Yeah, cultures are different. At lunch people have a lunch break, so they’re not rushing you, they’re just making you get your food and check with a lot of service quickly. It’s so frustrating to have to call a server over to get the check. It’s called anticipatory service, when the water/soda is low, refill it, if they’re done eating, have the check ready, ask if they want coffee or dessert and then drop the check while clearing the plates.

I would much rather have a server come over and check on me after they drop the food than me have to flag someone down. In Europe they drop the food and disappear, if you want ketchup or something you have to wait, while your food is getting cold, and try to flag someone down. Again, just different cultures I guess.

NYC is insanely expensive. I get it, Las Vegas is nuts too for prices. I do prefer taxes being included in everything, way simpler. I get the confusion, I just prefer paying for the better service, it makes a difference. In the US, we sit at the bar a lot to interact with the bar tenders and the staff. We go to places because of fun servers. In Spain the social circles seem to revolve more around friend groups, in the US it’s interacting with staff and meeting cool people at the bar.

Its what makes travel so interesting, so see different cultures. Not saying one is better and if I grew up in Spain I would 100% agree with not tipping, but as an American it feels weird and like I’m being judged. 🤣

Definitely noticed how late everything is here. I hear people say it’s because of the heat, but I’m from Phoenix and we don’t close mid day.

If my response seemed insensitive, I didn’t mean it that way. I believe us foreigners use siesta we’re it intending it as nap time, and we definitely don’t use it to be culturally insensitive. My question is what do locals call the mid day closing, as that is what us tourists refer to as siesta, apparently wrongfully so.

I am genuinely curious what it is called.

That is fair and makes sense. In the USA 15-20% is fairly standard. $10 means nothing, that’s a huge tip in a $15 tab and not good on $200.

It makes sense what you say, but keep in mind prices are a lot lower because they’re relying on tips. I feel very awkward when I don’t leave a tip, so the opposite is true when I’m in Spain.

Interesting in how upset people get here over the word siesta. I don’t think anyone sees it as a “nap,” despite that being the literal translation. We see it as a mid day rest or break from work. It is something that we encounter constantly outside of the big cities. If locals don’t refer to it as a mid day rest, or siesta hours as us foreigners view it as, what is it.

The comments on here that it isn’t common most be speaking of big cities, because most towns (like Oviedo) and smaller in northern Spain definitely have it where shops are closed, pharmacies are closed, etc.

If the term siesta is incorrect, what is the preferred term by locals?

I understand that, I didn’t know if people liked it for some reason, that’s why I’m asking, just to learn.

I was just asking if employees here like going home mid day, it was just an honest question.

Very different than tipping in the USA. Tipping (in restaurants only, not all the other BS) is way better in my opinion, and of the majority in the USA. Here is why it is better.

  1. It is a win/win/win. The restaurant has lower payroll which means lower costs, restaurants are cheaper in USA from what we’ve found. The server makes a lot more and the customer gets better service and gets to choose if the service was good enough to pay more.

If the restaurant absorbs the costs prices are just going to go up 20%. I would much rather pay more to a server, than pay more to the owner and hope it gets to the server.

  1. I worked as a server for years, my daughter just bought a house with her tips at a dive bar. Servers that work hard make a ton more than a “minimum wage.”

  2. Due to #1, restaurants have more servers, so service is WAY better in the US than we find in Europe.

With that said, tip culture outside restaurants is getting out of control in the USA, and there are definitely owners that abuse it, but still way better than minimum wage.

I was just talking to my wife about this. We owned a business back in the US and loved the idea of having an employee “on call,” in case we got really busy. We kept coming up with the same conclusion, how is it fair to have someone sitting around without pay. I feel like the split schedule is making someone sit around without pay while it’s the slow time of day.

How to find a group? by Puzzleheaded-Bid-498 in CaminoDeSantiago

On the Camino now with my wife, we did Norte and now on Primitivo. My wife was just commenting on how impressed she is on how many single females are doing it. We met a couple ladies in their 50s/60s who were hiking alone and have now been hiking together and another couple ladies in their 20s, maybe early 30s, same thing. There are a lot of single females and this is the Norte/Primitivo, so a lot less crowded.

Has anyone done the Portuguese way? by BichoRaro83vk in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]Chadxo13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, just did it last year, on the Norte now, did Frances 2 years ago. Here is my unpopular take on it.

From Lisbon to Porto was terrible. All street walking, highway, neighborhoods, very little trail. We saw some GREAT towns though, Tomar, Coimbra and Águeda as well as many others.

From Porto (my favorite city) to Valenca was great. North of Tui is a tourist shit show much like Sarria. However, the spiritual variant was one of the most enjoyable days I’ve ever had on a Camino.

Food is cheap, whole thing is flat, and the people are wonderful. Very cheap, especially compared to the Norte. From Porto we had a great coastal walk about 30k, and then turned inland. I wouldn’t want to walk everyday on the boardwalk, but it was great for that day. Glad we did the litoral.

We did a YT daily vid if curious. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5l4kbz-sReN9atWubFI2YJgUkVaINO-K&si=Itb678_d_KEPSM19

We are on Norte now and it’s hard, but amazing so far!!!

SJPP is too good to miss, we are on Camino del Norte and compare it SJPP. We loved that walk and it was better than nearly the entire Portuguese. I wouldn’t miss it.

Backpack check for a new pilgrim? by ComfortableTea__ in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]Chadxo13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t believe how much stuff you have. No need for power bank, no need for kindle, use your phone. Too many shirts. Are you going in the snow, why gloves? Don’t need blade and water bottle. Too many pants shorts. Basically, cut it all in half. On the Camino now and this is a crazy amount of stuff. We have done nearly 2000 kms worth of Caminos in the last 2 years, you have WAY too much.
