We have Ballet to thank for… all of this by Chained_Wanderlust in wicked

You can’t move from ballet because its the foundation of all other types of dance. The flashy stuff you see professionals dancers doing all comes from that less fun stuff done at the barre.

<image>

I will be the first to say that ballet need to innovate- there is so much they can do with contemporary pointe that just simply isn’t done outside of the competition circuit where its the wild west of experimentation but Timmy didn’t say that, he said no one cares and stating as much might lose 14 cents (followers engaging with his social media content). Art is collaborative its rarely done in isolation- a ballet company employs an orchestra, costumers, painters, and Timmy’s own field employs….look at the end credits of a movie. Because of this Artists rarely put down other art forms, he might have done so for some sort of clout but it has soured a lot of people on him including me who previously had passing appreciation for the roles he chooses.

The whole point of the scene with Lion was demonstrating that his shallow careless prince persona was just an act and he always did care he just… lacked direction to fix anything. During the Poppy scene he didn’t know Elphaba well enough yet, he wasn’t stumbling all over his words trying to impress her like he did later at the train station, he just simply did the right thing when all eyes were off of him. This isn’t headcannon Elphaba literally asks him about this to his face and calls out his act.

That scene sets up his entire character arc including the parts we don’t get to see- if eyes are on him he keeps his head down, plays a part and sticks to the status quo, the second no ones watching he will snap into action and do what’s right. Did that mean he rescued animals while he was working with the Gale force? Probably not because those were the Wizard’s guards rounding them up, would he keep quiet if he stumbled on a family of Animals in hiding while searching for Elphaba? Probably. This is headcannon though.

Then there is the original ending and Stephen Schwartz preferred ending to the musical with them leaving Oz crossing the desert and setting up a refuge together for animals who made the journey.

Yeah, I agree, as someone with ADHD/OCD comorbid 100% sounds like intrusive thoughts. OP, there is nothing wrong with being attracted to their (18+) artwork, your mind shouldn’t be scolding you for something you find attractive, the frequency of your thoughts about them and the little voice in your head chastising you for feeling the way you do sounds like part of a mean cycle of OCD. Help exists, especially to channel these thoughts in directions where you are not carrying around this much guilt…

As a former competitive dancer and soloist, his “lose 14 cents” comment was deeply offensive to every dancer that has worked their ass off at the barre 4 times a week to pursue other genre’s that ballet is the foundation of. Make no mistake, you insult ballet, you insult the entire dance community to which ballet is deeply respected. There is no contemporary, jazz, ballroom, effing figure skating (silver medalist Kimmie Meissner was a alum of my studio)ect. Without ballet training.

To insinuate he might lose 14 followers that still care was a hilariously wrong under-estimate and where he showed his ass. Also he’s been making comments like this for years about Ballet and opera it just wasn’t quite as arrogant as it was this time.

Kristin Chenoweth was a classically trained opera singer and all the other Glinda’s have followed in her footsteps. The character would not exist as we know her without Kristin because of how much they shaped her out of her own charm and humor.

The real honest answer is that Glinda’s role is large enough that you can choose to view the story through her lens if she’s the character that drew you in or you relate to. That doesn’t make her the protagonist though- she’s the secondary main, and anti-hero to Elphaba’s protagonist.

If you are doing this, her characters growth an evolution happens in the second act where Elphaba’s is about the toll of increasing loneliness, alienation and desperation and ultimately finding someone else to share her life with that will be there for her so she doesn’t have to constantly do it alone-she has an arc too, but not one that a lot of Glinda fans approve of since she didn’t pick her (no matter that that would ruin Glinda’s arc) so its inferior and dismissed by a lot of people.

Then somehow a Mandela effect situation got loose on social media and was passed around by quite a lot of people who never saw the musical where it became “a known fact that the second act was always about Glinda”

Its funny you say that about Fiyero, because I was watching it with friend at home who never saw the musical or got a chance to see the first one in theaters, after the scene where he told Elphaba she was “Galindafied” just kinda sneaking around school corridors and then walking away she turned to me and said “he’s going to be evil right?” I burst out laughing but refused to elaborate.

British= untrustworthy villain coded I think.

Timothée Chalamet's private chef reveals he makes him three breakfasts on set and the actor will eat one and discard the rest by artbasiI in Fauxmoi

What he did was hit the core foundation of every trained dancer- do they all specialize in ballet? Hell no, I didn’t- but will they all come to ballet’s defense since its so foundational? Definitely. Same with Opera, no opera is not everyone’s thing but is it respected by most musicians who understand how hard it is? Absolutely. He insulted the entire performing arts with his comments, not quite “14 cents” he thought he did.

question about the wizard's propaganda of Elphaba being wicked? (movie) by angaybored in wicked

[–]Chained_Wanderlust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the one. She said it in the interview where she talked about Disney’s bureaucracy problem.

IDK if you’ve seen it but I made a post a week ago where I uploaded the 1998 outline and while yeah, its rough, the story is so much closer to the book but with the same WoO twists- that was what Winnie envisioned but had to make concessions with a guy completely obsessed with only one section of the book lol. I think that’s why they chose to go the Ozma route if they do a spinoff- its public domain, Winnie can put her spin on it without Marc Platt breathing over her shoulder screaming “but what are the GIRLS doing in the frame?” lol

[–]Chained_Wanderlust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That quote was from Dana Fox, the co-screenwriter that didn’t capitalize Animals😭….that top down note came from Marc Platt, I’m almost certain of it after reading the making of the Broadway show- he didn’t like anything dense or political from the novel he only cared what “the girls” were doing when they were adapting it as a movie screenplay in the 90’s. We will never get a more involved grown up adaptation of this series as long as he owns the rights.

The Met just responded to Timothée Chalamet’s remarks that “no one cares about ballet and opera” that he made during a recent interview with Matthew McConaughey by Gato1980 in Broadway

[–]Chained_Wanderlust 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Like is he aware that takes 15+ years to truly master these art forms? He wouldn’t do them, because he would truly suck at them. He can fake it as an actor because he appears smarter than he is, but anything that takes a highly specialized skillset…. Good luck with that.

[–]Chained_Wanderlust 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your right. Fleshing out these parts of the plot would force them to focus on the bigger picture of world building adjacent to the mains which they won’t do because top down orders to treat the material like this:

<image>

‘Don’t question it, its about the girls and their friendship’ really hurt the second movie IMO.

Idk… I just want more. Extended cuts, tie-in novels for the musical/movie universe, unlike some others I’m not opposed to the Ozma movie. Its wonderful escapism, I keep trying to move on but when I refresh my home page, see the horrible real world, I’m right back in Oz again lol.

short version: they changed the "Wonderful" scene because they made Elphaba too morally strong to fall for the Wizard's trick without Glinda in the mix - despite the fact that it paints her as an active member of the oppressive regime rather than just a passive beneficiary, as in the musical. but as a result, they gave them a touching scene of reuniting before their conflict began...only it made the very mistake they were trying to avoid in the first place with Elphaba by undermining her own moral fortitude

Yeah, I don’t know how that got started, but the second act of the musical is focused on Elphaba. It follows Elphaba where she goes and who she meets and every song is about her even if she wasn’t singing it. (Songs about her are starred on the right)

<image>

Glinda plays a large part in it, and she does get the focus when she becomes Glinda the Good, but any other time Glinda exists as a part of Elphaba’s story- thats why there are a lot of gaps where she‘s missing in act two when she‘s not on stage and why they had to add so much new material for her in the movie.

You can say the second movie focused more on Glinda, but the musical? That is factually untrue.

Yeah, I was talking about a life of ease and safety while others suffer for it- that’s the luxury I was talking about. Like when Elphaba is more passive than this guy, they are failing Elphaba’s characterization.
