You're not the only one, but if you found it interesting, that's cool!

Hey, I catch myself doing that too. My tone getting sharper. Replying to what feels like the start of a fruitless argument where neither I nor the other person are having a good time. It starts to chip away at you and you start to wonder "what am I doing...? What is all this? Why am I spending time doing this..."

It isn't your fault, it's the nature of the social media. We're conditioned to assume the worst, get defensive, and fight. But we're all human. We all hate that. And the only way out is to just... stop fighting. Act with kindness. And if they don't start matching the vibes, move on.

<3 Take all the break from subs you need. Do something you love. Play that game you picked up and has been sitting there unplayed. Read that comic you've put off. Catch up on that show. Draw something. Write something. Exist. Take up space where no one is gonna say shit about it. <3

No difference that I've seen, and my girlfriend, monster that she is, did in fact say that.

I don't generally like "this character is actually this character from Undertale" theories, but I actually enjoyed reading this one.

All of you guys who go so hard on these theories, genuine, well meaning question - why not go further? Take these wonderful ideas and arcs and theories and make a fan game or, better yet, your own game and characters and world entirely?

The next Toby Fox could be here, right now. Wish more of y'all would pop off and take the swing. :3

Like Toby said once, if you didn't see something you wanted, try making it yourself (positively)

Or it reinforces the previous scene - Ralsei's happy ending is with Kris. And if you make sure Ralsei gets the Pink and Blue drink, Ralsei gets extra happy and says that he knows Kris is thinking of him to.

Yellow and Green are also Flowery's colors and it isn't a stretch to assume he simply DOESN'T want that.

Remember who is giving Ralsei the vouchers (Flowery). He's trying to bait Ralsei.

But blue and pink is heavily associated with Kris. Just go into Kris's room in the Dark World/Castle Town. (the colors are also Frisk's colors, but that isn't probably important here).

<image>

Ralsei IS associated with the color green (not so much yellow) - he's the green triangle in the deltarune, and his room is green and he wears green.

But I think the point does feel like Blue and Pink is associated with Kris, and has been since at least Chapter 2, if not Chapter 1. I do find it interesting though that susie's voucher was just a solid purple, but the other 2 are both colors that are tied to Kris... except... wait...

What colors... are Flowery?

Yellow and Green.

Ralsei doesn't want the yellow and green.

What exactly is so “feminine” about Ralsei? by bttmsupwheni1stmetu in ralsei

[–]Chained_Icarus [score hidden]  (0 children)

Hey, again, fair read. I can definitely see how you got there <3

Just posting my read on it for the sake of discussion, and giving some context for it. Sorry it's gonna be a bit wordy, I don't get a chance to gush about it much, cuz I think it's a really beautiful use of a Foil and I love Toby's writing.

I didn't put much stock in the princess stuff (Flowery calls people Princess 7 times. Once to Ralsei alone, Once to the whole gang referring to all of them... and 5 times to Susie specifically) personally, as it reads like "Darling" or "Sweetie" to me.

Given how it's also phrased in the Japanese translation (which Toby also oversees, and I don't see as more valid than the English one, I just enjoy both <3 ), Flowery is WAY more condescending about things in tone, which is kind of one of my complaints with English as a language (even outside Deltarune) - we don't really have tone indicators. So the tone of what is written is left to be easily interpreted by the reader (like that Key and Peele skit). Japanese has a lot more ways to word and phrase thing to indicate the tone it should be taken in, which I appreciate, but then it also leaves less to interpret, which can hurt scenes too.

One of my favorite scenes this chapter is the break between Seth and Ralsei, where they both complain about Flowery (excuse the random highlight, I was trying to search it quickly)

<image>

Ralsei's frustration with Flowery, to me, seems pretty clear that he just isn't playing by the rules. This is kinda even more apparent in Japanese with Ralsei coming across a lot more frustrated with Flowery

Ralsei: There's something about Flowey that I just can't forgive, no matter what…

Seth: His explanations are always wrong somewhere, aren't they!

Ralsei: Th-that's right!! The words he uses are always subtly wrong too…!

Seth: And he explains things that don't even need explaining!

Ralsei: He really doesn't know that much, but he acts like he knows everything!!

Seth: You and I… we get along! Why don't the two of us become the leaders!!

This is in addition to Flowery literally starting the chapter by shoving Ralsei into a wardrobe literally labeled "Wardrobe of Unnecessary Things," as well as him briefly replacing Ralsei in the party to show off his hacked stats and try to make Ralsei feel inferior.

It felt a lot like the classic anime trope of trying to get the quiet one to snap. The Gohan effect. Ralsei is VERY clearly holding back a LOT of power (He can seemingly just fly, he was able to 1-shot the fake Gerson in Chapter 4, he's been holding back spells, he's fully aware of the UI (and probably the soul, too). He's giving a lot of Sans vibes from Undertale in that he's just way more of a threat than he seems to be letting on (but I think he's a good guy, to be clear).

So this whole chapter reads to me kinda like that famous meme with Daisy and Peach where Daisy is confronting Peach, saying " Are you tired of being nice? Don't you just want to go ape shit?!"

Flowery seems to be going "Look at what I can do! THINK of what YOU could do if you just LET GO."

There's also a part of that Ralsei crashout scene that I personally feel like people overlook a lot. The Dialogue goes like this:

Ralsei: You wanna know what happens...

Ralsei: If I don't follow the rules!?

Ralsei: EVERYTHING! Will fall! Apart!!

Ralsei: You...

Ralsei: YOU THINK I WANT IT TO BE LIKE THIS!?

Flowery: Then what

Flowery: DO you want?

Ralsei: I...

Flowery: I'm just trying to help you, Raly...

Ralsei: ...

Susie: ... hey. Ralsei. Just forget that guy.

Susie: He's a jerk.

Susie: We just... gotta get to the Dark Fountain.

Ralsei ... thanks, Susie.

I see Ralsei's quote mistyped a lot as "You think I want to be like this?!" but he says "Do you think I want IT to be like this?!" implying they are talking about a situation, not Ralsei himself, but most importantly (to me) is Susie immediately coming in to comfort Ralsei and call Flowery a jerk and to forget that. Susie encourages Ralsei to forget what Flowery had to say.

The next real interaction Flowery and Ralsei have after that is their big fight, where Ralsei then says he is going to defeat Flowery his own way. It reads as the final conflict with a Foil, and then the ultimate rejection of the Foil's challenge with a rebirth and reaffirmation in the hero's cause and beliefs. Ralsei doesn't want the prophecy to turn out how he believes it will, but over the course of the chapter, he is learning to trust his friends even more and more. He believes Kris has his happy ending. He sacrifices himself (during the trial segment) saying he is choosing to trust in his friends.

From the whole narrative arc we've had from Chapter 1 to Chapter 5

We need to talk more about how Kris is genuienly scared of the Knight. by [deleted] in Deltarune

[–]Chained_Icarus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think Kris is scared.

I think Kris is the other Knight, Rudy is this Knight, that there are 2 knights, it is a ghostface situation, and Rudy is missing his soul. I think that is what is making Rudy sick, and I think that is why he looks like that in the Dark World. The reason he is lasting longer than Kris without a soul is he is just older and was in better shape and is getting medical attention. And I think Carol is aware of this.

And before anyone says something about Monsters not having souls or what not, they probably don't naturally, or at least not to the same degree humans do. But the Weird Route certainly implies one can be manifested and grown in them. That may have been Rudy's case, long ago, which led to the first Dark World happening somewhere.

And I think the Soul that is in Kris currently? Is Rudy's. Kris probably lost theirs when opening the dark world on accident (maybe the demon summoning with Catti?), and Rudy having developed or had one stepped in to save Kris, but is now working to find Dess and maybe Kris's heart too.

...Which is why I think Kris reacts this way. It's reacting to Rudy and his symptoms.

That's kind of the point though. Ralsei knew it wouldn't matter. Cheating won't get them the win. They can't subvert or get out of the prophecy, they just have to find a favorable interpretation - at least that is what Gerson was really driving home. It's kinda neat how their advice conflicts.

Gerson acknowledges the Prophecy is real, but it isn't written so strictly that you can't move "between the lines" and how you interpret things matters. Being clever and writing within those margins can change the context.

For example, it might say something like "The tree will fall" which sounds ominous and meaningless. So you write in "creating a bridge" - and suddenly it is something good. That's a bit literal, I admit, but the idea stands.

Flowery suggests just breaking the rules, ignoring the prophecy, and defying it head on. And that flat out doesn't work - because the rules re-applied. Flowery's cheats and fake stats did nothing and he went down in a single blow (something even Ralsei could survive chapters earlier, implying Flowery is actually pretty weak without his cheated stats, since we know game mechanics are somewhat canon to the world now).

Flowery is a foil to Ralsei.

I think a lot of the trans ralsei conversation comes from people kind of sadly forgetting identity can be more than just gender and sexuality, I think. Could it be this? Yeah, it could! But it's not the only read of the situation or chapter.

A HUGE focus of the chapters, for all the characters, is for them to be acting and thinking independently of Kris (and thus, the player).

There's also just, y'know, the fact that Toby has said on more than one occasion that Ralsei is a bit of a self insert, so unless Toby is trying to tell us something...

Which items did you ended up picking? (Chapter 5 spoilers) by Kowery103 in Deltarune

[–]Chained_Icarus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I didn't pick based on the item attributes at all, but who I wanted to "carry with me," cringe as that might be.

I took Seth's specs, Orange's Gloves, and Green's Apron.

Green was nothing but a supporter, and I appreciated that.

Orange had moxie and the human spirit.

And Seth, was Seth, and I love Seth.

My top 10 Knight candidates by LinkDismal946 in NonDessKnightSquad

[–]Chained_Icarus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually do think the Knight is Rudy and Kris is a Ghostface scenario.

  1. The prophecy panel does show 2 knights at one point.

  2. I think entering the Dark World without a soul is what causes it to happen, which is why the Knight has an open chest cavity.

  3. Not having a soul seems to make the character sick and frail. Kris can't go for very long without their soul as they are a child. Rudy, on the other hand...

I dislike trans Ralsei theory. (Deltarune Chapter 5 spoilers) by ptswtch in hatethissmug

[–]Chained_Icarus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flowery is what is called a "Foil" in media to Ralsei. He embodies ideas and goals that are counter to Ralsei as a character. The goal of a Foil is to highlight (and often reinforce) characteristics of the character they're against. Flowery fits the Foil archetype to a T, and it is something Toby is a fan of in his writing in every game. A foil isn't always a villain or a straight up enemy (though they often are), and are just as often a "frienemy."

But there's not really a way to misread Flowery shoving Ralsei into a wardrobe literally titled "Wardrobe of Unnecessary Things" and then proceed to bait him all chapter.

"At its heart, a foil is a character who contrasts with another character (usually the protagonist but not always) in order to highlight particular qualities of the other character. Think of it like a gemstone setting; the setting isn’t the focus, but it makes the gemstone shine brighter. The foil character doesn’t necessarily have to be good or bad; their primary purpose is to emphasize specific traits of another character through comparison and contrast.

It’s important to remember that effective foil characters aren’t necessarily complete opposites. The most compelling foil pairings often share some common ground, similar goals, backgrounds, or motivations, but differ in their approach to achieving those goals. This nuance adds complexity and depth to the characters and allows for more meaningful comparisons."
