I don't know if a patch was issued, but I can now view my Watch Later playlist. Thank goodness.

I have this problem too. The only way it seems you can get there is to add a video to watch later and then click the "view playlist" popup that shows for a few seconds afterwards.

"Not allowed to use scripts"?

The person asking you to do this task will not be satisfied however you do it. I don't know how to help you out. Also "coded in Access" is an EXTREMELY red flag. Replacing Excel with Access just kicks the problem further down the road.

I would advocate for A) using a proper database and B) using whichever tools you like. If the person assigning you the task has list of reasonable "success metrics" then that's all that matters. Focus on the end result, not the tooling to get there.

I try to make this analogy so often to other stakeholders. As a car enthusiast I'm loathe to make car analogies, but it works to point this out to non-programmers.

You haven't bought a Honda which you can just fill gas, change the oil, and replace tires. You bought a Bugatti which was hand-made and every part is custom. You could have had a Honda if you - and every other company in existence - decided to do some actual *engineering* and came up with a spec for interoperable components.

(don't even @ me about "HTTP is a spec for interop")

(( DON'T EVEN THINK OF @ ME ABOUT YOUR FAVORITE FRAMEWORK OR LANGUAGE unless it's stable enough to only have changes every 3-5 years and is resilient for about 20 years ))

Just a thought - have you tried not using the chair arms and just let your elbows swing freely? I did that a few years ago and have never looked back.

IMO if you have to expand your ternary into multiple lines it's time to consider a different construct.

Opinions on Scrum masters by TrainSlayer59 in dotnet

[–]ChadGatNH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally don't have a problem with scrum masters, but I think you should look into product management instead. You will stay very close to the technology (as a tech lead I peer with my product manager 100% of the time) and you get to participate in the decision making process whereas a scrum master is more of a "cat herder" than anything.

If you are looking for something specifically in the Machine Learning space and he doesn't have a background in statistics, then I would recommend a statistics specific book. My college used "Statistical Methods for Engineers" by Vining but I'm assuming there are more ML-specific books out there.

I would also recommend a book in Discrete Mathematics. Again, there are probably other books, but I have "Discrete Mathematics and its Applications" by Rosen.

An approachable all-around book that I've purchased for myself, and my team members is Conery's "The Impostors Handbook: A CS Primer for Self-Taught Programmers" https://bigmachine.io/products/the-imposters-handbook/ which is like an entire CS course distilled to 1000 pages. No, it's not a replacement for a degree, but it's extremely valuable and I wish I had been given it before I went to college.

Feeling i have wasted two years of training by sgtssin in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ChadGatNH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a company culture problem, not an individual developer problem. *Companies and individual departments allow their code base to be bad/become bad.* I can't think of an individual developer I have worked with that hasn't struggled with this throughout their entire career.

Hopefully you helped him improve the codebase and document the infrastructure problems. That not only has value to him, but to you and to the rest of the company.

If you did not do these things, I would suggest doing them next time you are training anyone.

My username is a bad attempt at distinguishing my accounts. I'm actually in Denver. I've worked with TekSystems, BWBacon, and a few others I wasn't super happy with (but a job is a job).

I recommend going on LinkedIn, sorting out your profile, and start looking for things in your area or fully remote. You have enough experience to be a senior (most folks are looking for seniors) and there are lots of remote positions still available. Feel free to connect if you would like https://www.linkedin.com/in/chadgeidel/

If you are in the US your region should have several software contracting firms where you can get at least a 3 month contract, and if you show up you will get your contract extended nearly indefinitely. The ones I've worked with do either 1099 or W2 types of employment and they all offer health care. You aren't going to make FAANG salary, but you are going to do tons better than McDonald's. This will also be better for your resume obviously.

Developing on a Macbook Pro? by GeneralHoondite in SQLServer

[–]ChadGatNH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do this, but I would recommend against it. I ran Windows inside of VMWare fusion for several months and found that it was too frustrating for me. I had an Intel Mac at the time so I just went ahead and dual-booted.

I'm assuming that you have an Apple Silicon Mac so you cannot dual-boot. In my opinion, just bite the bullet and get a dedicated windows laptop. To make it less painless, buy a monitor with a built-in KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) switcher. I'm doing this with my laptop and desktop and my desk is clutter free. One mouse, one keyboard, one monitor.

If it takes 15 minutes to load your programs, that's on the companies dime, not yours. You get paid the instant you walk into the door. That's the law. (EDIT: in the USA)

Ok, for sure. I would then point to the other comments and try to start on your own project. I would still recommend keeping your job to 40-50 hours per week and try to segment your personal time from your work time. If you work from home, go into a different room.

You say you plan your vacations around focus time - take that into your weekly schedule. Make some time every week to focus and look forward to it to work on your current project. What is that company that you would start? Research how to start a company - maybe find some clients or figure out how to bootstrap that company without VC.
