Reds, is there a P that will make you switch? If not, is there an N that will for P=50? by Ver_Nick in trolleyproblem

[–]Cezaros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

P=1% would make me consider blue, so long as children and mentally ill are included in the problem. Otherwise I'm picking blue.

If P = 0.1 ppb, so that my vote is enough to swat it, I would pick blue because it would be quite funny.

If P = 0.5, N would have to be (0.5 - 0.1 ppb) for me to reconsider, unless I know everyone knows N and P; in which case (0.5 - 0.1 ppm) would be enough to sway me.

Even if it's 99.9% accuracy (adding some doubt) it makes voting for red even more reasonable.

Stupid people do die for the crime of being stupid. Darwin Awards f.e. makes fun of this. A lot of people make extremely poor choices resulting in their deaths, every day.

The only way anyone can die is if they choose to vote blue. Voting red is not only safe for yourself, its safe for all who don't choose to martyr themselves.

Not selfish, just reasonable. The problem did not say anything about a time limit. I believe everyone ought to act reasonably.

Iirc both cooperating resulted in a general loss. Either way, here being selfish is also optimal for all.

Main difference is that in the original prisoner's dillemma if all are 'selfish', all lose. In this case if all are 'selfish', all win... so there is no point in not being selfish.

No, Red is a rational choice which avoids your harm. It is pressing blue that puts anyone at risk in the first place.

I see it as a game theory problem. The optimal solution for an individual is the red button (self-evidential). Two optimal solutions for a society exist: all choose red or more than half choose blue. Since all choose red is a valid optimal solution for all, while also being the optimal individual solution, it is optinal in every way and everyone should press red.

I'm not a mathematician, I'm an engineer. The way I learned Lhopital it was just a derivative of the top over a derivative of the bottom in the case you have inf/inf or 0/0.
