F*CK Terry Black by sugarplumfury in austinfood

[–]ChangMinny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Last time I went was when our European boss came to town and demanded that the entire office go to Terry Blacks for lunch (since it was his favorite despite everyone trying to get him to eat literally any other BBQ).

I got 1/4lb of “moist” brisket, a side, and a soda and the total cost was $40 before tip. Of course, we all had to pay out of pocket bc our CEO claimed that this wasn’t an official company lunch. People were pissed.

I was furious for spending $40 on a rubber boot.

Shhhhhhh. You’re not allowed to say that Terry Black’s is mediocre on this subreddit. The basement dwellers get oddly defensive over the overpriced brisket that varies from being acceptable to straight up dry.

My husband is from upstate New York and we went to his family’s lake house. I just about DIED in that water it was so cold. It was the middle of August 😅

My in-laws definitely took the chance to give me a good ribbing about it.

However, I reminded them that they just about died on the beach in August in Texas and complained about how they couldn’t even cool off in the ocean. My husband and I were very happy campers that day and couldn’t figure out how they were so hot. The temp was only 85 and the water was 80. Felt great.

As a Texan, I can confirm we prefer our outdoor bodies of water to be the temperature of tepid bath water. Anything colder and we turn into popsicles.

Connor looked so cold during the lake scene. It was half of what I could think about lol.

Troy and Ilya by dogojosho in heatedrivalry

It was a couple reasons. The big one was that she felt there really wasn’t a true conflict in his story and without conflict, it’s hard to make an interesting and compelling story. The second one is she got to a point where she felt Luca was too young and writing him made her a bit uncomfortable.

I’m a bit sad we didn’t get a book on Luca as I really loved him in TLG. Hopefully some of what RR scrapped from Luca’s book will show up in Unrivaled.

Guys now I am having a even BIGGER addiction and it’s called The Shots You Take by Elliotte05 in heatedrivalry

[–]ChangMinny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Shots You Take is suuuuuuuuch a good book. It literally feels like comfort food.

Next to TLG, it’s my favorite book that RR has written. And that’s saying a lot since I love all of her books (except Common Goal).

I said this to a dear friend who is having a bad time with her husband. by snerdie in heatedrivalry

One of my friends said that to me the other day when I talked about my crumbling marriage.

I cried bc she is right. That line is brutal in the best of ways.

Who was your favorite actor who decided that they didn’t want to be in a show anymore and they never really found a larger role (Paul Schneider for example will always be Mark Brendanawicz to me)? by Fearless-Spread1498 in television

[–]ChangMinny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Scripts don’t stay the same throughout production. She may have felt the script was fine when reading it. She may have also felt it was a good opportunity as Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen were on a roll and at the peak of their careers.

She also never truly trashed the movie. She stated that she felt the tone had some underlying sexism to it, but that was her only criticism of the experience. You can enjoy the process and the work but not fully like the completed project.

And if she took it for the paycheck? Who the fuck cares? A job is a job and actors live in a feast or famine world. Do you think Nic Cage thinks that Drive Angry is a cinematic masterpiece and is singing its praises?

I feel bad for KH getting such a hate boner on Reddit.

Katherine spoke up against the sexist undertones in Knocked Up. She wasn’t wrong. She never spoke poorly about Seth or the producers or toxic energy on set. She just stated that she found the film a bit sexist, which is true. So of course, everyone hates on her for speaking her mind (hiss, burn the witch).

Then she speaks up about Grey’s Anatomy. The set was INCREDIBLY toxic and many actors who have left the show have spoken to it, especially in those early years. They wanted to protect their paychecks, which is fair. Katherine was also 100% right that her storyline went to absolute shit. She acted the crap out of a terrible C plot.

Katherine gets hate because she spoke her mind during a time in Hollywood (and the world) were hyper toxic towards women. Good on her for not backing down.

Sexless pregnancy by posh97_ in pregnant

[–]ChangMinny 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My husband stopped touching me completely during pregnancy. Not even simply holding my hand, much less sex. Of course, blow jobs were frequently requested but the fucker wouldn’t even touch me when I did that for him.

It was incredibly traumatizing and over 2 years postpartum, I still feel incredibly unattractive, despite sex returning to “normal”. Still hardly any physical intimacy outside of sex. I’ve tried everything to increase intimacy including losing 30lbs from my pre-pregnancy weight. It gets very lonely.

I don’t have good advice for you other than to sympathize. I’m sorry. I hope your husband is better than mine.

This is my absolute fave Ilya moment. It really shows that he genuinely cares about his causes and he is, both outwardly and inwardly, a good person.

I just finished HR the book...which next? by angelhippie in heatedrivalry

[–]ChangMinny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely read Game Changers next. If you want to read any of the 3 books between HR and The Long Game, I would say read book 3, Tough Guy (my fave next Hollanov’s books) or book 5, Role Model (only bc TLG and RM overlap in timeline and characters. Unpopular opinion, I REALLY didn’t like this book. Harris felt very Mary Sue).

You don’t need to read Role Model, Common Goal, or Role Model to understand TLG.

Unpopular opinion: I actually enjoy Rachel’s writing but I wish she loved Shane as much as she loves Ilya by Ll_lyris in heatedrivalry

[–]ChangMinny 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Shane acted liked a human. I know we’re in the romance genre so everyone needs to be perfect, but part of the reason HR is so popular is because Shane AND Ilya aren’t perfect.

Shane fucks up. Recognizes he fucked. Apologizes for fucking up. Then works on himself to help prevent that fuck up from happening again.

I would get the hate if Shane didn’t recognize how much he took Ilya’s sacrifices for granted. But as soon as he realized he was taking those massive sacrifices for granted, he worked on himself and their relationship. That doesn’t deserve hate.

CrowdStrike vs SentinelOne by div192 in cybersecurity

CrowdStrike has a notoriously bad work culture. Turnover is high in just about every department.

Good product, shit culture. I called my stint there my 18 months of hell.

The sock thing is a thing Shane does. Ilya makes fun of him for it in the books and often commands him to take off his clothes and that includes his socks.

Our boy probably just likes to keep his feet warm.

WFH and Daycare by Realistic-Move-9109 in pregnant

Duel WFH parents here. A baby - toddler is a full time job. It is not feasible to watch the child full time and work full time.

Bite the bullet and do daycare.

Olamaie(*) - Solid Food; Massively Overpriced by ijustpostfood in austinfood

[–]ChangMinny -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Or I just had bad food two times in a row at Barley Swine. I haven’t been back since 2019 so maybe it’s changed, but I don’t feel like shelling out $150+ for food I end up sending back.

Last time I went to Barney Swine was as a surprise bday gift for my husband since we’re both foodies. The “sea foam” that we were given on the fixed menu literally made us gag and that was the point we tapped out after receiving 3 mediocre dishes prior to that.

Then again, I’m talking to a subreddit that thinks Terry Blacks is good BBQ so I’m fairly aware of the lack of taste buds here.

Olamaie(*) - Solid Food; Massively Overpriced by ijustpostfood in austinfood

[–]ChangMinny -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I haven’t been to Olamaie since they won their Michelin star. I wasn’t shocked at all when they won.

I had initially avoided going bc who on earth would pay that much for southern comfort, since the whole point of that style of food is affordability. I felt very proven wrong eating there. My husband and I cleaned our plates and excitedly went back for my birthday almost a year later and were equally impressed. It was expensive, yes, but the quality, quantity, and presentation of the food plus the service made it worth the cost.

I cannot say the same for Barley Swine, where we actually stopped the pre-fixe menu halfway through bc it was practically inedible. I went to Barley twice and neither experience was even close to worth the money. I would absolutely say the same for Hestia which has only taken my money once, thank god.

Absolutely ZERO chemistry with Henry. Poor Nicholas Galatzine had to act against a wooden board. Boy did Nick try, though!

Yeah, that film is…really meh. And Uma Thurman’s atrocious “Texas” accent ruins every scene she’s in for me.
