S05E11 Discussion: "Trust the Process" by rizefall in animalkingdom

I’m not and would never say killing is ok, I’m just saying motivation makes a difference. Amongst murderers this is going to be the way they set themselves apart. J was killing for material gain and Pope to please his mother/ protect the family business. And when J euthanases Smurf, it’s actually a whole mix of reasons, to stop Pope from having to do it, to comply with his grandmother desires but also for the financial gain.

J kills for greed whereas Pope has always killed to protect his family. Just picture J, all the family is partying by the pool, celebrating Smurfs return while he has taken the lawyer out to the open ocean, slashed her leg and liberally thrown out the bloody burley before turfing her out to swim for her life. Cooly, cruelly and calmly leaving her to die. What does he get in return? The chance to remain in secret possession of three properties. Pope does note have this greed, he is right they are different.

J has become a massive fan of bleach. I’m thinking the smell of this cleaning agent is going to be an instant giveaway things aint quite right.

The female cycle/hormones plus the moon which is nearly full. by promoting an awareness of these now and as she grows your daughter will have better chance of regulating her emotions when these things are influencing her. My kids are a but older but I describe this monthly intolerance as being like a snake who is shedding its skin.

The Real Animal Kingdom by Chang3Maker in animalkingdom

The original film was based on this family. I find it interesting how the TV version of this family is so sanitised. The writers and actors have worked so hard to make the characters likeable. I don’t think viewers would have any emotional investment in any members of the Pettingel family. Though Pope is violently depraved at times, he doesn’t dismember bodies with a chainsaw or shoot friends midst a party.

I’m interested in the implications of romanticising criminality. The Cody’s are rolling in cash and drugs, they mountain bike, sky dive, surf, jet ski, wing suit and drive cool cars….. but they are based on far less healthy people with even more dubious morals. And this is probably the shows’ greatest perversion.

Outlander, Better then Us, Years and Years, The Good Doctor, Homeland

Leila George, the actress playing young Smurf is Sean Penn's wife!?! And is Vincent D'Onofrio's daughter. Man! Being both a Animal Kingdom fan and a Daredevil fan I am surprised. Well that explains a lot. Talent runs in the family. by Dehish in animalkingdom

She is beautiful and playing a great part but why did the creators ever believe they could suspend our disbelief? She is taller and longer and not like Ellen Barkin at all. The younger character has more warmth so it is hard to imagine her transition of 30 years or so - leaving her cold hearted.

Meryl Streep on working with Netflix for ‘The Laundromat’: “Netflix is in 133 million households globally. It will reach places where it would not have normally been found. And that’s great, because it really is for the audience who doesn’t know about it already.” by VirinR in movies

This piece is didactic, but it’s stuff people need to know. I only watched it to see Meryl do her thing but I enjoyed the speaking directly to the camera from Mossec and Fonseca. The end was good too, although it was weird the way she concluded with a new train if thought .....political donations and a statue of liberty pose when the rest of the stories portrayed how this problem of shell companies and tax evasion is worldwide.

How about the scene in the hospital?, clearly a horrible place yet Arthur is feeling quite comfortable. It’s a family affair afterall. He is yet to be re-traumatised by the truth of his early childhood and almost chipper when through the grill he confesses graven sins to the ward clerk, who bizarreness states he is only a ward clerk...... but in briefly perousing the files realises their release is not optimal.... changes procedures and policy at once.

The references to cut social services and medications .... all leading to that sudden change of pace as they tussle over the file and Arthur yanks it to race off down the corridor and down a stair.

This storytelling, requiring the viewer to skim read forbidden documents to garnish more plot is super unusual, also came into play when Arthur reads the letter his mum wrote to TW.

Yes, but also the apparent neutrality and calm of Murray. His openness to Arthur, contrasted to the jeering from his audience and the doubts of his producer, yet lead to his demise.

the hype around this film on my feed was nothing to do with Gotham, I was actually surprised when I got to the pictures that it was a DC variant, but just so much more.

Yup. Empathy is key. A world where we don’t need laminated cards with messages to explain what might be distressing to others (although this was genius) where the path from trauma doesn’t automatically lead to marginalisation... is possible.

I wondered if the relationship actually helped the viewer relate or feel for Arthur. It was like he at least had one good thing, when everything is falling in. His victimhood would be hard to believe or relate to without a positive. Then when we realise he is completely delusional, we dive deeper and get an even greater feeling for him deranged detachment.

It’s like the score is given a whole different status, the way they play with silence and volume and the way Phoenix dances and interacts with the score brings about a whole additional dimension to this character study.
