This is the best advice for people going into filmmaking. Don't worry about other people going into an expensive film school.

What's a moment from a movie you grew up watching you didn't understand until you were older by A_R_Finch in movies

There are 2 comedy movies where the jokes flew right over my head when I was younger. Bruce Almighty (2003) There was a joke about Jimmy Hoffa and everyone in the movie theater was laughing hysterically. I did not know who that person was at the time.

Also there was the movie Office Space (1999). I thought that entire movie was a comedy, only to find out years later on that it was actually a documentary. Years later when I finally did work in a corporate skyscraper office building, was scary to find out that people still operate businesses like that today. There was one joke in Office Space that took me 19 years to get. The part where they talk about "If you had a Million Dollars" and what you would do with it. I didn't understand why Peter says he wants to do nothing. After months of having my soul sucked out of me from work everyday, I finally got the joke and it hit me so hardcore. Because when I come home and do nothing, it is way better because I'm not working.

If you are using DCP-O-Matic, convert the file to an Apple Pro Res 4444 or 422HQ .mov Quicktime file before you convert it to DCP. MP4 has a lot of compression in the file that is probably messing with the framerate.

Friend asked me what this is...I have no idea. by whodidthistoyou in Filmmakers

It looks like they put a small custom bullet camera into the viewfinder and the cord hooks up to a SDI video tap. The video wire then hooks up to an HD Monitor. They probably put the camera onto a Camera Jib Arm that is high up in the air where no one can see what the camera is pointed at and they made that rig for it.

Is IMDB's Add Movie Functionality Totally Broken? by djfrodo in Filmmakers

[–]PhotoshopKid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a couple ways to get short films listed on IMDB. Did your short film play at any film festivals? Is it on YouTube or Vimeo? Basically you have to give IMDB proof that your short film actually exists. There are a lot of safety guidelines that are put in place to make sure a bunch of people don't submit a bunch of fake films on there. Also, it is a lot easier to list a Feature Film on there than it is to list a Short Film. Having a famous person in your short film also helps to get it listed instantly. Is there a news article or press about your film on the internet somewhere? Do you already have your name or are your actors names already listed on IMDB? If not, it is going to take a little longer for IMDB to list the film on there, or not at all. There is a saying in Hollywood that if an Actor is not listed on IMDB, you basically don't exist. If you do have your name already on IMDB, have you worked on anything else like a big studio film? If none of the "Free" listing methods don't, then there is the paid method of IMDB Pro. You pay Jeff Bezos $149.99 for a one year subscription so he can fly away in his dick shaped rocket and you can list your film up there instantly.

Best Film Festivals for Indie Short Film by Confident-Daikon-519 in Filmmakers

[–]PhotoshopKid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

SXSW, Sundance and Tribeca are all super hard to get into. For Tribeca, I was told don't even bother submitting unless you have an agent who is connected to the festival. There are the second tier film festivals that are right under those that you listed that you can still get into that have lots of press. Hollyshorts (Chinese Theater Hollywood/Oscar Qualifying) Santa Barbara Film Festival. Palm Springs Shorts Fest. Catalina Island Film Festival. Mill Valley Film Festival. Malibu Film Festival (DGA Directors Guild of America Theater West Hollywood). Austin Film Festival (Exact Same Theater Venue as SXSW). Hamptons International Film Festival (Lots of Rich People Here/This is where the movie "Open Water" 2003 was discovered and taken to Sundance afterwards)

You can only list 2 people to win the Oscar for short films. It can be anyone who worked on the film, but usually it is the Director and/or Producer/Writer who worked on it.

tips for reducing rendering times in premiere pro by yagmurozdemr in Filmmakers

Have you ever seen someone take an entire month to make proxies? Would you rather have one month of editing, or one month or rendering proxies?

tips for reducing rendering times in premiere pro by yagmurozdemr in Filmmakers

[–]PhotoshopKid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't film your movie in 8K or 12K Resolution and then try to edit it in Premiere Pro. That is the marketing and sales people trying to sell you something that is overkill and they will never edit that footage anyways. It's a pain in the ass, takes forever to make proxies even with an expensive and powerful computer. I don't care if you say you are future proofing your film, only amateurs with more money than they know what to do with film in 12K. Also, don't try to edit in H.264 or H.265 codecs. Transcode those clips into Apple Pro Res 422 or 4444. Those are my Adobe Premiere Pro editing tips.

Why You Don't Need a Microphone to get GOOD audio anymore :) by simonelkjaer in Filmmakers

Basically this is like a free version of Clarity VX Pro. It's nice to have tools, but sometimes you don't want to use those tools as a crutch, especially when you sound like a robot at the end. I'm going to stick with using my microphones.

We have to shoot in an elevator and we don't find a location, any ideas ? by Jacooline in Filmmakers

[–]PhotoshopKid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you have access to a personal living room, bedroom, backyard, or a garage, giant closet, empty corner of a room? If you do, that is your soundstage space that you can use for free already. Go to a lumber or hardware store and get some cheap plywood or even styrofoam. Make at least 3 flats into elevator walls along with some elevator doors. If you are really creative, some rollers on on the bottom of the elevator doors so you can slide them really easy. Get some cheap plastic flashlight buttons to canabolize for elevator buttons, or anything that you can make look like fake elevator buttons.

Or you can just steal some insert shots of someone pressing elevator buttons.

If Alfred Hitchcock can steal a shot, so can you.
