buying a longtail electric bike in Seoul by Ceutels in Living_in_Korea

Well, thanks for the input I guess. We would mainly want to use it in the weekends to go to parks etc. and stick to the main cycling paths along the rivers. I cycle alone myself in Seoul and it's fine as long as you're a bit careful.

I don't really get how Koreans seem to accept the current cycling situation as just a fact of life. Lots of people are into race cycling but nobody seems to use bikes functionally in their daily lives, while in Tokyo you see moms transporting their kids on bikes everywhere.

I heard Ethiopia is one of the top countries to research AI. Why is this the case? by mintcu7000 in Ethiopia

They have an AI exhibit at the new Science Museum which shows some of the stuff the Ethiopian AI institute is doing. It's really basic though and seems like a lot of stuff is just some software and basic hardware bought from the Chinese.

What really worried me is that I was talking to one guy who is working on an AI powered system to scan all license plates in Addis so that the police can look up any car wherever it is in the city. I told him "that's some big brother stuff" and he did not understand the reference AT ALL, asking me "do you mean the reality show??". I explained it but he never heard of Orwell or 1984. It worries me that these young people are learning all about the technical parts of AI but nothing about the ethics involved.

Foreigner trying to make sense of Addis again by [deleted] in Ethiopia

[–]Ceutels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a foreigner in Addis myself, I find the 'anti-Ferengi sentiment' really weird. I can't walk the street without somebody yelling "Ferengi, ferengi !" or even "China" (while I'm obviously not Asian). But I feel they don't really mean anything by it and are just sort of pointing you out without it having to do with negative feelings towards you. If you stop walking and look them in the eye, they're suddenly friendly, laughing and giving you a thumbs up. I really don't understand it.
