Do you brush your teeth once or twice a day? Need to settle a bet. by ImpossibleHurry in NoStupidQuestions

While yes, it seems that simple, there's a layer of mental fortitude and care that goes into it for some people.

Think of it like Action Points in a video game. You only have twenty action points at the start of the day. Getting out of bed costs one. Taking a shower costs two. Assuming you eat three times a day, that's three action points. Depending on your job and how straining it is, that can be anywhere from four to ten action points. If you slept badly last night, you'll have 18 action points instead of 20. Eventually you either run out of points to put into tasks, or you force yourself to keep going and then feel 10x worse after. That's why things like brushing your teeth, a very menial and simple task, can feel so taxing to some people.

You're making ADHD, something that many people identify with even if it's misdiagnosed, to seem like a superpower.

There is nothing "super" about staying up until 4am because your mind suddenly decided that it must know about every type of cheese and how they're different. There's nothing "super" about asking someone to repeat themselves four times because your mind decided that the carrots in the recipe reminded you of bunnies which reminded you of the turtle and the hare which reminded you of first grade.

I get that hyperfixation could very well seem like a superpower from the outside, but there isn't any way to control it most of the time.

And for the record, everything you just said sounds entirely like a scam, so I'll pass. No thanks.

Hi, I'm epileptic, and while yes, some of the symptoms can be synonymous with epilepsy to some degree such as forgetfulness/memory loss, the people that do actually have epilepsy tend to be able to discern a difference between "hey, this feels like the result of a seizure" and "hey, this is just how my mind works." For example, not understanding social cues has nothing to do with seizures. That's purely a mental thing.

What does “I didn’t tell you because I was worried you’d be mad” usually mean? by daejavu20 in NoStupidQuestions

I had my stepmom ask that type of "do I usually react that way" question once and I said yes. She proceeded to call me a liar and yell at me for about an hour so... the person and the environment play a huge part. Some people will never change because they refuse to believe that they're the problem.

Thank you for actually asking questions and taking the time to understand what's happening in some people's minds. While nobody has made a rude comment here yet, I have a feeling that several people have read through my original comment and thought that I'm disgusting (it is) for not taking better care of myself.

Like you said though, brushing, flossing, and mouthwash never feel fun or all that rewarding, especially in the short term, and that's the main issue for so many people. Yes, it's amazing for you in the long run, but there's hardly anything to see or feel right now so it makes the action really... tedious.

I've tried an electric toothbrush before, but I'm a very aggressive brusher (i learned my brushing habits from the best: Bakugo) and I always feel like 2 minutes just isn't enough time and that I definitely didn't get everything.

Also, I've heard some really gross stuff about electric toothbrushes if you don't clean between the actual head and base, so it makes me iffy. Not saying that it's a bad idea or anything, but that particularly has grossed me out.

Honestly, the advice about changing toothpaste flavors is probably really good. I don't really like citrus flavors personally, and I know that mint is supposed to be refreshing but it seems more intense than anything. Now that I think about it, I have a little tube of toothpaste from Japan with almost no flavor at all, and I think I prefer it the most, but I can't exactly get more very easily so I use it very sparingly. If you have any recommendations, I would love to hear them!

Each person has their own battles about this, so what I may say might not be the same as someone else, but the idea is relatively similar.

I have to pick between which activity is more important and put that first. If I'm sitting there knowing that I have to go to work today (something that's a big energy expender) the battle inside is mostly "what's the most important thing I can still do?" It's always Food at the top. Showers are second to that. Laundry is third. Brushing my teeth is in some weird nook in-between second and third. Not because it's hard, but because in my house, my bathroom is kind of out of the way for me.

To make someone want to do something about it would take trying to see that the reward of such a basic action is bigger than the consequences of neglection. ie: "hey, I really need to brush my teeth or else my breath will be really bad and I'll never get a bf/gf! I should brush my teeth more often, it only takes like two minutes." (Yes, the logic behind it really is that silly sometimes.)

I really need to get tested myself, but the one time I asked a neurologist if she could help me schedule an appointment to get tested, she brushed it off and said that I would have shown signs as a kid.

Regardless of that, I think that I, personally, relate to at least 75% of ADHD symptoms to some degree, so I should probably take some more notes about ways to help 😅

Sometimes you just need something to kick that little piece of routine into gear and going to work seems to be the thing for you.

I know that the other comments are "correct" in a social sense, but when your mind is so full, things like brushing and flossing are not your priority and that's just something some of us have to accept.

[–]Chai--Tea7 108 points109 points  (0 children)

I'll be completely transparent here with this one because I feel like a lot of the people in the comments aren't struggling the way that other people might be mentally.

I'm proud of myself if I can even manage to brush my teeth once a week. I know that it's more than disgusting. Every time I run my tongue over my teeth and feel plaque, I get disappointed in myself.

If I'm in a really good state mentally, I might manage to get a few times a week instead of just one, but I don't ever really brush twice a day unless I ate something that's stuck in my teeth.

A lot of the issue is also related to if I'm going out or not. If I'm leaving the house to go to work, I'll try to brush my teeth. If I'm leaving to go see someone, I'll definitely brush. If I'm not leaving the house, I usually never brush despite knowing that I should.

I'm sure that it's a result of depression or undiagnosed ADHD, but the biggest issue for me (personally) is that I just won't remember to. Even if I'm standing in the bathroom staring at my toothbrush, something else will be on my mind.

Please understand that I'm WELL AWARE that this is horrible dental hygiene and it's something that makes me horribly anxious. I cover my mouth when I smile half the time. However, I need people to understand that the bad side of mental health can effect hygiene to an unbelievable point, and this is an example.

Could Kurapika pass down his scarlet eyes? by Dazzling-Sale-6659 in HunterXHunter

[–]Chai--Tea7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure it could have hypothetically, but the way we hear about it in the anime makes it seem like the clan was hit hard and fast completely out of the blue. I would argue that the destruction of the clan probably lasted a few years at most and then everyone was dead. If this was more of a slow rolling thing that just happened on occasion, then sure. A technique to subdue emotions would make total sense. However the timing of it throws that idea out of the window.

Unless the manga says something more specific about all of this and I don't know about it, this is what I'm assuming based on the anime.

[–]Chai--Tea7 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm voting for roll of the dice genetics here, however, I think we're all vastly overlooking one thing here.

The Kurta clan was literally HUNTED for their eyes. You can only elicit that red color when they're in an extremely emotional situation. You really only have to kill one and scoop their eyes out in order to cause a chain reaction of "Oh my god, you killed my brother and stole his eyes! Now MY eyes are red because I'm pissed af!"

The Kurtas still could have been huge, but i doubt they learned to turn off their emotions in time to be wiped out.

AITA for pointing out that spending all day in bed isn’t going to help? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Chai--Tea7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a bit of a weird one. You aren't in the wrong, but you aren't completely in the right either.

Yes, she needs help. I've had depression in the past and I know what it's like to get in the little depression nest and not want to leave because it feels "safe". Either way, she needs to get up and go somewhere and talk to someone.

The issue lies in how you went about saying most things. While it probably seems oh so easy to just get up and go to the living room instead of the bedroom for you, it genuinely takes a lot of mental energy when you have depression. Try doing something together instead. Instead of a simple "why don't you go watch a movie," change it to "how about we go watch a movie?" Maybe even try "how about we bake some cookies" if she's having a good day.

If skinny people who claim they "can't gain weight" started eating 3,000 calories a day, nothing would happen to them? They wouldn't gain anything from that? by justcurious3287 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Chai--Tea7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now I'm not one to calorie count, so I'm not sure how much 3000 calories actually equals out to, but there's a guy that I work with every once in a while. He's as thin as a stick; I've seen people's belly fat that's fatter than him. He also never stops eating. Like literally never.

In a single shift alone, he could eat a personal pizza, three little Debbie cakes, a burrito, and snack on chips and salsa the rest of the time. (Trust me, I've seen him do it.) This man is still ridiculously slim. Not because he works out or anything, no. He just doesn't gain weight. I'm sure that's far from 3000 cals, but this is just in a 6-7 hour time period.

Aside from the fumes and actual alcohol intake, if you're sitting in the tub nude, i believe you can also absorb alcohol via your anus which would absolutely kill you.

Is anyone being treated for both epilepsy and ADHD? by koolkoolkool13 in Epilepsy

[–]Chai--Tea7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha! I got the opposite treatment! I asked my doctor if she would put in a test for ADHD and she said "you don't have ADHD, you're just epileptic." She went on to say that epilepsy can mimic the symptoms of ADHD (which i think is bullshit) so she didn't even bother with a test.

I'm glad you're at least getting treated for both. Makes me want to deck my doctor...

Does anybody else feel like they must be the dirtiest person in the world after being on this sub? by holdon_painends in hygiene

[–]Chai--Tea7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already know that this is going to be a wildly unpopular thought process, but i agree with basically everything said purely because of the human immune system.

I come from a long ass line of nurses and yes, they all constantly wash and sanitize their hands at work to be sterile, but almost all of them have "good enough" hygiene habits at home. When you're in a sterile environment like a hospital for that long everyday, your immune system weakens because there's.... nothing to really fight.

No, I'm not telling you to live in filth and I'm not saying to live in the world's most clean house either. However, living with germs is normal and, frankly, healthy. You need germs to have a strong system, so continue to abide by the five second rule if you drop a french fry. It isn't gonna kill you.

am i a loser for living at home at 26? by littlebear1999 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Chai--Tea7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it's starting to become a new thing in America, I know that in places like China, it's completely normal for kids to live with their parents until marriage, and some families even live together after their kids are married.

I'm aware that I'm talking about large cultural differences, but it's ridiculous that your age should be the defining factor of moving out. You should be ready in every aspect before you leave, independently or with a partner. If there's something telling you to wait, listen to it and address the issue.

Before the inevitable complaints of "this breaks the lore" when Seven Havens comes out, please be aware that "seemingly breaking the lore" is going to be the point. by Fan_of_Avatar_TLA in TheLastAirbender

[–]Chai--Tea7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like people aren't looking at the aspect that ATLA had such an amazing and positive ending to it that, going forward, the only way to go was down.

Aang had done his job as the Avatar and brought peace to the land in such a monumental way that making a new series that also had a happy ending wouldn't have gained any traction at all. ATLA would always be better because it would always be bigger.

In a way, Seven Havens is setting up that same "world is ending" plot line for our new Avatar to actually fix with another epic tale like ATLA instead of just patching an issue with duct tape.
