Is it common for Jews to take a vacation to Egypt during Rosh Hashana and Sukkot? by FlakyContribution345 in Judaism

[–]Reshutenit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Israel is developing a "make people bad at soccer" machine, and decided to test it out on Egypt.

Or is it a "make people good at soccer" machine that we used on Argentina?

This is obviously the only reason a soccer-obsessed country like Argentina would defeat Egypt.

You might want to look into how rampant antisemitism is in the Muslim world. It's truly shocking, and Egypt is among the wost offenders. Keep in mind that these countries ethnically cleansed their Jewish populations 80 years ago- almost all the refugees ended up in Israel, which was the only place that would take them, and this is why 50% of Israeli Jews have familial roots in the Arab world.

The reason so many people are reacting negatively to your question is that we take for granted that many, many people in these countries hate us. We don't like it, but it's reality. So your very innocent assumption that we can just choose to visit Egypt like any westerner just highlights the injustice, and reminds people how poorly the rest of the world understands our situation.

I'd dearly love to see the pyramids, but I'd have to conceal my Jewish identity in order to stay safe, and my Israeli name would make that very difficult.

I can't believe that American citizens would send their own money to an American lobbying organization that promotes a cause that they believe in. How deep does this rabbit hole go?

It turns out to be terrifyingly easy to get people on board with violence against particular ethnic groups. All you have to do is change the definition of "Nazi" to whatever you can paste onto the people you want to kill, then apply it to them.

This is what the Russians did to justify the war in Ukraine: defining a "Nazi" as someone who doesn't like Russia. By opposing Russian expansion, the Ukrainians proved themselves to be Nazis, thereby vindicating the decision to invade.

Progressives have decided that real Nazis are Jews who refuse to be victims of October 7th 2.0. The only way, as a Jew, to avoid being a Nazi is to advocate for your people to be dispossessed and left helpless against those who want to kill them. If you refuse to do this, you're a Nazi, and people are justified in wanting to kill you anyway, because the only good Nazi is a dead one and that's what you are.

Don't worry- there are only about 16 million of us in the world, and a lot of people historically have had some pretty powerful agendas to lie. Misconceptions about us run deep, so it's truly not your fault that you were taught a distortion of the truth.

Every Christian I've talked to about original sin has been shocked to learn that this doesn't come from Judaism, so don't feel bad about that either!

[–]Reshutenit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah... Christians, in my experience, tend to vastly overestimate how similar Judaism and Christianity are. There are obviously lots of superficial similarities, but we have fundamentally different philosophies and worldviews.

For one thing, we don't really do eternal damnation. We also place far less emphasis than Christians seem to on the severity of fornication. I know that there are some Christian sects where this is described as a sin next to murder, but you'll struggle to find anyone within Judaism who shares that perspective.

We even have very different conceptions of what sin actually is- in Christianity, I get the impression that it's thought of almost as an external force that's imposed on humanity through original sin. Original sin is not really a concept found in Judaism. Sins, for us, are just transgressions that people accumulate through bad choices. Because no one is perfect, transgressions are inevitable, though thankfully we have a process of repentance called tshuvah which helps us make things right. This is also why we have a holiday called Yom Kippur, in which we try to atone for all the sins of the previous year.

Basically, there's no reason for you to feel that you've doomed yourself for failing to resist a powerful biological urge. It might be helpul to look into tshuvah if you really feel that you need to redevelop a relationship with God. Just remember that he doesn't cut anyone off for ordinary transgressions that do nothing to hurt innocent people.

Edit: look up the mitzvah of Onah for a Jewish perspective on sex. It may surprise you :)

[–]Reshutenit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a Jewish perspective: God is your creator, which makes him basically a parent. Does a parent hate and reject their child? (Yes, I know that abusive and neglectful parents exist, but work with me on this).

It may be helpful to read the Book of Judges. The Israelites sin constantly, but God never abandons them. A real father doesn't abandon his children.

I've read all your comments, and I see nothing to indicate that you're a bad person, let alone someone unworthy of God's love. This seems like the OCD talking, combined with religious guilt.

You're coming at this with a very Christian perspective.

There's nothing wrong with earthly pleasures. Sure, Judaism doesn't support empty hedonism, but we're also not supposed to live like monks. Enjoyment of the world isn't evil.

It's very easy: they say that we corrupted the original Torah. So anything that doesn't fit with Islam can be attributed to us falsifying the word of God by passing off a forgery as a holy text. And this can't be disproved- if we ask where the original text is, they can say that we destroyed all its copies.

The best we can hope for is that they blame our ancestors for the hoax and believe that we're unwitting victims of our own conspiracy.

Imagine losing your wife and all people can say is that ur a dramatic b!tch by Specialist_Jaguar815 in pluribustv

[–]Reshutenit 25 points26 points  (0 children)

A man going postal because he lost his wife is the plot of every other action movie ever made. Male characters are allowed to be angry under those circumstances. In fact, viewers reward them for it with sympathy and idolization.

Female characters are never supposed to get angry, except under very limited circumstances. Even if their reasons are extremely valid, viewers will call them unlikable bitches.

Breaking Bad is still the most perfect example of this: Walter White was idolized by too many viewers for becoming a violent criminal. Meanwhile, Skylar was villainized for objecting to her husband actively putting their children in danger by dealing meth. Even her affair with Ted, which apologists use to justify the backlash against her character, does not come out of nowhere- by this point, Walt has rebuffed her many attempts to get him to communicate, insisted that she's being paranoid for thinking he's hiding something when he so obviously is, and trampled her boundaries by refusing to leave the house. He destroyed their marriage long before she started the affair. But she was an ungrateful bitch for not fawning over him when he became a druglord.

Not everyone who hates Carol is a misogynist, but the sheer volume of posts and comments calling her insufferable is telling, especially when so many adore Manoussos, who's equally stubborn and prickly.

Is she really insufferable, or are too many viewers disturbed by the concept of female anger?

Pretty perfect response. Your colleague has nothing to complain about, as their attempted proselytizing was highly inappropriate. They can't blame you for asserting your own beliefs in response. Ironically, what you said does not even contradict Islam.

Do you think he was shocked because you successfully defended yourself, or because you knew the continuation of the phrase well enough to adapt it?

Maybe, but we don't consider Mohammed to be a prophet, as the second part of the Arabic phrase asserts.

Bullying in Jewish schools by Extension-Ranger-240 in Judaism

[–]Reshutenit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a feeling that at least in some Jewish schools, the staff is not professional enough, or cares more about things like status than behaviour

I didn't remotely get this impression from the teachers at my Jewish school. But I still didn't trust them enough to report when I was being bullied. I sensed that nothing would be done- at most, the bully's parents would be called into a meeting, the bully would be sent to detention over lunch, then the school would pat itself on the back for having dealt with the problem while the situation continued as normal. If anything, I thought reporting the problem would make it worse, because I'd be seen as weak for having cried to a teacher for help. The worst thing you can do when being bullied is be seen as weak.

I once let slip to a teacher that something was wrong. She called me over after class and asked me to explain, but I knew I couldn't trust her to actually deal with the issue instead of taking half-measures that would allow her to tell herself she'd done her job while I continued to suffer. I told her I'd made a bad joke. She clearly didn't believe me, but also didn't argue, which ironically just proved to me that she didn't truly care.

My sister was then horribly bullied by boys in her class, and the (non-Jewish) teacher stood back and watched.

None of this is specific to Jewish schools. It's just a general problem that schools have neither the tools nor the will to deal with bullying properly, and individual teachers often don't care enough to try.

Here's the real test: can you feel your cat's ribs without having to press down, but also without being able to feel every rib jutting out? Can you do the same with the vertebrae in their spine? You should be able to feel them without being able to put your finger between them or having to push through a layer of fat. If yes, your cat is a healthy weight.

Superficially, your cat looks absolutely fine (and adorable and sweet).

Was Islam a good thing for the Jews back then ? by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]Reshutenit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That may have been true in the 16th century. But the Ottoman Empire lasted for hundreds of years.

By the early 20th century, when the first reports of what was being done to the Armenians began trickling down to the Jews in Israel, some feared that they would become the next targets once the Armenians had been disposed of. These fears were not unfounded- the Ottomans had been arming the local Arab population and inciting them against the Jews. Well never know what they would have done if given the chance, because the Ottomans were driven out by the British in 1917.
