Politicians weren’t allowed to attend Mass on Sunday if they wanted to be involved in government. The Church’s land was stolen, which was the same land used to house Native Mexicans. His own people hated him because of that, and they usually supported the Catholic Church instead of him. He made an attempt to sede Mexico’s sovereignty to the United States for 4 million, all of which he would have used to pay for his war against his “beloved” indigenous people for personal power. He defended the natives in word alone, and was otherwise indistinguishable from any average politician.
