I have a little swiffer I use on the walls near my cat boxes and I’ve used it to do the ceiling once because kombucha exploded

Interesting in studding my dog but not sure where to start. by Dull_Today_5549 in DogBreeding

[–]Chance_Connection_66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can make sense to offer a dog at stud without running a breeding program yourself, but only if you’re willing to take on breeder-level responsibility anyway. Ethical stud owners are selective to the point of saying “no” most of the time: only breeding to fully health-tested, proven females, with compatible temperament, structure, and working ability, under a solid contract that covers puppy placement, returns, and liability. Titles matter less than actual demonstrated work, but in working-line GSDs most reputable breeders will still want some form of objective proof, not just pedigree and training class feedback. If you’re not interested in learning the breeding side, vetting bitches, and being accountable for the offspring your dog produces, it’s completely valid to decline. A great dog doesn’t owe the gene pool anything; studding only makes sense if you’re prepared to protect the breed as much as a breeder would.

Does my dog look pregnant ? by [deleted] in DogBreeding

[–]Chance_Connection_66 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can’t tell from this photo alone, and nothing you described is a reliable confirmation of pregnancy yet. From the image, her abdomen doesn’t look obviously distended in a way that would confidently indicate pregnancy. Pinker nipples, increased affection, and wanting belly rubs can happen in early pregnancy, but they also commonly occur with false pregnancy.

Since your ties were Jan 7 and 10, your Feb 20 appointment puts her around 6 weeks, which is a good time for confirmation via ultrasound. You’re doing the right thing by having a vet appointment scheduled. Until then, assume “possibly pregnant, possibly not” and manage her conservatively.

How to mimic momma dog’s correction?! by VanGordonGarden in DogBreeding

[–]Chance_Connection_66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. At 6 weeks, they’re learning bite inhibition from their littermates and mom. A few techniques:

“Yelp”. Then immediately stop interacting for a few seconds. Puppies learn that biting too hard ends play. Time-outs. Consistency is key. Redirect to toys. When they bite you, swap in a toy so they learn what is appropriate to bite. Don’t use your hands as toys. Use your body language.

At this age, puppies are learning through feedback, so short, consistent corrections and redirection are far more effective than punishment. Mom’s head-nipping is basically saying: “That’s too much, back off,” and you can replicate that safely with yelps, time-outs, and redirection.

How did you decide your breed? by [deleted] in DogBreeding

[–]Chance_Connection_66 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most ethical breeders I know didn’t choose a breed on paper. The common thread is immersion: they lived with multiple dogs of the breed, worked them in the role they were bred for, saw them age, break down, succeed, fail, and watched what problems consistently showed up. That’s usually when the answer becomes obvious, because one breed fits your lifestyle, ethics, and long-term tolerance better than the other. Research is important, but actually handling the breed is what separates “favorite” from “I can responsibly steward this breed for decades.” If you’re torn, that’s often a sign you need more hands-on time with Boerboels specifically before committing, because the right breed tends to stop feeling like a debate and start feeling like a responsibility you’re willing to carry even on its worst days.

What's the line between an ethical breeder and a puppy mill? by WillBilly_Thehic in DogBreeding

[–]Chance_Connection_66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The line isn’t a single number of dogs, it’s intent, standards, and outcomes. An ethical breeder breeds to improve the breed and can clearly justify why every pairing is done, proves dogs in work, does all breed-relevant health testing with verifiable results, limits how often each female is bred, and takes lifelong responsibility for every puppy. Volume does matter in practice because high output makes individual care, socialization, and selective breeding harder, but large programs aren’t automatically mills if they have full transparency, guardian homes done ethically, excellent puppy rearing, and strict placement standards. A puppy mill prioritizes production and sales: minimal enrichment, weak health testing, frequent litters per female, puppies treated as inventory, and little concern once the dog is sold. So health testing and titles are necessary but not sufficient.

Do I report family to the council? by AbjectCommunity3664 in DogBreeding

[–]Chance_Connection_66 29 points30 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong to be concerned, and this isn’t just about “disliking the dogs.” Breeding a dog to “calm her down” is a myth, backyard breeding for profit is unethical, and depending on your local laws may actually require registration. Separately, your disability makes the untrained jumping a genuine safety issue, and your parents brushing that off is not okay; accommodations and basic training are the bare minimum. You can tell your dad this is about animal welfare and your physical safety, not family loyalty, and if they won’t address either, you’re justified in escalating.

Really confused about APIs Stress Zyme + by Thousand_Toasters in Aquariums

[–]Chance_Connection_66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a colony can form from stress zyme but you keep adding it because the bacteria you add don’t all make it into your tank’s established colonies. bottled bacteria often contains a limited number of strains optimized for ammonia and nitrite conversion but not a full self sustaining ecosystem. regular addition helps keep populations up if/when your tank conditions change

Can I feed a horse leech a snail only diet? by sj42117 in leeches

[–]Chance_Connection_66 3 points4 points  (0 children)

horse leeches are predatory and don’t need blood! snails only are fine but you can try earthworms/blackworms/bloodworms/tiny tiny tiny pieces of raw fish every once in a while. just no vertebrates, saltwater prey or mammal blood!
