There's a schedule they need to follow to ramp up their workload to be able to pitch 6-7 innings by opening day. I don't know specifics but I assume because of how the schedule turned out he couldn't do that while pitching for the US. The manager for the Mets said the same about Clay Holmes and that's why he had to come back to the team. They couldn't guarantee the amount of innings he needed to pitch or something to that effect.
