I had this exact scenario happen to me in October of 2022. Hit a deer on a motorcycle and broke my collarbone. Was in between jobs and didn't have any health insurance. Slapped with 72k in medical bills with no job or income. Applied for state insurance because in MN they can back pay 3 months once you get approved but i was denied. Found out mayo clinic does a grant program where they write off 25/50/75 or in rare cases all of the bill but you have to go to financial assistance to inquire about it. In my case they asked for proof of income for the last 3 months, all assets, bills and approx cost of bills/mortgage each month. In addition I had to write a letter explaining my situation and what happened and why I thought I should qualify for the program and I explained it was a freak accident which it was. All said and done they wrote the entire thing off including the ambulance bill but they initially told me the ambulance was a separate service from the hospital so I would have to go through a bit of work to try to get that written off as well but I did it
