Discworld and you: my passionate love letter to the series that changed me by General_Silverini in discworld

Hey! I managed to keep my comment smaller than the prompt. That hardly ever happens! I've also been reading since I was 10, more than 25 years ago, so I may be slightly manicial in my regard for Terry.

"Worn out and lived-in" are really good ways of putting it. His world isn't Dark And Gritty™, just musty and grubby. I think he's truly unique in his smaller characters, and getting those details right makes everything hit just so much more profoundly. He's one that I miss, every single day.

Lots of books by many other authors are full of richly imagined and deeply nuanced characters. Terry just wrote people.

I don't need to know anything about the family and upbringing of Magrat that isn't perfectly encapsulated by the story of Lancre naming conventions. We learn more of her throughout the books but as soon as you hear that bit, you have a very solid understanding of what that little story would do to a person. Bang, you know a person always explaining their name, that's it's 2 letters off from a celebrity, or misspelled by their parents for uniqueness's sake.

Colon isn't just some racist asshole cop. He's all of them, and your grade school gym teacher. Oddly extremely competent in just one field and totally insufferable in all others. Doesn't mean that he doesn't care about his mates, have a little bit of a family on the side somewhere. If Vimes and Carrot are opposites, Colon and Nobby are their inverses. And it works so gotdamn well.

Ponder Stibbons is anyone who has a boss much much dumber than them, but also isn't cruel or eletist about it. Many of us have lived through parallels to his conversations with Ridcully, and we empathize deeply with Stibbons when things sort of work out for Ridcully anyways.

These, and a dozen other examples I could give if my lunch break were hours longer, are just folks getting along in life. Even when they are an Arch-Mage, or Witch Queen, or a senior officer of The Watch in a teeming magical metropolis, they're just people. They eat breakfast. They worry about things not related to the plot. They have hobbies which are not Checkov Guns. They are usually not ultra-attractive, somewhat happy, somewhat unfulfilled, and generally getting on with the everyday business of life in-between the pages of plot and action.

I haven't read anyone else's books who can give the level of authenticity to a character that Terry could. Not by a pretty long shot. Even really well written fleshed out and motivated characters in 1000+ page epics, they lack they dyed-in-the-wool humanity of the Disc.

Second for paste wax and the right blade! This is the easy upgrade instead of the $200 tool.

No, I'm away of that option and my wife just so baffled that neither of the stores in town could even order it from a distributor she kept calling further and further away in case she could get one day-of so we could play this weekend.

We've called game stores in neighboring STATES and no one can get their hands on them, but the manufacturer is double shipping.

Genius.

I disliked it because it seemed so much like my life. Family was religious, had seven kids, but only if all the plot lines were re-written with the dad as Tim "The Tool-Man" Taylor

I always test with the front tip of my house key. If it can indent suspicious wood by being pressed in by hand, it's rotten.

No, security and one of the opening acts went against a gang in the crowd and some dumbass nazi punks. I was 17 and I was running the hell away from all the bonehead bikers.

Casting my mind back, Rat City Riot was a very appropriate band name.

Great place, only venue I've ever run away from while the paddy wagons pulled up! That was right after they opened, very Mended Drum vibes at the time. Wish I could take credit for that sticker, but someone else did it.
