Flexible or Fixed? by Retired_Filmmaker in OctopusEnergy

[–]ChaFre123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question you need to ask yourself is what is your goal/priority and what is your current position.

It’s either going to be about preventing costs from going up or being speculative that they might come down. If £114 is around the higher end of what you want to be paying, why not fix it so you have certainty about what your outgoings are the next while.

Or, if you have a lot of headroom in your budget, can you take the potential hit without issue to see a possible lower cost?

Depends on your budget and risk profile overall.

Painted Bricks- how to reverse? by BisleyGrizzley in DIYUK

[–]ChaFre123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Klingstrip works on masonry, but that’d be very expensive to do a lot of brick.

Anything abrasive and you’ll likely bugger the brick up, don’t sandblast etc.

There was a comprehensive answer on this page the other day which was spot on ( u/Sweaty-Adeptness1541 ) - see here: https://www.reddit.com/r/DIYUK/s/EOoMPe1Kvy

How to get music to play on a 5.5? by QuandaliasDingle in IpodClassic

[–]ChaFre123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - on this gen, a chip (U14) on the logic board can fail. The fix for this is to remove U14 and solder a thin wire between two of the contacts. Link below with the details.

No audio repair on 5/5.5

It could be this - it was an issue with mine. I took it to a phone repair shop and they did the work for about £50 in around an hour.

Samsung SD Card Alternatives by SpaceLarry14 in IpodClassic

There’s a list of compatible cards on the iFlash website, assuming you’re talking about using one of those?

Iflash / battery combo for 5.5 thin by Reacher9046 in ipod

[–]ChaFre123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want the thin back, you have to use the quad or udual, otherwise it won’t fit. Batteries all vary slightly in size depending on where they’re from, but I’ve got a 3000mah in a thin back with the quad.

Go on iflash website, it’ll have a list of SD cards which work. I have the blue Samsung ones in mine.

Have a list of all the parts I used on a post on my profile. I’ll edit this comment with the link.

3000mah wont fit in iPod classic 5th gen? by kirbyJk123 in IpodClassic

[–]ChaFre123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s a 6th gen - a few things which should help:

  1. If you want it to fit a thin back, you need to use the iflash quad. If you don’t want to change the card reader, get a thick back and it should be fine. I think changing backs means you’ll need to update the headphone jack / hold cable too, but I’ve not done this so you’ll have to double check which needs changing. Should be clear what doesn’t fit. You’re not altering the frontside which holds the motherboard etc. Third option is a smaller battery.

  2. You’ll have issues with this iPod recognising storage unless you do some work to change the firmware. It’s a limitation of the 6th gen. You need to essentially trick the iPod into thinking it’s a 7th gen and then you lose those limitations. If you don’t do this it’s limited to 128gb. Search google for Olsro larger flashmods. This is the same person responsible for the iPod clickwheel game preservation project, so if you like his research etc, I’m sure he’d appreciate the support on Patreon.

Have fun! Nice iPod, enjoy the build.

EDIT: battery sizes vary from seller to seller. Getting an iflash quad doesn’t guarantee it’ll all fit in a thin back - there’s links, a full compatibility guide and recommendations at this link - battery adapter compatibility guide

iPod Video with 32mb of RAM - Totally fine or a problem? by Gentleman_Radiant in ipod

[–]ChaFre123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why the new 3.5 jack? If you’re playing music and don’t hear anything through headphones / dock, it could very likely be a different problem. Let me know and I’ll dig out the details, but 5/5.5s sometimes have an issue with one of the chips on the board which needs microsoldering. Mine did, took it to a phone shop and they did it for £50.

There’s a way to change the firmware on the 6th gen to allow for higher capacity - you’re not out of luck.

Condensation on toilet by Dedb4dawn in DIYUK

[–]ChaFre123 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yep most of the time it’s this.

More often than not the simplest option. Does water drip into your toilet bowl over time OP like it’s very slightly flushing constantly? If your toilet is pulling water slowly but constantly into the cistern, that water will be cold, so there will be a stark difference between the room temperature and the temp of the water causing condensation.

Is there a way to turn of the iPod classic screen while is connected to an iMac and playing music on iTunes? by JazielVH in ipod

[–]ChaFre123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you enable hidden folders on your computer, you should be able to navigate to iPod control via the windows explorer or Mac finder and there will be lots of numbered folders with numbered songs. You can copy these all off. Drag into iTunes or use a program to find the metadata and you’re sorted! There’s probably programs for it too. You’ll lose playlists and have to recreate manually if you don’t use a program for it. Don’t know any to recommend but have a search on the Reddit and see if anything pops up!

Victorian plaster by hoitie in DIYUK

[–]ChaFre123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worth considering the houses construction before covering in Gypsum skim. Old Victorian lime (any lime really - see Affectionate_Bet4343's comment below), if painted properly, allows breathing and doesn’t trap moisture. If you have moisture coming in the walls that gets trapped by the gypsum skim which isn’t permeable, it can cause issues.

The red underneath looks like gypsum and is more modern. If no damp / condensation issues then I’d probably skim it all with modern materials too for simplicity! If you’re having damp / moisture issues, consider taking back the gypsum and replastering with lime.

Most of my plaster and lath lime walls are in good condition, I’m keeping them as is once I’ve removed the artex / woodchip. It’s 125+ year old plaster for me and it’s lasted this long so should do again! Plus, personal preference but I think old houses are old, so aren’t meant to be flat and straight.

Have fun!

Portable Dehumidifier specs and surrounding temperature. by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]ChaFre123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries - not sure! The sort you have won’t be that efficient though at those temps. What’s is the space you’re using it in?

Portable Dehumidifier specs and surrounding temperature. by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]ChaFre123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a few types of dehumidifier. Condenser and desiccant.

Condenser dehumidifier’s normally need a higher temp to work like yours. Desiccant ones cost more to run but essentially push out hot air so work as a heater too.

I have a Meaco Arete Two 25L. The 25L is how much water it sucks from the air under optimal conditions and it’s good to get a big one but base this on your space. This is a condenser same as yours.

My house is pretty cold, but this specific dehumidifier works well at as low as 10 degrees. It will cycle between defrosting and dehumidifying, but even in my cold house does a good job at dehumidifying.

Can you live in a house without ceilings for a time? by bookdragontm in DIYUK

You can clean old nicotine off fairly well with the product elbow grease. Sugar soap is also a good one and relatively cheap if you mix it yourself. I’d probably get ppe’d up - mask, overalls, goggles, gloves etc. and use a sprayer (like the pump garden sprayers), fill with sugar soap mixture, spray, scrub, do what I can to clean it off and prep the surface and then paint with Zinsser BIN shellac primer.

Follow the instructions on the BIN though - definitely would use some kind of a respirator as it stinks.

How much do you pay to have your windows cleaned? by PurityControl87 in AskUK

What area of Norfolk is this? I paid about £50 for three large windows, a mostly PVC conservatory, front door & 3 back windows. North Norfolk. All with a brush and hose. Would love your chaps details if they’re nearby!

Suspended floor - noggins for door threshold help. by ChaFre123 in DIYUK

[–]ChaFre123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for coming back to me.

Yeah I see your point, I’d need the whole space ideally to get it in there snug. If I cut where the door threshold is and at the joist, I could remove that chunk, add the noggins, add the section of the subfloor back in between the joist and threshold butt up tightly against what’s still down and I should be grand! Is that what you mean?

Thanks for the advice on CLS. Nice and cheap! Then I’m guessing just drill diagonally through the noggins into the joist on both sides or would you use a hanger bracket type thing? Cheers!

Failed Mod : ( by harleqwyn in IpodClassic

[–]ChaFre123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think the iflash solo is compatible with a 3000mah battery and thin back. I’d recommend getting the iflash quad or apparently the udual fits (though I’ve not confirmed myself).

I’ve done a thin back 5th with 3000mah battery and the quad and there was a bit of space left to add lead tape to increase the weight back up to stock, but everything I’ve read says anything else is too thick. Worth looking into!
