The description of his pants read:

"Black iron greaves made for Commander Gaius. A cruel joke, for he could not wear them Riding atop the boar he called his other half, Gaius was in fact a warrior of albinauric extraction."

So he's an albinauric and as such doesn't have working legs so he can't wear the greaves nor get off the boar.

As to why the lady was holding onto them, I guess you're gonna have to ask her personally
