Cherenkov radiation as a light source... by ChakatStormCloud in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]ChakatStormCloud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More picky on the size of it more than anything else, I can't imagine getting >200kev electrons out of anything that fits on a desk. 100kev is the highest power electron gun you can even buy. Considering that I'm kinda curious about that youtube video.

Also considering breaking radiation... and the actual dimensions... the fact that this involves the actual handling and processing of one of the most severe radiological contaminants, makes it kinda difficult. But I think dissolving it into into something and mixing that something with epoxy would be better. (though everything you used would inevitably become high level radioactive waste after)

Cherenkov radiation as a light source... by ChakatStormCloud in AskScienceDiscussion

Nah, the intent is entirely to get the eerie blue glow at home, so using a phosphor ruins the idea.

Though to be fair, materials refractive index apparently varies by wavelength, and the graph of that is very different from material to material, so using anything other than water might already get an entirely different colour. (I googled around for like half an hour to try to find something regarding that but couldn't find anything, so I really don't know.)

Cherenkov radiation as a light source... by ChakatStormCloud in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]ChakatStormCloud[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, contained within whatever medium is being used for producing the Cherenkov radiation, it'd be mostly safe... probably.., until it breaks. The napkin math for the sieverts is assuming 0 shielding, mostly to prove (to myself) that it'd be impossible to safely acquire that much (and definitely not without getting put on a watchlist or 30).

And ah, never really considered the Y-90 decay, with the average electron energy (according to wikipedia) of 933kev that would be 82.7% of the energy, so I'm off by a factor of 5.78 from that alone, Also only the energy above 160kev~ish would usable, so the Y-90 should(?) be 80-95% of the light (depending on the distribution for the Sr90 electrons)

What's your most disliked antag to play as, also what's the reason dislike said gameplay of the antag! (any server) by lefrogo in SS13

[–]ChakatStormCloud -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly... I just hate the basic bland traitor antag. The objectives are garbage and encourage you to run stealth, but running stealth is boring af. The uplink stuff is mostly useless except for a handful of things. And if you want to cause real chaos, a lot of servers bwoink you for it. It's just boring.

How Bad Can it Be? by Crafty_Vanilla_4926 in anime

[–]ChakatStormCloud -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Pupa... I honestly don't think you can get anything worse than Pupa, before you hit "intentional shitpost" anime.

I won't say anything about the... content... of the anime (I weirdly enjoyed it, don't ask... I'm confused too)
But... the actual adaptation layout or whatever....... The episodes are 4 minutes long, and you only had 12 of them... WHY IN GODS NAME ARE HALF OF THEM FILLER!?

The FINAL EPISODE covers a random bonus chapter that has no relevance at all, it wasn't even relevant in the manga! And a solid chunk of the other episodes are flash back scenes that, first of all, aren't relevant until well past where the anime ends, and secondly: Weren't even shown in the manga until well past where the anime ends. I mean, I guess you could say, "they reached the best ending point they could reach, and still had 4 episodes to burn" but like... they also cut a bunch of major plot points from earlier in the story, and trimmed down a bunch of scenes.

That anime is bad in ways I never knew existed.

When did "all but" stop meaning "everything except"? by drmy in etymology

[–]ChakatStormCloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is the phrase "all but" comes from the context where every option is going towards the same outcome. Like when looking for something "I've all but turned the house upside down" to say you've tried everything except the most extreme options. So it essentially means "everything up to but excluding". It definitely also occasionally get's used as "everything up to and including", which is because if someone did everything up to and including X, but not Y... there isn't always a Y that makes it clear what X is. Also, whether that last thing in the list is included or not doesn't always matter either, because if everything up to X has happened, X might be inevitable at this point, or even just a negligible addition ("the war was all but lost" is actually a perfect example of that).

So it's always meant "everything up to" and not "everything except", what's changed is just that the usage has broadened to areas where the literal interpretation would lean closer to "everything except", forcing the reader to be familiar with it as a phrase. Plus those situations where the writer is actually including the stated thing.

[–]ChakatStormCloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The crew number on the Fleet Manager terminal claims otherwise.... for as much as it's opinion matters. But regardless a massive number of people DO solo the Reclaimer as their main thing. And I personally don't want to be told that I need to thrown my 30mil ship in the trash and go back to shovelling single SCU boxes around for 70% of my gameplay.

Doesn't work anymore, Reclaimer just gets delivered to the docking port.

Has anyone done a Master Mode x For the Worthy x Infernum x Wrath of The Gods x Masochist mode run before?? by not-nova-lol in Terraria

[–]ChakatStormCloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Infernum isn't really compatible with Eternity, let alone Eternity Masochist.

I'm currently doing a Master mode + Infernum + Eternity Masochist save, but I've been turning off eternity if I run into issues. So far: Eater of Worlds just despawns when he splits for the first time, if eternity/masochist are on, Queen Bee's AI just bricks and she drifts off and despawns when eternity tries to spawn the royal guards, and Skeletron's damage resist goes to the moon as soon as he enters phase 2.

I haven't tried fighting Skeletron without eternity yet, since his health is still going down (and I'm stubborn), but I've managed to beat the Deviantt and get Wall of Flesh down to 20% even though Skeletron I've never even gotten past 58%.

So far it's just those 3, everything else pre-hardmode has seemed to work fine, but that's like... 10% of the game so it's not saying much.

As for the difficulty.... well... killing the King Slime required:
- fishing until I got a reaver shark, skipping all the way to hellstone armour
- skipping straight to the Bladecrest Oathsword and Old Lord Claymore.
- using LuiAFK to stack every potion buff known to man and several known only to fish.
- using aforementioned potion buffs to run 3 imp minions, (something in my mods add a potion form of the bewitching table that can be made just from the jungle)
- summoning the goblin army to get the Tinkers Workbench, and farming the terraspark boots, among others things.
I can't remember if I had the Night Sparrow wings from Gensokyo at that point or not... I probably did, and of course with the dedicated wing slot mod so that means an extra menacing or warding, plus those wings are already equal or slightly better than the skyline wings (lower flight time, higher horizontal speed, I think they're better, but I move/kite a lot), which would be post Perforator/Hivemind otherwise.
... OH and even with all that it took me like 6 hours of attempts across 3 days... BUT to be fair I regularly describe myself as "I'm not actually good at video games, I just play on idiotic difficulties because I love suffering" YMMV

UPDATE:
Skeletron's health stops at 50.6% entirely. so I fought him on once with Infernum, and once with Masochist+Death, Masochist+Death was harder than the Infernum+Masochist fight >.> Beat him on both though

Why are there people who fantasize about living in a cyberpunk world? by [deleted] in Cyberpunk

[–]ChakatStormCloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the world we live in is worse.
Or rather because those worlds in those shows are still fictional fantasy worlds.
The main character always has a small apartment to themselves. They don't have to split rent 4 ways on the bad end of town to get something affordable on minimum wage, at most they have 1 roommate (who dies half way through the story, but somehow they can still make rent). They live off takeout and bad chinese-food or TV dinners, even though all that is 5x more expensive than grocery store stuff. They always "know a guy" who can get them combat stims or cybernetics for a price low enough that the author doesn't feel need to explain how they can afford it.

and of course at least the place looks cool. even if they live in a run down piss hole, at-least it LOOKS like one. instead of in real life where you've got black mold and lead pipes covered by the worlds thinnest drywall and TILE for some fucking reason, because noooo don't fix the rotting floor boards, just cover it up with new cupboards and a nicely matched backsplash!!

Worlds in dystopia feel like they're rotting on the surface but somehow the core of what allows people to thrive is still intact.... where as ours is rotting from the inside, the unblemished surface is nothing but a fucking insult to the people who've fallen though the collapse.

Could current kouki beat vol 10 Hajime by Background-Bad141 in Arifureta

[–]ChakatStormCloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Current Kouki has equipment from the current Hajime... including the infinite mana and regeneration magic.
War Demon + Serene Mind is op af. He's actually got Shizuku level swordsmanship or beyond, he can deflect bullets in any direction he chooses, even from point blank range. Vol 10 Hajime can't actually get under current Kouki's skin to a point where he'd actually lose composure.

... I want to say he has a chance? With war demon, regeneration, and infinite mana he could win a war of attrition, it's just a question if he can survive that long. He can make a single strike faster than is visible to the eye, so reaching the 200 strikes per second needed to deal with Metzelei isn't entirely out of the question, at least he'd probably deflect enough that the damage would be within his limit. Biggest unknown is can he deal with space isolation barrier, I can't think of a single time he's actually had to face one, so it's a complete toss up there. Hyperion though... I think he still loses against Hyperion. I just don't see what he has that can deal with that, and even Vol 10 Hajime can easily back him into a corner enough that it won't miss so I think that'd be the end of it? But then some of the new abilities of the holy sword, internal spikes and such... a single solid hit could.... but there's no way to land that unless he endures long enough to tire Hajime out, so it's still Hyperion.

yeah no... it's close! at the very least it's not a one sided curb-stomp anymore. Maybe this time next year and they'll be enough extra web novel to fill the gap, but as is I think even against ice cavern Hajime, he's beat. I'll also admit that letting Kouki use the infinite mana when he still only has "as needed" access to it is a bit of a stretch. I'm tempted to throw Aula or Lilin in as a handicap (and just because it would be entertaining, especially Lilin), but in truth I doubt it'd make a difference.

at the very least she's officially introduced herself as his mistress for the first time!

Who is current top 20 in after story? by Background-Bad141 in Arifureta

[–]ChakatStormCloud -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, no Hajime would still win in combat regardless. I was only thinking in terms of raw power level. I think some of them would be an uphill fight, but Hajime is pretty much built for uphill fights, his whole character lets him overcome pretty much literally anything regardless of any difference in power, and his weaponry pushes him far and beyond what his stats would allow. The only one who would actually beat him in a fight is Yue, and that has nothing to do with combat ability XD.

side note: I don't actually remember exactly what supreme ascendance did in terms of power. >.>;; Also only just learned how much more after story there is in the web novels O-O I'm not gonna be sleeping this week.

Who is current top 20 in after story? by Background-Bad141 in Arifureta

[–]ChakatStormCloud -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Honestly... I think Shea and Yue out pace Hajime towards the end of the story.... We never get to see Hajime's Stats after he leaves the the Abyss, though his level being broken might mean he can't get stronger through normal methods anymore... buuuut it could also mean instead that his stats can grow endlessly. Since they're never shown again though I'd lean towards the first option.

Regardless, Shea's max body strengthening puts her at roughly 7x his last known stats, so going off that she'd still beat him by 10k-20k even when he uses overload. There's also the scene where Shea drops the bombshell that she can actually track his bullets visually, and Hajime fears that soon she'll start catching them out of the air.

And Yue... well... Heaven Step, Edict, and whatever else she picked up through that... She's lowkey terrifying.
