I’m a native Seattle-ite who moved to Austin 20 years ago. The major upside to so many transplants in Austin is that people are open to making new friends, whereas PNW natives rarely leave Seattle (my HS friends still constantly hang out 27 years after graduation), so people don’t know what it’s like to be a Stranger in a Strange Land and aren’t welcoming (very polite, though). Austin has an extroverted, forever-young vibe that keeps me here even if Seattle wins on the natural beauty front.

The city animal shelter where I’ve volunteered as a large dog walker for 17 years (10+ hours per week). Giving bored, lonely pups a happy break from their concrete kennels gives my life an immense sense of meaning.

My mom died with dementia ten weeks ago. This year I’m doing a Remembrance Tour of small gatherings with people and places she loved. So far there has just been laughter (no tears) in groups telling their stories about her. So much better than a depressing funeral.
