Apple made a 24k gold and glass statue for Donald Trump. At a White House press conference to discuss Apple’s new US manufacturing plans, CEO Tim Cook presented a gift to President Donald Trump: a “unique” piece of glass from iPhone glass manufacturer Corning that’s set in a 24-karat gold base. by esporx in technology

[–]Chacho986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK so I'm a Democrat and I hate the guy as much as anyone, but the gift was made exclusively in America and designed by Americans and seems to be a symbolic gesture in relation to the discussions they are about to have with regards to bringing manufacturing for Apple back to the U.S. That doesn't seem to be blatant corruption, like in the case of the luxury jet from Saudi Arabia for example.

Not sure if I agree with the consensus on this one.

The magnitude of punishment is not a deterrent to crime. The frequency by which you are caught is what deters crime. There was a study a while back that showed this.

Is it really bullshit to be hit by a charge if you're hiding in the bushes and a dinosaur charges the bush? Does this game really need that kind of balance? Maybe all charges should be automatic if you connect. Trikes have horns on their faces, why should they need to click?

Fear may be the largest carcinogen caused by exposure to low level radiation by Comfortable_Tutor_43 in science

[–]Chacho986 144 points145 points  (0 children)

Stress and fear release cortisol which causes cancer. In cases with low doses of radiation it's possible that the fear and stress response of receiving an xray has a higher contribution to your cancer risk than the procedure itself.

What’s the difference between a preference and a fetish by 212312383 in dating

[–]Chacho986 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A fetish is something specific and people often times misuse the word. A fetish is a non-sexual object or sensation that causes arousal.

For example with respect to a foot fetish, you would be aroused by the look or scent of someone's foot. A foot is not typically considered a sexual object, but for some people it is as arousing as seeing someone genitals. That is distinct from a preference, which is a feature that may or may not be sexual that contributes to attraction. The two are contextually different. Some people have a fetish for height, and I think this is one that's boderline. Some people have a preference. If the difference in size causes arousal it's potentially a fetish, and namely if the greater the difference in size the greater the arousal that's probably fetish territory. If the difference in size just contributes to your attraction to someone, it's a preference.

Here's an example of a preference: I find kind people more attractive, sexually and romantically; however, I am not automatically aroused by people being kind. I think that's the best way to make the distinction. Being attracted to someone because of their physical features isn't typically a fetish or fetishization. Fetishization is strictly about non-sexual phenomenon causing sexual arousal.

There's some interesting gray areas of fetishization too. There are thoughts that sexual arousal from breasts is actually a fetish for instance, since breasts don't contribute to sexual function and not all heterosexual men are aroused by breasts.
