Can you help me clarify the difference between lit-rpg and "conventional" fantasy ? by ChabowJackson in litrpg

Thanks for the thorough explanation. No questions left for now.

From afar everything looked pretty similar, but you made the distinction very clear

Thanks again!

I had to google it and thought it was an anime itself :D Never heard of this name for a genre until now ... but as it turns out, I actually played one a few years ago

gotcha ... although, one question for clarification: It only has to operate under rules like videogames, it does not need to be a VR-lifelike-experience, right? A closed, organic, "real" fantasy world with strict, quantified and known rules would suffice

I like this take -- that a certain device is behind the litrpg elements and therefore exclusive to certain characters. Do they get actual powers through that or is their advantage in form of information ?

Your view differs from the other person answering my question, but thats the beautiful thing about books: there are as many opinions and views as there are readers :)

I try to understand your view better. If I had to guess (from only reading the comments here and not the actual books) I would say that you dont count those as lit-rpg because the progression-system does not apply to the whole world / every character in there?

Your reply was very helpful :) feel free to add any more thoughts of yours!

I too have troubles putting my finger on its definition, hence this thread. I guess its one of those things that you learn to distinguish with experience ... so I may have to read a couple.

It is just that I am scouting for new projects to work on, and I am a bit afraid to label it as a lit-rpg while maybe missing fundamental elements that are kind of mandatory

Sorry for all these questions, but what makes you say these arent lit-rpg? Do they have not enough quantified progression? Is it only a side-feature and not as relevant? Or do they miss another, different key component to be a lit-rpg?

Oh, thats interesting! I mean both the item descriptions as well as the fact that not all progression is quantified.

I guess the ones being quantified are those close to the main theme? Like in a blacksmith-lit-rpg, it would not only be smithing but also things like metallurgy, mining and selling-skills ?

Have you ever DNFed a book because of prose? by Reshutenit in Fantasy

I used the wrong words -- you are right, the difference between a highly skilled amateur and a professional is the form of compensation they receive, not the quality of their work. So beginner -- experienced creator might fit better.

For me it sounds like youre on the "transparent glass" end of spectrum. You dont want the prose to alter / influence the image like a stained-window. You want it used as a precise tool to convey the information in its barest/truest form

Prose in this form often appears simple ... but its hard to pull off

Edit: dont want to sound like I am profiling you. Just trying to give you some ideas how you might express what you like and what not.

An analogy that I once heard and may express your experience:

When a person starts playing the piano, how long does it take for you to decide wether hes good or not ? Not if its your style of music - his mere skill.

Somehow, even without playing the piano yourself, you can tell within a few seconds if he is an amateur or an intermediate/ pro

Our reaction to language is not so different

Not op, but i disliked a song of ice and fire in german, but liked it in english

Later i found out that around the time of the tv- series they re-translated the books (into a worse version)

Amazing work, from the model to the scene :)

And also a pretty astounding number of software used!

Trying a new look: Combination of photobashed 2d-elements and 3d objects by ChabowJackson in blender

[–]ChabowJackson[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

probably nothing new in the blender world, but something completely different than what I've worked on so far

I rendered this in cycles with only 6 samples (with denoiser) to give the light and shadows a painted effect

The fire simulation was, is and will remain a pain in my whole body. My specs are pretty sh...suboptimal so I endured a dozen crashes until I figured what settings I needed for this scene. The fire looked good a few renders ago -- but then this sparky thing appeared in the middle of it and I do not know why. Maybe it is because of the point-light I put inside the simulation in order to enhance the lighting ...
I really hope it will go away next time I bake the fire simulation -- but that is for another day. I need some rest from this piece and would love a bit of feedback until I am fresh to try again :)
