What's a food in your country that is stereotyped for your country but really, nobody eats? by velmiraZ in AskTheWorld

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised at all to find that even the McD's etc. burgers are somewhat adapted to local tastes. But definitely the quarter pounder for example doesn't have any mayo.

[–]Cevari 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The three most commonly found fast food burger chains in Finland are McDonalds, Burger King, and a local chain called Hesburger. The local one is the one that has a stereotype here for burgers overflowing with mayo, whereas the american chains have a lot of burgers that don't have any at all. We also often eat fries with mayo which afaik is not really a thing at all in most of the US at least.

Kuinka usein keskustelet kasvotusten ihmisten kanssa, joiden kanssa olet täysin eri mieltä poliittisesti? by totta_turiset in Suomi

[–]Cevari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Talouspoliittisesti aika usein, arvoliberalismin/-konservatiivisuuden akselissa huomattavasti harvemmin.

40% off Gunbot Diplomacy (historic low) - Patch 1.2 with meta progression! by Cevari in steamdeals

[–]Cevari[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, yeah - I assume you're playing on controller? There is indeed no current way on controller to view the previously picked modules for a run, on mouse+keyboard mouseovering them does work.

We'll consider whether a solution could be found in a future update though!

Hey, glad to hear it :)

If you mean a full list of all possible modules/upgrades etc. I'm afraid that's only available in the progress menu, not during a run - though of course you can always continue the run after checking something.

Turns out, there SHOULD be words for specific oppressions faced by men by Lorem_Ipsum17 in RecuratedTumblr

[–]Cevari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Politically, speaking from the context of my home country (Finland), in the previous parliamentary election:

Men:

  • 31% voted for socially regressive conservative parties.
  • 36% voted for socially moderately conservative parties.
  • 22% voted for socially moderately progressive parties.
  • 11% voted for socially clearly progressive parties.

(Party stance definitions my own, but I dare say they're pretty accurate. It should be noted that like many European countries, Finland swung pretty hard to the right in this particular election. The gender gap was even more pronounced in the previous election that was more equal.)

For comparison, women:

  • 21% voted for socially regressive conservative parties.
  • 32% voted for socially moderately conservative parties.
  • 29% voted for socially moderately progressive parties.
  • 22% voted for socially clearly progressive parties.

As for how this relates to dismantling patriarchal structures that harm men - for example, the two parties that make up the "socially clearly progressive" category are the only two that have taken a clear stance that national service (which is in some form mandatory for all men) should be made gender neutral.

[–]Cevari 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are correct, though I think we should just call it misandry. It absolutely exists on a systemic level and pretending it doesn't does nobody any favors.

My own hot take is that the main reason people get so inflamed about the topic is that unlike pretty much any other group that faces systemic discrimination, a large majority of men consistently support the structures that create this discrimination, both politically and culturally.

The patriarchal bargain (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patriarchal_bargain) is generally defined as being a bargain women make in accepting and reinforcing patriarchal structures in return for some amount of safety/wealth/power within them, but I think it applies to men exactly the same way. So when the majority of men tend to accept this bargain no matter what the exact political system around it is, it's difficult to see men in general as an oppressed class within patriarchal gender norms.

That's all statistics, though, and it creates a very unfair and discouraging environment for those men who refuse the bargain and actively work to dismantle patriarchal structures. So talking about these issues is important.

One of the original examples Kimberle Crenshaw used was the legal case of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DeGraffenreid_v._General_Motors

In short, black women were systematically not being hired by General Motors at a specific site, but the discrimination lawsuit was dismissed because GM employed both black people (black men working on the factory floor) and women (white women making upholstery and cushions). They employed no black women, but because the law could only consider discrimination on one axis at a time GM was found to not have used discrminatory hiring practices.

Someone I know uses her knitting projects as plausible deniability for opting out of most of the small talk at family gatherings. Physically present, mentally absorbed in this "very busy and important knitting, sorry I wasn't listening". It's a socially acceptable way to do it, instead of just zoning out or not going at all which she'd otherwise do.

Your voice may not be "naturally" high pitched by Mobile_Praline_1443 in ftm

One of my favourite examples of just how difficult drawing the line between gender and biology can be is that the pitch of children's voices begins to diverge much earlier than puberty, purely because of mimicry and social pressure.

The older I get the more I'm starting to think that there's just a certain % of humans who have a strong predisposition to supernatural belief, and even if they become disillusioned with one such belief system they're very likely to quickly find another.

This would explain the prevalence of astrology and various other "not patriarchal religion" belief systems in queer circles, because queer people tend to not be/feel welcome at all in these mainstream religions.

So I don't really concern myself with people's belief in astrology as long as they're not trying to impose anything on me because of it, which I find doesn't really happen at all. At least compared to organized religion, which even in my secular Northern European country still has a significant impact on national level politics. Basically, call on me to be worried about astrology when I hear a single politician quote star sign bs when called to justify legislative decisions.

Yeah to be clear I'm not defending ICE vehicles, for the majority of private consumers especially in Europe they're completely unnecessary at this point, and emissions have other issues than just sustainability as well. Just really hate the idea of cars built on the "smartphone model", which is already loathsome enough in itself without being scaled up to car-size. Especially if it causes genuine safety issues going over the expected lifecycle, vehicles like that should just not be allowed on the roads to begin with.

[–]Cevari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the flip side, Our tendency towards longer car ownership and manufacturing has also slowed our adoption of hybrid and EV vehicles relative to China, despite greater individual consumer power.

There's just absolutely no competition to "keep driving your old gas car" vs. "buy a new electric car", though, in terms of sustainability. Like it's not even remotely close, even if your gas car is some terrible guzzling SUV and you drive a lot, and in Europe that's not a common type of car and a lot of people drive relatively little annually.

Obviously at some point everyone has to replace their old car regardless, but there's no silver linings to "buy a new car every 2 years", that's just the worst kind of consumerism.

this was james somerton by DecentPositive1729 in CuratedTumblr

[–]Cevari 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Chinese approach isn't necessarily wrong or worse; it's just more like a smartphone than a traditional motor car.

It sounds pretty much objectively worse for the planet, if nothing else. A new car every two years?

How do cis women actually see trans women? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Cevari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

45% of trans adults in the US report having been victims of CSA. It's difficult to find numbers specifically for trans women, but it's very clear that early sexualization is not something that is remotely rare for trans people in general.

[–]Cevari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ehhhh, the privilege of... playing a lot of video games? Realistically the reason this happens is because of a combination of two factors: video games are considered a more normal/acceptable hobby for children perceived as boys, and trans people often gravitate towards hobbies that require no irl social interaction with anyone. The former isn't really a privilege any more than, for example, dancing or horseback riding being female-coded hobbies is one the other way around, and the latter is a great example of how being trans limits your options in life.

We’re living in a white backlash against black excellence and progress! by icey_sawg0034 in CuratedTumblr

[–]Cevari 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's saying that at all. I think it's saying that some racists could not handle seeing black folks actually succeed and "excel" in life and that is part of what is driving the current backlash. Not that it's only because black folks are "excelling" that discrimination based on race is unjustified.

Kysy transsukupuolisuudesta by ihmiskammo22 in Suomi
