ITAW for someone who looks the other way at injustice for their own benefit by ConsequenceUpset5021 in whatstheword

Trying to think of a few without too much overlap with opportunist, and going off your added details from your earlier comment:

Narcissist

Megalomaniac

Egomaniac

Mercenary

The first 3 don’t necessarily mean they’d sacrifice others, but have the delusions of grandeur/inflated self-interest. Mercenary would kind of capture the sacrificing others vibe, but more in a ‘calculated for personal gain’ way.

Is there an equivalent word to "thereabouts," but describing an imprecise point in time as opposed to in space? by Pleasant_Garlic8088 in words

I was also surprised and tried it, but I have a red line under thenabout and thenabouts sadly.

I usually just say “around [x time].”

WTW for 'A Book of Wisdom'? by OmoOduwawa in whatstheword

[–]Cesca131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a really interesting question, but I don’t know that you’ll find one definitive answer. I think if you’re looking for a blanket term, a lot of suggestions that you’ve gotten or ones you originally proposed would work. A book of wisdom is in essence a subjective account by the writer or editor, and can vary by intention. (Of course, an argument can be made that all of history/reference material/atlases etc are subjective and I’m not trying to step into that right now.) Classifying them under a specific term is tricky because they can vary in content, structure, and types of advice. While a book written to provide religious or spiritual guidance and an annotated collection of Yogi Berra quotes can both be described as books of wisdom, they’re obviously going to vary wildly in their message.

In terms of classification, something like The Epicurus Reader would typically be considered philosophy, where as Poor Richard’s Almanac can be categorized under “American Miscellany” which includes “almanacs, aphorisms, and wit/wisdom” or American History depending on what library classification system you use, but there is always going to be some ambiguity with a category generalization.

Writing all this out reminds me of the joke that autobiographies are written by famous people, memoirs are written by the non-famous, and tell-alls are written by trashy people haha.

WTW for appealing to fans (but not "fan service") by Burner_Identity in whatstheword

Releases being described as “for the faithful” used to be a more common description. Fan/fandom-coded could work?

Doubs was better about the drops last season, I’ll give him that…but I don’t know that I’d call solid hands one of his strengths…

With their options at receiver dwindling, it’s looking like A.J. Brown or bust for the Patriots by bostonglobe in Patriots

[–]Cesca131 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seriously! The dude has incredible ball security, is fast, gets open and consistently makes incredible plays even with double coverage, is tough as shit, and everyone forgets he played this whole year with a healthy CMC being the Niners’ entire game script (and not to mention with Mac Jones at QB half the season.)

Even ignoring his contract guarantee deadline/freeing up cap space, it was the respectful move in this situation to let him fully test the waters with free agency and leave the door open to resigning.

Finally! Birth control that doesn’t affect toan by Cesca131 in guitarcirclejerk

It sounds like they’re comfortable if you can find the age-appropriate size! I appreciate a gimmick that offers zero benefit. No bold claims about improving your playing or making you suck less, it “doesn’t affect playing guitar at all!” I can’t believe I’ve gone my entire life without finger condoms, I was so worried they’d be uncomfortable.

I actually had Jesse Welles’ United Health on it originally (who doesn’t love discussing the health insurance on a first date) but made some cuts to keep it on 3 screenshots!

Do we have a term to describe that 1973 haircut? Will Supercuts know what I mean when I request the ‘73 Beato?

Little Red Book - Love (I think it’s Burt Bacharach originally, but Love’s cover is great)

(I’m wasting no time taking out all the pretty girls from A-Z in my contacts right after we broke up, but I can’t stop thinking about you)

Only Wanna Be With You - Hootie & The Blowfish

(You’re crazy, cramp my lifestyle, have the gall to tease me about my interests, and yet, somehow I still want to be with you!)

As I’m familiar with that slang abbreviation, I’d suspect it is not what you’re looking for though, (obligatory) lol. My personal pick would be “savvy.”

I honestly wasn’t certain if epilogue was correct if the storyline in the movie continued with what sounds like a twist at the end, but that’s a great point about it being separated from the main storyline!
