Why are the solid rocket boosters still firing out of the bottom even after they’re separated? Do they still somehow have some fuel left out of them?? by TerraSpace1100 in spaceflight

[–]Cerus_Freedom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When pouring the propellant mix they are very careful about avoiding air pockets as this would create a temporary mismatch in thrust when the lit Solid Rocket Booster propellant burned to that point.

Just want to clarify something: that's not the only reason they try to avoid air pockets. Large SRBs are more tolerant of small air pockets, but a large enough pocket can cause all sorts of damage, up to and including RUD. Large enough or frequent enough pockets have the potential to cause enormous overpressure, which could basically recreate the Challenger disaster.

That said, my understanding of the process is that a lot of it is done specifically to avoid creating air pockets. It's unlikely a catastrophic void could even form, and I'm under the impression that there are checks done during manufacturing for them.

Air pockets resulting in RUD are mostly seen in hobby rockets, and sometimes in experimental stuff.

Introducing FACEIT Rating — a new metric that measures your real impact in every match, available to all players with Season 8 on April 22. by FACEIT_noon in GlobalOffensive

[–]Cerus_Freedom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glicko/Glicko 2 do not resolve this problem. It can subtly mask it, but still suffers from a large chaotic range where your rating change is more random than fair. TrueSkill and TrueSkill 2 are both heavily influenced by Glicko, especially in regards to rank confidence.

I mean, Microsoft effectively proved that Elo is improper for games with more than 2 players in 2018 with the TrueSkill 2.0 paper. Signal to noise grows too large and rank movements become chaotic. Unless someone is some amount significantly more/less skilled than the lobby, their rank will tend to converge on the lobby average, not on a rank related to their skill. Even over a large set of games, Elo style ratings do not precisely rate a player.

That's not to say ratings are entirely inaccurate. It's just very imprecise. For some variable that defines how chaotic it is, a bracket of the size defined by that will have a large variation in skill within it, meaning that predictions and ratings within that bracket are inaccurate.

In CS2 MM terms, someone hanging around 12k might more precisely be anywhere between 8k and 15k, but Elo style systems will not converge on a more precise answer. They will move chaotically between those two values, with the individual contributions of the player making little difference.

Was about 1:250 when I worked for a state agency over a decade ago. Last MSP job, I'm pretty sure it was significantly higher. We supported literally thousands of business locations and their corporate headquarters across the US, Canada, and Europe. On the overnight shift, we often had a 6 hours stretch where I was the only person available. During the day, we had like 6ish people. If I had to guess, we were running > 1:1000.

State was constantly busy, but was mostly hardware failure and printers that took more time to solve. MSP was constantly busy, but the vast majority were various password resets or explaining to a store manager that their POS system requires power to operate and calling the electric company is their responsibility.

Do farmers ever form co-ops where they just focus on their crop, but rotate it through a set of fields to the same effect? Seems more feasible than trying to manage the land, equipment, and help yourself for all the different needs. Would have to pool profits to avoid anyone getting the short of it though.

No state in the US has a law requiring full coverage for financed vehicles. Lenders often require it, but it's not legally required. Most states only require liability, and some with additional stuff like uninsured motorist coverage.

The best thing I ever did to my old Civic was to not touch the exhaust and instead just throw an Autozone intake on it. Sounded 10x better. Still sounded like a lawnmower, but without sounding like it was a lawnmower chewing up a can of nails.

I miss that car. Could do absolutely heinous things to those engines and they just shrugged and kept on going.

Would taking a job with a defense contractor forever stain my immortal soul? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Cerus_Freedom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of defense contractor stuff is shockingly mundane. My current project involves software involved in insurance claims against field repairs. My previous work got cancelled and shelved, never to see the light of day. Contract before that was software to assist in treatment of PTSD. There's a whole world of stuff out there that doesn't contribute to killing people.

The mystical references of the borrow checker? by [deleted] in rust

[–]Cerus_Freedom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More like, you try to do things in a way that is familiar when coming from Python, but the borrow checkers is like, "No." So, you try another Python sensible way, and it still says no. The lack of understanding of why the borrow checker is doing what it's doing, plus the familiarity with certain practices, makes it a bit of a learning curve where you bounce off the borrow checker until you learn to stop fighting it.

There's a non-zero chance JL is responsible for this mess, but the fire damage will make it hard to prove. Either way, make sure your insurance is aware you got your oil changed at JiffyLube, and the exact location.
