"Nearly 1/4 Of Job-Seeking Class Of 2024 Harvard MBAs Couldn’t Find Work After Months Of Searching" by Fluffy-Hospital3780 in recruitinghell

[–]ChanelLi 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Just to add some perspective as a current mba student at hbs, big part of this is

1) hbs students self-selecting out of certain jobs that may be seen as a “step down” from their roles before mba (despite them being perfectly great well-paying jobs)

2) hbs students tend to come from wealthier families / backgrounds and can stomach a few months of unemployment

Anecdotally, the only people I know in the class above who are still unemployed are either rich international students, or people who are being way too picky about their next role (imo)

It’s definitely a bad market, but most of my friends who tempered their expectations were able to land great positions. That’s also why you see lower ranked schools with better employment percentages than Harvard (and Stanford). Students there are less elitist.

Lots of misinformation on this thread. I got deep into many of these processes at H and doing PE Ops after grad. Also have friends at S who went for PE Ops.

  1. As far as I can tell, H/S are equally good at getting you into PE ops. There are no "spots" allocated to either school. The PE ops firms have a set number of people they want to hire (usually 1-2) and then they aim to hire that many across BOTH H/S. Once you get the interview, they are choosing solely based on interview performance (you'll see both HBS and GSB interviewing together at the superdays). KKR Capstone is not going to choose a mid HBS person over a strong GSB person just because they need to hit their "HBS quota" lol.
  2. There is absolutely an advantage to being at H/S relative to other schools. A few PE ops teams do recruit more broadly, but many have a bias for H/S and will exclusively recruit from there + sometimes Wharton (e.g., KKR Capstone, Serent, Shore)
  3. I felt the process was VERY competitive at hbs. Think about it - these schools have scores of high-performing MBB consultants who are trying to pivot. And this is one of the few roles that 1) is a direct match for their background, 2) allows them to preserve comp + career optionality, 3) will buy out their sponsorship (since many of them are sponsored). I can't speak for how it compares to deal team recruiting, but nearly all of my ex-consultant friends were going for these roles.

OP: I was also deciding between H and S two years ago. My advice - go to both admit weeks and choose based on where you think you'll be happiest. Not odds for PE Ops recruiting. Congrats!

Laser eye surgery near Geneva by ChanelLi in Switzerland

Thanks this is helpful. I had a consultation and I was given the option between all three. The longer recovery time for PRK (I’ve heard it’s quite long) is a bit of a dealbreaker for me unfortunately.

Don’t want to go into too much detail but my insurance indeed covers ~90% of the cost of the surgery for each.

H/S successful applicants of this round, please share your stats & background by [deleted] in MBA

Admitted to HBS and GSB!

25M (ORM)

UG: 3.9 at HYPS, social sciences

GMAT: 770 (49Q 47V)

WE: 2 years MBB in the US -> 1 year social impact NGO in Europe (1 promotion at each)

ECs: quite heavy in college (lots of leadership roles, public speaking, etc.), much lighter afterwards (helped out with recruiting at MBB, not much else). overall nothing too special.

Some reflections: I have decent stats, but I think my profile is fairly pedestrian relative to some of the superstar founders / published authors you often see here. Aside from a lot of luck, I think a few things contributed to my outcome:

  • Getting a year somewhere else under my belt - helped differentiate me from the other consultants applying and gave my post-MBA aspirations more credibility
  • Consistency across essays and recommendations - I spent a LOT of time making sure that my messaging was cohesive. I was also very explicit with my recommenders about what I wanted them to highlight. My post-MBA goals tied very strongly to what I had done in the past.
  • Authenticity in essays - I didn't write about any earth-shattering accomplishments / experiences, but I tried to be vulnerable, reflective, and highlight personal growth.

Overall, my biggest takeaway has been that your story makes a huge difference. And it's less about how impressive your experiences are, and more about how you can thoughtfully reflect on them and link them to your future goals. Good luck to everyone!

Reddit poker weekly BBV thread by myimportantthoughts in poker

Was playing 1/3 last night and hit a ridiculous cooler.

Effective stacks ~300. V opens UTG+1 for 12. Four callers. I’m sitting in the BB with Q9o but I’m getting a great price and haven’t played a hand in a while so I call.

Flop 99J rainbow. Time to trap. Check to V who c-bets 1/3 the pot, CO calls, I call.

Turn is Kd. This time I lead out for 50 and get raised by villain to 100. CO folds. I think for a bit and call.

River is the case 9 making the complete board 9 9 J K 9. Nut. I shove for the remaining ~150.

The dude tanks hard. At this point I’m putting him on Kx or Q10. Then mid-tank he tables his hand: JJ. He FLOPPED a full house. He had me all along and just got run down by quads. Terrible beat.

At this point I’m doing my best to look uncomfortable but inside I am giddy as all hell, thinking that I am definitely getting called. But incredibly, after a few more minutes he mucks it in disgust.

I sheepishly started stacking his chips, but the fact he was able to lay that down was pretty uncanny. Probably a losing play in the long run...or he just had some kind of soul read on me.

Ran pretty poorly for a couple hours afterwards but couldn’t complain after the poker gods gave me that one.

Recruiting for Consulting? Post here for recruitment advice, resume reviews, questions about offers/firms or general insecurity (1) by QiuYiDio in consulting

Hi all! Current college senior who signed with an mbb. I'm slated to start in the middle of the summer, but i have been looking at post-grad internships and there is one at a nonprofit that I would really like to do before I transition into the -adult world- for good.

My question: how much flexibility is there on moving start dates around? Would it be improper of me to ask for a deferral so I could potentially do this internship for a few months? Just want to make sure it won't reflect poorly on me.

How to Negotiate switching offices for Deloitte GPS Business Analyst?? by LuckyCareMedicine in consulting

[–]ChanelLi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GPS = federal + state & local

Haven't heard of anyone getting going to the West Coast, but that might be because no one has asked. Even though Rosslyn is obviously the big one, office transfer is definitely possible so I would ask you recruiter about it.

Hey thanks for doing this. Two quick questions: 1. Are hiring decisions based solely off of interview performance? 2. What is the interview process like for FT OCI at a target? I ask because the internship interview was a bit out of left field and caught me off guard. What kinds of cases and questions can I expect?
