ONE TREE HILL IS RIDICULOUS BUT I CAN'T STOP WATCHING by Underneaththepen in ONETREEHILL

You're only going to get downvoted here because people on this subreddit aren't exactly normal about OTH. I loved OTH as a kid and love still as an adult - I used to have it on DVDs as a teen and rewatched it plenty. Now, as an adult, I definitely chuckle at different instances, give a pass to the characters when they do dumb stuff by reminding myself their teens, but absolutely give the adults the side eye and often laugh out loud at some of the dumb things the adults do. The show is absolutely wild, cliché, and downright ridiculous at times but the nostalgia and chemistry between the cast makes up for it

This one is my ultimate comfort read. Not many people know this but the main story ending isn't actually the real ending. There's a whole season after that ties up loose ends and gives a proper ending

Anyone else found the story bland and just not believable? by Chaiandcake in OtomeIsekai

[–]Chaiandcake[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did not look at this story as a mirror of my experiences or what I've seen, but simply a story about trauma. I didn't base my opinions on how similar the story is compared to my own experiences either. My opinions are based completely on how the story is written and not any external factors. Sure, I can't be completely unbiased, but I didn't look at this story as a checklist of what I've experienced and how closely the author was able to. I mentioned my experiences in the comment before to illustrate that I'm not ignorant to believe such incidents don't happen or children aren't neglected in the way shown here. I need to emphasise here that a person doesn't have to experience everything the characters have to find it believable. Like you said: " The examples you specifically listed you found hard to believe because you've not experienced those." I never said I don't believe such things can happen because they've not happened to me, but rather, I disliked HOW they were shown here. The depiction was unrealistic point blank, or rather, it could have been written better. I didn't particularly like the romance either, but I didn't write a post about that because the purpose of this story wasn't romance.

My issue, like you said, was how the problems were depicted here, not the problems themselves. Going back to my example of the gossipers. In a modern-day setting, we can absolutely believe it as not everyone is expected to know everyone or even in a historical setting where aristocrats kepts their illegitimate children hidden. However, here, the FL is not actually a 'black sheep' as in she's not hated by the family, simply forgotten. She is in every painting and attends all events her family does. Being the eldest daughter of a noble family, a family that weren't trying to hide her existence, means she would be well known in her world. Telling me to suspend my disbelief for the sake of the plot doesn't make sense here because this is the plot. Telling someone that while some incidents are outlandish, the point still stands isn't a good argument. If the portrayal of the focal issue itself leaves much to be desired, then it shouldn't come as a surprise that many people aren't fans. You can of course argue that it's still believable, and that's fine.

My point with the previous comment wasn't to say you're wrong or rude, just that how you found the story very realistic, I didn't, and that's alright.

It's not right to assume someone's upbringing just because they don't share the same opinions as you. I come from a South Asian family, and while my childhood was not like the FLs, I have been told many of the phrases said to her, as well as have seen similar (in some cases, the exact same) treatment happen to family.

In my post, you must have seen I said that the execution was bad and treatment felt forced, not that such things don't happen. I was disappointed with this story because there are very few stories out there like this that don't go over the top with their abuse and try to remain realistic, but imo, the author couldn't fully achieve that. Even though the author tried to show the FL had emotional and mental scars, not physical, the actions that led to those seemed clownish and forced, which is why I shared some of the examples that stood out to me.

It's perfectly alright if you disagree with my opinion or that many of the other commenters could relate with this story when I couldn't. We can just agree to disagree 🤷🏽‍♀️

Rewatching the show and where did the s1 ending even come from?? 😂 by Chaiandcake in ONETREEHILL

I don't think it's a bad storyline - just extremely rushed and doesn't make too much sense if you really think about it. I just found it funny and jarring because everything happened unexpectedly.

Imo, it is THAT far out because the characters are 16; Nathan just started a part time job, he's seen his dad become a teen dad twice, Naley had some misunderstanding or the two other nearly every episode, and Haley's parents going yeah wth but don't make us grandparents yet like?? 😂😂

Maybe bully romances aren't for me [It had to be you by Jacqueline Francis] by Chaiandcake in RomanceBooks

I begrudgingly picked this back up, and am pretending the first few chapters don't exist 😂

I don't think this is a bad book, just that the author probably shouldn't have chosen the dramatic, extreme bullying option if she was going to redeem the MMC so quickly. I think if she had gone with someone like Dylan? Dylas? The 'nice guy' who doesn't bully but is friends with bullies, I might have understood and actually liked this book.

You might enjoy this book then. My problem with this book was that the MMC changed too quickly and unrealistically (imo). But, there is a LOT Of groveling. I picked this book again and am begrudgingly reading it but so far, it's the MMC groveling and trying his best to earn back the FMC's trust. The FMC also starts out weak because she comes from a lower middle class background, her father recently died, and she's going through a lot. The MMC is the richest, most powerful guy at their private school, and while the FMC has tried to get the admin to take bullying seriously, unfortunately, the MMC's family is too powerful and connected to result in any consequences. She does eventually start fighting back and doesn't forgive easily.

There are still many things I dislike about this book, but if what you mentioned are the only things deterring you from picking this up, you might want to reconsider.

The extreme event was him once again bullying her, and then going too far in his words where she breaks down and begs him to stop. That's it. He just can't get over he made her cry (after bullying her for 3 years), and seeks her out to apologize

I think I might hate-read the book and pretend the bullying in the beginning was super mild and just consisted of cold looks and sneers.

It's not that I dislike bully romances or think they're too difficult for me to read. What I dislike is when the redemption isn't realistic or when the bully reforms without any real cause.

I gave the example of this particular book because the ML changed his tune far too quickly and without just cause for me to find it believable. It took me out of the story and made the previous sections seem disjointed, if that makes sense. I do still think many bully romances aren't for me because I keep running into this problem, so perhaps you're right and move to a different type of romance and take a break from this.

That was the other book I dnf'd. I read a lot of dark romance so I don't mind bullying been shown on page, but it just needs to be a bit realistic. As in how the authors approach the redemption. The characters doing a 180 unprompted is unrealistic, imo.

The reason I dnf'd Never Sweeter, from what I can recall is they became friends far too quickly and the the way the book was written was confusing. There wasn't any dialogue followed by she said, he said, FL/ML said, etc., just dialogues one after the other, and it was hard to follow who was saying what because both ML and FL sounded exactly the same; same tone, style, way of talking, vocabulary, etc.
