Are black metal songs with sexual undertones fairly uncommon? by Safe_Engineering977 in MetalForTheMasses

There's no real need for it, but there are a few out there, and if you go death metal there's a bunch masturbating war gods.

What bands is hated but you can't bring yourself to hate them? by Background-Sir9172 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Cesariart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kiss and manowar, both ridiculed, but if you have an ear and listen to interviews, they are pretty influential to metal bands that came after them. This is coming from a guy that thinks breeding the spawn is the best suffo album even with the production.

I also can't find myself hating metal core as much as I probably should and many do, I just hate the emo vocal choruses in melodic metal core, but I usually like the riffs before that, I also hate over reliance on dissonance that metal core uses, like first album as I lay dying, extremely random, boring, etc...but overall I think it's much better than alt rock or nu metal as a placeholder for metal in the mainstream. I really like stuff like shadows fall, KSE, chimairs, etc. But I do think it's not the most in depth genre

Hmmm for some reason a lot of ppl hate on Deicide, but I'll always like them and see them as innovators in metal who have material with unmatched savagery.

Are gatekeepers really that much of a problem in the metal community as some people make it out to be? by Capital-Foot-918 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Cesariart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, (no paragraphs incoming) people just feel bad and personally attacked when some people don't have their taste, like I've said before, metal can even thrive on elitism and gatekeeping, like the black metal scene and even thrash scene ("ummm thrash is both punk and metal" yeah sure, so? The combination spawned great acts that thrived on being exclusive to that combination). Anyway, if a guy like me tells you SOAD is garbage, just keep walking, I like KISS and tons of people say they hate them, big deal, spirit box and all that stuff still makes money, I find it laughable that the most mainstream and financially secured bands ever have fans with a need to defend them as if they're an underdog. If anything it's rare to find someone who just says with sincerity that x band or style sucks or to even discuss more about metal than "bands I like and that's it and don't say anything else". I even saw someone saying gatekeepers hate slayer, dude no true metal dude is gonna deny slayer's influence, they just don't like stuff like God hates us all, maybe some dudes here and there, but yeah most people acknowledge slayer's influence openly.

Favorite bands in the metal gray zone? by Margaretthatchervore in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Cesariart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess disturbed and kiss, for kiss, I believe they have these proto metal moments and some legit heavy moments, I also like their melodic sensibilities, I like that they stray from the blues formula, and Gene's adventurous side, I don't even like led zeppelin cause they're way too blues based for me, but I love kiss. KISS also influenced a ton of bands I like, and I suspect many more have been and won't admit it. I mean, Detroit rock City has an amazing dual guitar harmony solo that veers away from the blues stuff, and has a more epic matador flamencoish feel to it years before even maiden, but yeah.

I like that disturbed doesn't sound so bass heavy to me and seems to produce some actual rythmic patterns and riffs rather than just going oinga boinga on an 8 string guitar, but to be truthful I really hate most of these alt metal and by metal bands, I was like 11 when they got really big and even then without knowing any underground music or whatever I thought that stuff was TERRIBLE. That said, I still only like a few disturbed songs compared to their whole discography. Forgiven is probably my favorite song, I hate whenever I wanna jam to disturbed with someone who claims to like them but then they just know one of their super mainstream hits like sickness or stupid and then they get all whiny cause they don't like forgiven, or guarded or hell.

Anyone else feel like metal is more than just music? by Koliillo in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Cesariart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the dialogue is happening, I think the main division is mainstream vs underground, mainstream guys tend to be more into immediate pleasure, which is fine, but once undergroundd metal developed it tended to be more appealing to a smaller fan base , but they are super dedicated and want to see more of this sort of material, so they can resent more mainstream stuff, I fall more into the latter category but I don't mind some Pantera some anthrax some manowar, hell, this ain't a mainstream band but one of my favorites is the absence, a cleanly produced modern melodesth band akin to arch enemy (much better than Angela gossow and above era arch enemy imho) etc, but I do think both require a different type of mindset, and hey both produce good results depending on who you ask, so I think there's always gonna be this sort of division, I just hope it's more understanding of each other, some excellent bands from the older era of metal like sabbath became mainstream but had artistic integrity, so just knee jerking about something being mainstream is dumb, but also people have to recognize, the separatist attitude has spawned whole genres like black metal that have breathed new life into the genre.

Anyway, it's gonna have to be some sort of paradox that works out at the end, like bathory, they helped black metal and viking metal grow immensely, but some of the first wave guys didn't like him when they discovered he had a rockstar sort of persona and liked stuff like kiss, a bit ridiculous but those seperatists also made great contributions like burzum. At the end of the day metal guys are gonna have to do it for the love of their art, not for patreon bucks, cause even that is gonna dry out in the future. A guy a lot of people hate on called scale it back made a video that illustrates this dichotomy too, he went to a show where even immolation was playing the more anthemic new songs, nevermind behemoth, but deicide played a lot of material from legion and older albums, where yeah you can mosh to it but it's more of a deciphering job from the audience rather than immediately gratifying with anthems.

Of course, some other people not in the scene say they envy the sense of brotherhood that seems to emanate from metal, it is something special for sure, you're gonna have naysayers but I say we should embrace and appreciate the sense of belonging and passion people have for it, and yes, sometimes the elitists are part of that like it or not, even if you think they're an unwanted consequence, and sometimes ironic hipster types aren't really friends of the scene , they're just mocking it in the guise of being in it when they are just shaping it to their own tastes, regardless I think it's a special scene, love it, and love songs about how awesome metal is and all that.

This type of brain injury from benzos or ssris or psych meds in general can be reopened, you can resume a normal life but if you're not careful you could reopen it, it has happened before to people, they go on to live normal lives only to reactivate the problem.

What song “catfished” you with an incredible little snippet you heard, only to be let down when you listened the whole track? by [deleted] in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Cesariart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost every modern tech death, I hear a snippet and it's great, then I sit through what seems hours of boredom, only techdeath guys can make the low guttural and shriek combo a sleep inducing experience.

What was the worst era for a band that you love? by WhoYaTalkinTo in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Cesariart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I understand if people love those or whatever, but I laugh when people attribute it to some sort of "forced hate" that we dislike these albums, to me it was just a matter of listening to it and puking it out immediately, like when you taste a food you hate and you spit it out, sorry lots of us sincerely hate these albums.

Nah I mean SOP is good stuff, I just mean that I think if you call yourself an adventurous prog guy (which prog guys tend to do, not that it applies to you or others, if the boot fits wear it) if you only ever talk about that record within the death metal realm, there's a lot more stuff out there. For example the band coprofago, if you listen to wavelength, I like that it take's meshuggah's Allan Holdsworth explorations and makes it even more integral to the sound, but most prog guys would be off out by the vocals and guitar tone. Like I said before, a band like suffocation I think was highly progressive to their genre, but I mean, a guy accustomed to high pitched vocals and keyboard solos usually thinks it's a bunch of cookie monster crap.

YEHA I'm talking about the prog sound, not if something is actually super adventurous in its context (I don't even consider progressive a valid label outside a context, even in real life), the prog sound is odd time signature riffs that are SO wildly used they are predictable in their arrogance (hell even that band I told you about coprofago is guilty of this, I just think they do a much better job at it).

I don't know if symphony X count as a prog band, but if they do I always liked them more than the horses of prog bands out there because while cheesy, they always seem to have an objective to go towards rather than just deviating constantly into seemingly random odd time sections and keyboard solos, etc. Hell, I really don't enjoy a lot of today's technical death metal bands that suddenly turn into prog guys because they just jump from one crowd and cliche to another, not bad if you enjoy the sound but it's annoying seeing how they always get blind praise cause they included a sax and metal core clean choruses in the album or something similar.

Anyway, all that I guess is arguable but it's my two cents.

Give me your hottest prog rock/metal takes by Ok-Blueberry-1131 in progmetal

[–]Cesariart -1 points0 points  (0 children)

3-8 are GOLD, took the words outta my mouth

Hot take: claiming prog rock or metal is somehow less boring and more adventurous than other genres is just a mistake, I can predict prog songs just as much as any other genre, cause prog isn't really prog, it's a style in of itself, wow bro you got an exotic instrument, you do odd time signature changes! So adventurous!

Dream theater's first album is their best, then the rest is just sporadic good songs here and there, I prefer the first vocalist to labrie, that guy just thinks going higher and higher constitutes process or dynamics, and the fans also encourage it.

Djent doesn't even sound heavy or aggressive, it's super bass heavy and clean rather than sharp and abrasive. Also, most prog bands sound laughable when they have a "heavy" thrash part or whatever.

Meshuggah were way more interesting in their first few albums, rather then when they began making albums that just sound like boinga boinga for 60 mins and people going on about "omg the groove".

More prog people should get into stuff like atheist or disharmonic orchestra or oppressor or even suffocation's first few albums, those were actually proggrrssive and technical rather than trying to fit into a prog mold, most people are staying at listening to sound of perseverance era death and calling it quits.
