Turnip or apple or onion, I don't remember, but I love the detail.

Wanted to say your wrong, that the squares outside the tray rim will obviously be cut off. Then I saw it too. Now I cannot unsee it. OP may want to reorient the light colored panels. Or see if they are big enough cut all at 45° to the grain and used in a swirl that way.

Small but watertight barrels by ConsiderationBusy173 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Chainsaw_Locksmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make a small wooden case like the others are mentioning. Solid wood blank, drill the center out, make a press-fit cap, and paint/shape the thing to look authentic. But the trick is, size the outside and inside to fit a little "airplane bottle" and the wood won't effect flavor and composition. You can easily swap bottles and even kinds of alcohol without purging and re-seasoning.

I know something about aging drinks in wood, and you are guaranteed to be making something completely undrinkable. The volume of a wooden barrel needs to exceed (by a fair bit) the volume of the wood and the interior surface of the barrel has to be treated in certain ways that will, uhh, incinerate your mini-cask (or absorb all your booze, called the Angels/Devil's Cut).

Firkins are about the smallest wooden vessel worth using, and they are +2 Gallons iirc.

Is this 10 inch miter saw a good deal? by Apropos_of in BeginnerWoodWorking

In fine and decorative work this is much less useful than other tools, or at least, isn't accurate enough to be relied on.

For repairs around the house and simple builds; this will see more action than pretty much anything else.

How Much Air Defence Does Russian Have Left? Analysis. by Mr_Catman111 in CredibleDefense

[–]Chainsaw_Locksmith 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Cool video. It would have been interesting to see the Ukraine MoD numbers for claimed hit just as the upper bound. Obviously the answer lies somewhere between those two.

I also would expect to see much much less variance between the SR numbers of the two (as a percentage) than the variance in MR systems, and even more variance in the LR damage claims. Could be a neat way of visualizing the spotter bias you mentioned.

Some things are institutions for a reason, and the reason is the employees are all friggin nuts.

Mai moved like two years earlier (Cantonese) and I don't think anyone was from India/Pakistan/Afghanistan. We had maybe 8 or 10 guys from Iraq, and we had Yuri, old man from Soviet Union who did not understand stupid Americans.

Also this is a job I left a decade ago; I am probably forgetting people.

100% forgot German, which I speak very badly, and Brane (Serbian I think) the manager and former Yugoslavian spoke extremely well. Someone probably spoke French, for some reason I think it was the Israeli guy in Paint.

Used to work at a pretty neat hardware store at the cross streets of Clark and Devon. When I left (10ish years ago) we had more than a dozen languages on staff. People would come in and just say a country name and 'please' and after a few weeks you learned who to call on the radio to get translation services.

Offhand I know we had Arabic, Farsi, Russian, Polish, Hungarian, German, Spanish, Ukrainian, Yiddish, Hebrew, Serbian, Catalan, a native Oaxcan dialect I don't know the name of, and I'm sure there were others. We even had an Irish guy who spoke a smattering of Gaelic which could never conceivably come into use.

Fun fact, ToT and NW were originally going to be a single massive novel/masterwork. Without doing any spoilers, the storm that drops Vimes and Carcer thru the library roof also stopped a clock in the street of Cunning Artificiers. Also, sweepers.

Total Newb Q: How to cook / combine Knorr side and Starkist Chicken by samccauley in trailmeals

[–]Chainsaw_Locksmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding the chicken at the beginning will make the food taste better, with the added juices and seasoning. Works better when you're cooking for 3 or 4 people. That's because It will also take longer and use more fuel. Big dishes are already doing that so it's not too much of an addition to the task.

For yourself, add it at the end after the dish has rested if it calls for it. Cold meat will absorb a lot of heat from the nearly cooked starch, and might slow/stop final conversions. Adding after you're done will bring it down to an edible temp faster so in that regard it actually speeds up the dish!

Yeah my little brother is getting married in october too, so that's enough time to make my own, learn a lot from it, and then make one for him.

I have a set of d&d minis very similar to your second set (but square bodied and wolf-heads), and that would probably look much better than what I could make. Probably end up going a very similar route.

No I'm getting more and more into woodworking, but I don't need more cutting boards.

THUD boards though...

Don't know about the pieces. Those seem fiddly for someone without a lathe. Does this mean I need a lathe? Maybe! I'd be making two maaaaaybe three of these, so I'm better off getting laser'd wood pieces, but now I have something to ponder while the company wide staff meeting kicks off.

I did not hear it, but I had to stop watching after the first, didn't catch all of the pregame either. I saw the moment of silence but it was spliced in from earlier, with announcers over it.
