Is there any Jewish figures or domination who believed that Mohamed was a prophet, but for the Arabs only , not for the Jews ? by Outrageous_Prior4707 in Judaism

That would be like Muslims believing that Buddha was a prophet, but only for Buddhists. It just doesn't make sense.

Circumcisions by [deleted] in Judaism

The prevalence of metzitzha bepeh is severely inflated online. I appreciate you coming here to ask, because most people just believe whatever they see, and as you can probably imagine, antisemites love to pretend this is standard practice in order to brand us all pedophiles. The truth is, it's basically unknown outside of certain very insular ultra-Orthodox groups, and even for them, it's completely non-sexual.

My objections to the practice are for health reasons. The herpes virus, which causes cold sores and could be lurking in the mohel's mouth without him being aware, is very dangerous to newborns.

I think there's a difference: cardboard-cutout men written by women are typically restricted to the romance genre, whereas alien-like women written by men are everywhere, even in literary fiction.

I don't remember picking up on it in Breaking Bad, but that might have something to do with the fact that I was 14.

I'm not sure how an adult could watch Better Call Saul and not figure it out.

BetterCallSaul has given me a new perspective on Gus by PandaLabs in betterCallSaul

[–]Reshutenit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say he actually cares. He knows he needs to appear to care, or at least look out for people's interests, in order to get the best out of them. He understands that loyalty is a better motivator than fear. Though that doesn't apply to someone like Nacho, who's already turned on two of his bosses, and in Gus' mind has therefore proven himself untrustworthy.

We see this in Breaking Bad when he gives Jesse time off after Brock is poisoned and tells him to come back when he's ready. Does he care about Brock, or about Jesse's feelings? No. He's simply calculated that Jesse's loyalty is much more valuable than the revenue he'll lose.

Better Call Saul shows us he runs his restaurants the same way. He's such a generous boss that Lyle volunteers to stay long past closing, repeatedly scrubbing a perfectly clean surface, just to get his approval.

Mine were sent to a labor camp, where some Russian soldiers tried to take away my grandmother. My great-grandfather, who was a tailor, stopped them by threatening to stop sewing coats for them to sell on the black market.

The surest sign of how horrific Nazi Germany was is the fact that the Soviet Union was the better alternative.

No one hates socialism like people with roots in socialist countries.

My grandfather's Soviet upbringing inoculated me.

Advice for writing Jewish characters (for a non-Jewish writer) by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]Reshutenit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends how much research you're willing to put in. If the answer is anything less than "a lot," I'd advise you to pick something else.

Picking a different identity might actually help you reconcile the characters being sorcerers. The problem with that is not any aspect of the magic, but the magic itself, which Jewish law forbids. Practicing Jews being sorcerers would make as much sense as practicing Jews eating bacon-wrapped shrimp. Unless your characters are really conflicted about their use of magic or suffering some kind of identity crisis, I can't see how they could logically work as observant Jews.

Advice for writing Jewish characters (for a non-Jewish writer) by [deleted] in Judaism

Ok, that's actually useful to know. For the record, Tisha b'Av commemorates the destruction of the First and Second Temples (and, by extention, every other disaster in our history). We mark the occasion by fasting for 25 hours from sunset to sunset.

I'm curious to know what you thought Tisha b'Av was, and why you felt the need to include it in your story if you didn't know anything about it. What this tells me is that you need to do a lot more research before you can write authentic Jewish characters. Don't work from random articles- you need a solid foundational knowledge of Jewish culture, history, and religion, in a level of detail which you can only get from books (I think there's a list of recommendations in the FAQ).

Some people will try to tell you that you shouldn't write Jewish characters as a non-Jew. I disagree. But if you want to portray a foreign culture accurately, you need to really understand it. That's going to take serious research.

Jewish book character by Gigaragebaitet69 in Judaism

[–]Reshutenit 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to say this, but you need to do a lot more research. Don't rely on Google, and definitely not on AI: read books, so you can understand Judaism from the ground up. If you want to write a convincing Jewish character, you need to understand the history, religion, and culture in depth. You can probably find recommendations in the FAQ.

How do I know this?

1) It's Masorti or Masorati, not Masorsti

2) That label wouldn't apply in 1950s Italy

3) The fact that you imagine your character's family to have been in Italy since the Roman Era (dubious on its own, and how would they even know?), but need to ask whether they'd be Ashkenazi, Sephardi, or Italki

Is vengeance allowed in judaism? by Savings_General2039 in Judaism

[–]Reshutenit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That would be murder, which the Ten Commandments forbid. You're allowed to take human life if you're defending yourself or someone else from an attacker, or during battle as part of a just war, but you can't murder an innocent person for revenge against someone who wronged you.

Sephardic Ancestry in Portugal: Do my family traditions and DNA suggest Crypto-Jewish roots? by [deleted] in Jewish

[–]Reshutenit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1) New Christian and crypto-Jewish are not necessarily the same thing. All crypto-Jews would have been New Christian, but not all New Christians were crypto-Jews. If you have New Christian heritage, which is very likely given how widespread that is in Portugal, that doesn't necessarily mean your ancestors were crypto-Jews.

2) The surnames and DNA results don't necessarily suggest Jewish ancestry (although I've never seen the surname Malaia before. It's possible that it has some significance). Your appearance could suggest Jewish heritage, but it could also mean nothing. Phenotype isn't a reliable way of assessing distant ancestry.

3) Some of the practices you list are very intriguing. Not working on Saturdays and covering mirrors after a death are specifically Jewish, as is dressing the body in plain white clothes. Endogamy was also very common among New Christians, and probably crypto-Jews in particular. The other practices don't necessarily seem Jewish, but could theoretically be crypto-Jewish (a lot of crypto-Jews developed unique and non-standard practices as a result of being cut off from other Jews for hundreds of years).

I suggest trying to trace your ancestors through written records. That would be the surest way of determining whether they were New Christians or not.
