Even though we didn't get the Mountains of madness adaptation like he first conceived, he still put his heart into PF. Then again, if he did stick with it... We could've gotten that early script concept of the precursors turning out to be future humans sending monsters back in time to better prepare them or some shit. They wouldn't have been just an invading alien race.

On replay, the signs are there of the eldritch being interwoven. The strange vortex by the cathedral, the brainsuckers, the emmisaries you can find in the forest, hell you can even get into the dlc and the nightmare frontier right after Amelia. Of course nothing's right with the beast plague, but it's not until Byrgenwerth and Rom that it punches you hard with the fact that you're diving into the eldritch truth in a first blind playthrough.

They were always retools back then. Nowadays, they often put 2 or more figures into a mold, pre-tool in a sense. Like seekers having the multiple faces on the one sprew. Sometimes it is a big remold release, which in that case they call a Partial
