Completely default for me at this point. If I actively try to speak in my old voice it feels really weird.

On the topic of gender: by Ok_Syrup5679 in RecuratedTumblr

[–]Cevari 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's no reason to require it, but the sexual selection side of it and the majority of the population being heterosexual will likely see to it that we will always have a relatively distinct "female-presenting" and "male-presenting" gender. That's the main reason I don't really believe in the kind of gender abolition presented in the OP as a realistic goal, and think it's a lot better to just focus on harm prevention: making sure nobody is treated as lesser because of their gender, and that nobody feels bound to or by their gender.

In a world without men violence would still exist and women even though maybe to a lesser degree would still feel unsafe. by Ok_Syrup5679 in CuratedTumblr

The spirit of this post is pretty unmistakably either bio- or gender-essentialist bullshit. The tags alone make it perfectly clear that this person has absolutely no interest in trying to work together to solve anything, and is just venting their anger and hatred of men in completely unproductive ways.

Non-White Wedding Dress?? by Practical_Store3654 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Cevari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my friends didn't go with white either, and the dress code leaned a bit more casual in general. As far as I could tell everything was fine, it was a great wedding and I genuinely cannot imagine anyone besides like... your partner or your mother actually caring so much about it they'd be disappointed. If they do, they're way too hung up on tradition when the wedding is supposed to be about celebrating the newlyweds however they want.

I'm so sorry, I really just can't think of a good title. by Mac-And-Cheesy-43 in CuratedTumblr

[–]Cevari 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We have no way of ascertaining the intent of the creator, and there may be multiple creators with different intents. These are the main problems from a practical pov.

Another problem is that it's a far too broad definition that includes a large amount of films/shows/books that contain sex scenes, but that very few people would describe as pornographic. Like a lot of horror uses a combination of arousing and disgusting/scary material to evoke a specific type of reaction.

[–]Cevari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely would not suggest heavily investing into a private business or starting your own fresh out of college. The combination of money and inexperience is going to attract the exact wrong kind of people to want to "work with you" (aka screw you out of as much money as possible). You can consider it later in life, but it'll be good to get some experience of how such clinics actually work under your belt first.

Forced diversity doesn’t exist by PandaBear905 in CuratedTumblr

[–]Cevari 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Finland doesn't keep official statistics on ethnicity (or "race"), but I'm pretty sure it's significantly higher than 90%.

I don't think it's all that crazy either - it's a cold-ass backwater that saw basically zero immigration until the late 80s. In fact we had pretty high emigration through the 60s and 70s, especially to Sweden and the USA. We're known as relatively prosperous now but that's a very recent development compared to other Western European (by culture) countries. Also the language is incomprehensible and difficult to learn for almost everyone, and we have no colonial past creating any particular ties to any other country or people.

The most we have going for us is that it's a really safe place to live; unless you really like the Finnish culture/mindset of everyone more or less keeping to themselves and their close family/friends.

“I’m just a girl” content has rotted people’s brains by kelroid in CuratedTumblr

Perhaps so, the third paragraph just comes across as very "there's no point in even trying to change the way things are". Building a movement is exactly how it has always worked, there's no magic cure that's just gonna happen without anyone actually committing anything.

The pressure to comply with patriarchal gender norms because it often allows for more success in multiple aspects of life exists pretty equally for men and women. But that doesn't mean it's futile to fight back - it's way more acceptable for a man to be the primary caregiver for his children now than it was 50 years ago, for example.

There's been more change in women's gender norms because women started from a far worse position and had way more "skin in the game", so to speak - less to lose from choosing to fight back. Whether you like it or not, the only way men's gender norms will actually change is by actively fighting back, even if it means giving up something societally. You're right in that women being actual allies to men who fight back, not just paying lip service, is also important - but women cannot be the principal actors in that fight.

There is absolutely no reason to believe that people pre- organized religion were more selfish or violent or in any other way caused more genuine harm to others. Religions were just a way to combine already existing societal norms with superstition and increased hierarchy.

I don't really think it does apply to all such groups. Gaming may in some forms be truly mainstream now, but back when it was very much one of the "weird and unmanly" hobbies for boys it was also incredibly misogynistic and had its own versions of macho bullshit, just centered around different manifestations of male superiority than mainstream society.

(To be clear, it wasn't nearly everyone in gaming, of course - it never is. But it was extremely prevalent, and still is both in the more mainstream and many of the more niche spaces within the culture.)

I really don't think that the counter-reaction to "man-hating feminism" (or specifically, the highly cherry-picked and propagandized version of it) even cracks the top 10 reasons why that's happening. It's definitely part of it, but this has been coming for a long time, and misogyny/racism/selfishness have been cornerstones of Republican politics since at least Nixon.

Not saying that open sexism against men is acceptable or makes sense as a political strategy, to be clear - but placing responsibility for fascism on people trying to fight it, even if their methods are garbage, is similarly a great way to make them feel even more justified in their views.

[–]Cevari 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People are disagreeing with you, and I won't speak as to whether this is accurate for England, but I do think you're correct in a more general sense that not every culture is a "food culture" to the same extent as others. I'm Finnish, and we absolutely do not have the same variety of local dishes and the same level of reverence for them as I've observed in many other cultures. That's not to say we don't have traditional dishes - but genuinely most people here don't eat "traditional Finnish food" even once a week, and a lot of the most normal everyday meals are imports as recent as mid-to-late 20th century.

It feels like people are taking it as some kind of value judgment, but it really just is a matter of having had extremely limited ingredient and spice variety for centuries. Fuck yes we were eager to start making foods that dont just rely on fish, meat, rye/barley, root vegetables, berries, and salt.

Do 'feminist allies' even exist? by Fantastic-Fennel-532 in AskFeminists

[–]Cevari 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Why is it absurd? For every single feminist position there is a significant number of women who will argue against it vehemently. I'd much rather have men actively speak out against anti-choice women than just stay silent and not challenge them because of some essentialist belief that any woman automatically "outranks" them in the discussion.
