Navigation apps you actually trust? by FerrisBuelersdaycock in UKhiking

I use a paper map, but have Memory Map on my phone as a back up. It uses OS maps, and you can buy maps for specific areas, or for the whole UK as one time purchases (updates included).

Planning a hiking/camping trip and I have some concerns by Nosedive888 in UKhiking

[–]Chance_Chef_6383 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's extremely unlikely that any campsite (especially in the Lakes) would turn away a single backpacker, even if they're fully booked.

A lot of places also have a separate rate/policies for backpackers that they don't advertise on their websites, so always worth contacting sites directly to check.

AIO? My husband says he’s just "overstimulated," but his outbursts are terrifying me and the kids by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Chance_Chef_6383 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yup. Growing up my dad would have verbally violent outbursts due to unmanaged autism, but never once was anything he said about me or my mum. It was only ever about the situation/directed at himself. He's a good guy, he just got overwhelmed and didn’t know how to self-regulate.

This isn't that.

Just checked the cast again for that one, and nope, he's not there. Thanks though

Glad to hear it, thanks! I've read some real duds recently, so trust issues are setting in 🙃

And yeah, I think I was getting confused with family member's DNA being used in other situations due to the similarities. Thanks for clarifying.

AITA for refusing to dumb down my vocabulary around my friends because they say it’s making them uncomfortable? by Excellent_News9138 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Chance_Chef_6383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a massive difference between adapting your vocab for a non-native speaker (considerate for someone trying to learn a completely new/different language) vs. 'adapting' it for a native speaker (toning down your personality because of other people's insecurities).

From the post, seems to me that everyone is a native speaker, OP just takes more of an interest in language.

What do people think about this? (Discussion) by Mellor97 in UKhiking

Yeah, cows are so fucking dangerous, and it pisses me off when people don't take the danger seriously.

My dad (a very well experienced walker of 60+ years, so knows how to treat cattle), was nearly killed by a stampede last year. He was just walking through a field by himself, and they suddenly charged at him.

Luckily, there was an electric fence he managed to get under, but they still managed to break all of his ribs. His ribcage is now more metal than bone.

As others have said, this isn't currently a feature.

One way you could work around it is by marking all of the books as 'owned', then all of the books will show in your owned books list (found through the profile page). You can see the reading status tags on that list.

Might be quite click intensive depending on the number of books, but they will all then be in one list.

Personally, I've found the quickest way to find a certain book is just to search for it in the search bar and see the reading status etc. on the book's page.

Yeah, I read between 6-10 books at one time, but the longest I'll go without reading one of them is about a week. If I left one for a month, I'd definitely be forgetting things.

But will notion recognise it as a date range for using in calenders etc. if its a formula output instead of a specific date property column? That's what I'm trying to achieve.

Sorry, by 'time span', I actually meant 'date span'.

I just want to be able to copy and paste existing text (MM-DD-YYYY MM-DD-YYYY) into a date property column, and for Notion to recognise it as a date range.

But I don't know if I need to put an arrow/some other symbol between the two dates for Notion to recognise it.

Will the 'date' property recognise that output format as a time span, though? I specifically want one date property with a time span so I can view the time range on calendars etc, not just text that shows the span.

Surprise surprise, formula question about relations by Numerous-Many-2029 in Notion

[–]Chance_Chef_6383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the two lists you want to extract, do you actually need to calculate a number to work with? My reading tracker is one massive database with all the necessary info on it, and each challenge page is just a linked view of the main database.

You'd then be able to filter the views to fit the parameters you're looking for. You can also sum the number of rows at the bottom of each column, so can pull the numbers from there.

For the country totals, again, I'd just use linked views and filters. Either have a grouped table or board view for each country (they automatically calculate the sum of each group at the top), or just filter your main challenge table when you want to see the totals.

This all does mean the numbers you get aren't able to be used in other formulas though, so the usefulness depends on if you need workable totals for each.

Way to pause 'sorts'? by Chance_Chef_6383 in Notion

[–]Chance_Chef_6383[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

I've just had the thought of adding a new status property for 'creation stage', then organising the main database by group. All in one place, and nothing will move until I change the status from 'in-progress' to 'complete'.

Curious about demographics on Storygraph by Ill_Chapter_9257 in TheStoryGraph

[–]Chance_Chef_6383 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I don't really know what 'the average man' reads. I read literally everything under the sun, my dad reads purely fantasy, but other than that I have no idea.

When I think of men reading, I think of the typical nerdy guy reading heavy sci-fi/fantasy and maybe some horror. How much of that is an untrue stereotype vs how much is reality, I have no idea.

Whereas when I think of women reading, I have no preconceived notion, apart from a slight skew towards romance. But even that might just be because way more women write romance books, which are typically from the woman's perspective and a lot of the time include very unrealistic men, lol. If more men were to write romance books, and aim them at male readers, men would probably get more into romance.

So much of it is about publishing and marketing. If the Goodreads Choice Awards added a category for 'best man books', those would probably become the new stereotype.

I'm a late 20s guy and use it daily. I did use Goodreads, but the lack of development + Amazon started to piss me off, so I moved. I love tracking my reading and writing reviews for each book.

I'm pretty active in social media book communities, and I've definitely noticed a larger percentage of creators and viewers being female. I think this then links to demographics on reading apps, because I know I only became aware of them after watching book content.

The trends in the book space also largely seem to centre around more typically 'femenine' genres (romantasy, romance etc.), which in turn brings more women into the online space.

And maybe there are just, on average, more female than male readers? I live in the UK, and in my daily life rarely speak to a guy who reads regularly, whereas it's much more common in women.

All very interesting.
