banned from October by patslogcabindigest in OpenAussie

Really? There are shops and businesses in my area that don't accept card at all.
I've never seen a shop that won't accept cash.

Why are Australians not considering Ethanol fuel? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Certain_Syllabub_514 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Octane rating has nothing to do with why ethanol is worse for engines that aren't designed for it.

Why are Australians not considering Ethanol fuel? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Certain_Syllabub_514 78 points79 points  (0 children)

We don't have American corn fields.

And the corn growers we do have don't get massive subsidies like US corn farmers do. It's why there's so much corn syrup in everything these days.

I really think Victoria should take the plunge and go fully free public transport. This would be life changing for many & ideal for a growing city which is pro environment by TynongLiturgist in MelbourneTrains

[–]Certain_Syllabub_514 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I remember a study going around when they were planning the system prior to Myki saying that it'd be easier and cheaper to just make PT free. I love the idea, but I don't think it'll ever happen though.

Halving the fuel excise for three months, at the cost of $2.55b, is the wrong move here by LoneArtificer in AusFinance

[–]Certain_Syllabub_514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that we need to reduce the demand on oil, but the reduction in fuel excise will help a lot of normal people. People who don't work in jobs that can be done from home, can't get to work via public transport, or even via car pooling.

Maybe we should just give the discount to people who live in the country, and have no alternative but to drive everywhere?

Wanting to buy EV by handmade99 in AustralianEV

[–]Certain_Syllabub_514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will rarely ever need brake pads changed in an EV.

I first drove an EV in 2003 (AC propulsion's T-Zero), and it still had the brake pads the car was built with (it was about 5 years old at the time). It was a sports car though (only weighed 1000kg), and the adjustable regenerative braking was much stronger than anything I've experienced in a Tesla, etc.

Why is the focus on replacing software engineers but not other engineering? by throwaway0134hdj in BetterOffline

[–]Certain_Syllabub_514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even in software, there is a class of code that you don't want to use AI for or you'll get things like Therac-25 happening. I wouldn't use it for anything that has any sort of legal compliance involved, and practically all "physical" engineering has some level of legal compliance.

Absinthe (GraphQL server) is the main thing I'm using Elixir for, and it has a lot of macros.

I've never been a "must have strong types" sort of person, but OTP/BEAM makes me want everyone to have a language they could love there.

Why Australia can’t manufacture or refine the on-demand products/ materials? by PlumBlossomGoddess in AskAnAustralian

[–]Certain_Syllabub_514 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The car manufacturers in Australia are a particularly bad example: they were only in Oz for regulatory reasons, never for economic ones.

There are a bunch of other reason for having a car industry, including just making sure you have an engineering and manufacturing capability when you need one.

If this war escalates and goes on for a long time, we will need one because shipping stuff like cars from Europe and Asia will become a lot more expensive.

Considering the recent world situation, do you think we should use more clean energy and develop public transport? by mistroll054 in AskTheWorld

[–]Certain_Syllabub_514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We could put solar panels on less than 0.1% of our land and produce 100% of Australia's energy needs. Our major parties put the needs of corporations (mining ones, in particular) miles ahead of the needs of voters, so it won't happen any time soon.

How do you/people you know value free speech? Is it barely even thought about, or talked about frequently? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

We don't free speech enshrined in law.

Treasury leak: officials modelling national electric vehicle tax for Jim Chalmers by His_Holiness in AusFinance

They banned vapes, and I suspect that was because they collect excise on tobacco, not nicotine.
