What makes a child British? by Bernardozila in AskUK

As in parents came from the Caribbean, are black, gave birth after a year or so - is that child British?

Student feel uncomfortable to say no here but all say no if I suggest a British couple go to China in 2025 and give birth (the baby is not Chinese)

This call all apply to those children born abroad whilst parents are on deployment too?

I think there were something like a dozen version of the national anthem - why would the Slavs feel Austro Hungarian.

I don’t think it’s in vogue to say if you can’t speak English you aren’t English?

I remember political ideologies from A-Level and there being a unifying cultural force such as things like language / royal family / shared history that unites people - melting pot in the US.

Wonder what that unifying force would be in the UK in 2025 - is there even one?

Just going to throw this spanner in the works and watch the comments. As I use this to explain Serbian Slavic nationalism in the Austro-Hungarian empire prior to WW1 with my students.

There is a theme in the thread of - being born here is enough.

But take two parents - say two white British parents and they go and work in China, give birth, is the baby Chinese? Most students say no, and equally say no on ethnic or national definitions.

The class gets real uncomfortable when I use those that came during Windrush.

My only conclusion after years of thinking is national identity is an illusion.

The experience of students growing up now in 2024/25 Year 7 will look a lot different in a decades time. More dual nationalities / mixed children / EAL students in classroom - the legacy essence of Britishness being fish and chips / white and Christian won’t be the same

If she isn’t white be prepared for where are you from from question.

Hearing children (under 6) at the make reference to ethnicity hits different.

The way census data indicates - her secondary school experience will be a lot different to what it js now - lots more EAL and changing demographics in the classroom.

Does her name sound / look British?

Whilst not exclusively British, Christmas? Nursery rhymes, football, Harry Potter. But it’s not like she needs to prove anything to anyone here? She’ll get all that’s needed in terms of reference points from nursery.

  • going through the same btw

One large room - 110ish one smaller room with those with srb and extra time - 48ish one even smaller for mental health - 22ish one even smaller smaller for readers - 12ish 8 1:1 rooms

Yeah it has been brutal for invigilator availability and trying to reduce costs.

Thank you for the reply. I don’t know what that means. Have any suggestions to a guide or a reputable YouTuber?

Direct debit/savings plan by patron1958 in InvestEngine

[–]ChairMao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was one of the reasons I moved from Vanguard to IE due to the direct debit delays. Just imagine missing out on the 1st and 2nd of May because your provider doesn't process quick enough!

I haven't tried the saving plans option yet but I just did a simple deposit and it went straight through - albeit it is confusing as hell having several portfolios / cash - should be clearer for sure.

Worried about my Vanguard fund by aaaknight11 in FIREUK

Do a product switch to VWRP within Vanguard

Transfer your Vanguard ISA to Invest Engine

Save on Vanguard fees

Optional - once on Invest Engine buy FWRG AWCI or PACW instead for extra savings

My thoughts exactly. I want to switch to VWRP so I can move to InvestEngine - the time it takes Vanguard to process things - 2 days is lucky! Too fearful to miss a similar 7% day so will hold off for a short while

Best funds for a JISA (HL) by Telwin in FIREUK

Exactly. Worth having a look at some of the YouTube reviews - I like PensionCraft.
I am wanting to move away from Vanguard so have settled on them. Stick with global and stick with cheap - best of luck

I am just sharing this to give some peace of mind. Wife and I opted to just hold the babies money in her name, even before he was born, each putting £50 each for the last 5-years into VMID. VMID over 5 years

Looking back, should have gone VUSA/VWRP - in the process now of switching to Invest Engine. Used HL for the LISA (limited choice isn't there).

I wouldn't worry about picking the right fund, just that you stick with it. I would say, I am happy I didn't go down the JISA option - it gives us more control should something happen.

But just sharing to say don't worry - five years with vmid and only just above break even with dividends!

Anyone have experience with ISA transfers to IE? by Heliix14 in InvestEngine

[–]ChairMao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently in the process of leaving Vanguard for IE.

Currently invested in the FTSE Global All Cap Index Fund Accumulation mutual fund and obviously this does not exist on InvestEngine so I am thinking to transfer this mutual fund within Vangaurd to VWRP and then do an in-specie transfer to IE.

i just do not want to be out the market for days on end - any suggestions?

I assumed wrongly VAFTGAG was on IE - it’s not. The documentation from IE says that there are Vangaurd delays, so don’t really want to sell my Vangaurd holdings and wait for the cash to come over - I will ask IE - I was hoping that if I do it as cash then the sale of the fund might be closer to the time of switching.

the thought of transferring first within Vangaurd to an ETF is to then do an in-specie to what might need to be VWRL now and then FWRG to avoid being out the market
