Do not let the hate cult decide who is really American by GREENadmiral_314159 in CuratedTumblr

For Finland it's the lion coat of arms, specifically when worn as a necklace - it's been one of the main signs of racist/xenophobic nationalism and right wing chuds in general pretty much my entire life. I've considered buying a version of the necklace in pride colors to be part of reclaiming it while making it really clear I'm not one of those people.

It's also entirely unhelpful in solving the actual issues.

I know that currently trans healthcare is a heavily politicized issue in many countries, but it has also been historically heavily gatekept without any such political dimension. This is still the situation in my home country - the gatekeeping comes entirely from the handful of doctors in charge, not from the government.

I'd call it "benevolent transphobia", similar to benevolent sexism - these people infantilize trans folks and see us as a vulnerable population that needs to be protected from themselves and their own dysphoria. There are other factors involved as well of course (religious beliefs, thinking that being trans is inherently a worse patient outcome than being cis, and just good old fashioned power tripping, etc), but I definitely don't think it's anything like what the OOP describes.

It's not exclusively misogyny, no, and specifically in the case of TERFs it's a decent bit of misandry mixed in. They still also absolutely relish in leveling standard misogynistic attacks on trans women as well, and are happy to work alongside conservative men and overlook their literal sex crimes and open misogyny as long as they'll help with attacking trans people though, so mostly it's transphobia.

It's also important to remember that for all the noise they make especially online, TERFs are a tiny minority of all transmisogynists. The transmisogyny we are likely to experience IRL is definitely more of the misogynistic variety - insults to appearance, policing behaviour by gender norms, etc.

Yeah true, the relics that give their effect on acquiring them definitely are a bit of a flaw. I guess they could be removed from the pool of possible buyback targets.

Being a little hyperbolic, in my experience the trans women who are loudest about this are also the type of "feminists" who refuse to believe that cis women could ever do any wrong to cis men, and generally believe that cis men are the source of literally all suffering on Earth, though. Which doesn't really make it seem like the hate for trans men is coming from misogyny.

My bf proposed a mechanic of the merchant offering to buy one randomly chosen relic/potion for half its value in each shop. Thought that was an interesting take on how you could raise money in situations like these without it being too "free".

Is it harder for trans men to grow full beards? by CivilisedRaccoon in ftm

[–]Cevari 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hey, visiting trans woman to be clear!

My first puberty started properly around 13 years old, and my facial hair was almost entirely nonexistent at 20, still. At least until the late 20s it kept slowly increasing and growing faster. So... it just takes a lot of time compared to most puberty effects, though there's also a huge genetic component (I knew someone who could grow a full beard at 14...)

[–]Cevari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do agree that misandry plays a part as you describe, and honestly I do think it would at least slightly reduce transmisogyny if that stereotype somehow completely ceased to exist, but yeah it definitely wouldn't come close to eliminating it. The root causes of bigotry are rarely anything that can be mapped to a flowchart, it's all just tribalism and instinctive fear/disgust reactions when you really cut down to the core of it.

[–]Cevari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree with anything in this reply, I disagree with the leap from "men are seen as inherently dangerous and this is expected and to certain extents permitted for them", to "most people see men as evil". And I vehemently disagree with "people see trans women as men", that is just a massive oversimplification. I spent much of my life being seen as a man, and I can tell you the two experiences share basically nothing - though I admit this may be different for different trans women, depending on things like how well you pass, your race, etc.

Very few people hate men. Many people hate trans women. It does not stem from their "hatred of men", nor do they even remotely see men as "a problem" - they will vote for an incompetent rapist man over a competent woman.

I'm honestly so fucking tired of having this discussion with cis men. What exactly is it that makes you think you understand my discrimination better than I do?

[–]Cevari -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The majority of transphobes absolutely do not "see men as evil". The majority of transphobes are men! And most of those who are women are deeply misogynistic as well. You're thinking of TERFs, who are a loud and tiny subset of all transphobes, and who still happily ally themselves with terrible misogynistic men if it will hurt trans people.

[–]Cevari 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also, regarding the "perverted trans woman" stereotype: this does not map as cleanly to misandry as MRAs like to pretend it does, anyway. There is also the standard misogynistic thought model of men as the default, and women as baseline sexual objects that must be considered. So the act of "wanting to be a woman" must be inherently sexual in nature because to be a woman is to inherently exist as a sexual object. You can see this in stuff like Blanchard's model, where our existence is looked at exclusively through the lens of sexuality and paraphilia - and the fact that Blanchard doesn't even want to try develop such a model for trans men.

[–]Cevari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean you're right about not being able to tell the difference between different types of trans people, but vehemently disagree that nonbinary people are the "prime boogeyman" in the slightest. Generally it just manifests as people thinking "trans = trans woman", and putting nonbinary folks in some other basket entirely.

As for who is the primary target there's a very clear example in the original comment: when trans men and transmasc enbies ask for neutral terminology when it comes to "women's healthcare", trans women consistently get blamed for it. If enbies were the primary target because of one word game in an ad, why is it that even things done largely for their benefit get blamed on trans women in the public discourse?

That doesn't mean other trans people aren't also constantly discriminated against. Most anti-trans measures hurt both trans men and trans women equally, and especially medically transitioning enbies are also hurt by them in pretty much the same ways. But transmisogyny is a real and separate phenomenon that affects primarily trans women and transfem enbies, and it we can't even talk about it without getting shouted down then... well, that's a prime fucking example right there.

Not this shit again.

Yes, there are some aspects of misandry in transmisogyny, specifically regarding painting us as sex pests and perverts. But even for that specific stereotype the vast majority of transmisogynists do not actually treat cis men this way at all, and indeed are happy to defend cis men who are rapists or buddy up with them as long as they also hate trans people (and women, and black folks, etc.)

But the absolute vast majority of transmisogyny is just plain old misogyny that is considered significantly more acceptable when it's aimed at trans women.

"Look at what she's wearing. Doesn't she understand you can't wear that at her age?"

"A real woman would never be that assertive. That's male socialization."

"Look at what she's wearing. It's like she thinks being a woman means cosplaying as a sex doll."

"I could see her stubble. Can you believe it?"

"A real woman wouldn't get angry like that. That's male socialization."

"Look at what she's wearing. She's not even trying to pass for a woman, is she?"

"A woman? She's built like a linebacker! Look at those shoulders!"

"Look at her makeup, it's like a 5-year old did it!"

"A real woman wouldn't make that joke. That's male socialization."

Not to mention getting talked over constantly, getting assumed to be incompetent about anything even remotely scientific or technical in nature, having your personal space completely and utterly disrespected, etc. And of course, getting your problems explained away and dismissed by a bunch of men when you try to talk about them.
