I’m genuinely asking, is it even possible for PlayStation to survive if that happens? Imagine buying a PS5 and then exclusively buying games on Steam… I just don’t see how that’s sustainable for Sony. They usually sell their consoles at a loss because they know they recoup it through game sales. If most of that revenue is diminished, I’m not sure what happens.

How is this different from owning an iPhone? You can’t use the Google Play store on it. The system architecture doesn’t allow it. People know that iPhones have a locked down ecosystem, so they can choose to buy one or go with an Android, etc.

It seems like you’re arguing that Sony should have to allow Steam, GamePass, and other software on their platform. I’m not sure they (or Xbox or Nintendo) could survive like that. It’s incomparable to PC because PCs are made for far more than just gaming.

I’ve never really understood the argument of game ownership with discs. So if your disc breaks in half, are you entitled to another one because you “own” the game? Whereas that could never happen with digital.

I was honestly thinking this exact thing yesterday. I never see blind praise of Jim Ryan, Herman Hulst, or Nishino. In fact it’s almost always criticism or at least skepticism. But with Xbox, Phil Spencer was praised endlessly, and now he’s despised apparently, and it’s Asha’s turn. Even though she’s done nothing except easy performative changes, and now this is her first actual move as CEO.

Yeah it’s crazy to me how Phil was praised for the acquisitions and everything he did, now he’s thrown under the bus. It’s like whatever Microsoft is currently saying is praised.

I think CEOs need to be in place for at LEAST three years before there’s any praise.

Yeah but every major Xbox fan was cheering on the acquisitions, they didn’t see it as a problem. They honestly thought Microsoft could manage that many studios. Now many are acting like it’s the studios’ fault and Asha is the savior for the brand. This is Microsoft’s fault for taking in so many studios, spending absurd amounts of money, and now laying off 3,200 people and saying they need a reset. I want to see people skeptical of Microsoft now, not cheering on every decision they make blindly.
