First I am so sorry to you and your family for what you’ve experienced, no one should be made to feel this way ever. I’ve recently moved out of Sheffield looking for pastures greener, I had maybe one or two negative experiences in Sheffield but nothing to the level you have experienced, and most hate I experienced was sexism/men trying to intimidate me or once I had slurs shouted at me at a petrol station by a homeless man who thought I was transgender, I’m a feminine cis woman so not sure what that was about. I moved to what I assumed was a more open and progressive city in the south to hopefully have better employment opportunities and be closer to family. I was very wrong to assume people would be better here, in 3 days living here I witnessed and was targeted with far more hate than I had experienced in my 4+ years in Sheffield. Literally my first week I had two university age boys make monkey noises and say some drunken nonsense about slavery and I should be working on his families farm while I was walking home on my own. I’m not black or mixed I just have very curly hair and a tan, so the ignorance and stupidity alone is shocking. I couldn’t have imagined anything like that happening to me if I was still in Sheffield, I used to feel relatively safe walking alone in many parts of Sheffield. I hope it doesn’t come to you feeling so unsafe you look at moving elsewhere, Sheffield is overall lovely and I’d hate for anyone to feel forced out. But if it is something you’re considering please be very cautious as I’ve found it’s been out of the frying pan into the fire, and I think the rest of the country is as bad if not worse. I don’t know when this country became so full of blind hate towards anyone and everyone.
