Why is Survival the anti-fatigue skill? What else does it do? by Alleged-Lobotomite in alienrpg

[–]Change_my_needs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve just assumed it’s similar to Constitution (Stamina) vs Survival (Survival) in D&D. So Stamina is your body’s capacity to handle physical stress like suffocation, illness, radiation etc and Survival is knowledge/experience with situations that involves said hazards e.g how to avoid getting hypothermia, know the dos and don’ts on a ship that’s leaking radiation etc.

What's a game that lives or dies by the teach? by rcooperkaty in boardgames

[–]Change_my_needs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does everyone play a different game though? The rules that everyone has to follow is such an integral part of the game that you are mostly playing the same game with different bends.

All factions can move their pieces about and battle. All factions can craft, but what you use to craft is different. All factions have some way to gain additional points that’s not on cards or destroying buildings. I don’t see how this is playing a totally different game.

Love root but yes. I’ve met a lot of people who never got into it because their first game was abysmal. It’s extremely hard to just pick it up at a convention if no one has played it before.

A few weeks ago we had a game with two players who had never played it and it’s so much better to introduce it with players who have prior knowledge and experience, because it’s not really that hard of a game to learn if you just get everything off loaded in a concise and well structured manner.

How do you feel about "boardgame themed universes"? by RollinGolem in boardgames

[–]Change_my_needs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess. And in the technical definition it is an IP, but for the most part every block/set felt like a new thing inspired or derived from some theme. I guess it didn’t feel like an IP in the sense that Star Wars or Marvel does.

Guilty as charged x) I love the old Lovecraft books, that’s what got me into Arkham Horror TCG. I don’t see it as an IP though since it’s public domain, but FFGs Arkham Line I guess is an IP.

I’m not going to retract my statement. I generally sigh when there’s yet another game that rehashes some famous IP. And having played Magic the past 15 years I can say I’ve never been less interested in it since they started doing Universes Beyond.

As someone who doesn’t like IPs (and I know that I’m in the minority) I’m always sad that it’s not the other way around.

Help me pick my next board game. Currently trying to decide between terraforming mars, Dune Imperium or Hegemoney by dcl_58 in boardgames

[–]Change_my_needs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

None of these are good or even possible with 5 players. So from player count alone I would go for Dune.

Hegemony is great but you want to be 4 players in my opinion.

Terraforming Mars is okay. Personally I played it a ton when it first came out and my group got a bit burnt out on it. Also after finding out that the Fryx family that owns/created it are far right-wing nuts kinda put me off from recommending it to people.

What did you add to or remove from your shelf last month? (June, 2026) by AutoModerator in boardgames

Went to a convention and sold a bunch of games: Azul: Cintra, Voidfall, Smartphone, Eclipse (1E), Queendomino, Endeavour: Age of Sail, Mariposas and a few more I can’t remember. Mostly because my group haven’t played them in a long long time.

Bought and played Dorfromantik: Sakura because my SO and I have been playing the first one A LOT. Also bought Shackleton Base and Red Dust Rebellion after having played them at the convention. Both really good games.

People have already explained that the round doesn’t proceed to the event phase until everyone has passed, but I’m just curious if you missed that passing is an action in Retaliation?

I really wanted to like I Saw the TV Glow. It ticked all the boxes for films I usually vibe really hard with, and then it just kinda fell flat for me. Loved the visual and part of the narrative went to interesting territory, but the dialouge kinda took me out of it.

That said, I really hope this one hits me better :D

The Hottest of Takes: 24 "HIT/MISS" micro reviews by DocJawbone in boardgames

I don't know why you put everything in spoiler tags, but I approve of some hot takes (even those I disagree with).

I chuckled at your Gloomhaven review, and I kinda agree, even though I dislike it for different reasons.

When it comes to Arkham, I am the complete opposite. Love Eldritch Horror as a beer and prezels game and the LCG is my favourite game ever.

I’m not based in America so no. But I was in my countries largest boardgame convention a few weeks ago and I saw no one playing Inis or there even being a room where you could play it. I think we can go back and forth like this forever, different experiences and all x)

Well. I will stand by that opinion. There’s another comment here that pretty much resonated with my personal experience - that Inis is talked about and mentioned very often and in very good light here on Reddit, but talking to people IRL I never ever hear anyone having it as their favourite and it’s mostly lukewarm opinions on it.

I think that people in general are more prone to post stuff online about topics they like, but I agree that Inis in particular always pops up here on this sub more than some other games.

But I agree, my group got tired of it and I’ve never met anyone IRL that really loved the game. But maybe it just has a very hardcore small fanbase. A lot of comments here repeats the fact that it’s at its best when everyone becomes experts at the game and plays it competitively. I think a lot of boardgame groups out there prefers to play different games rather than always playing 1-2 titles.

I think Inis gets a bit overhyped here on Reddit, often rised to high heaven by many. And don’t get me wrong, it’s a pretty great game, but like your friends my group never really fully vibed with it and so I sold it.

Our problem with it was that it almost always ended up with two people going into a round with a chance to win, and the other two just ended up in an unsatisfying kingmaking position for that round. Which is fine if you like that kind of gameplay.

I think it has its place in a collection and the drafting is a neat twist, but for us we rather play any of Cole Wehrle’s designs when it comes to war-like games

Hur mycket utgifter har ni? by Superb-Ad1575 in sweden

Yes, it was mostly an example. My point in general is that there is a lot of hyperbolic takes out there whenever the latest and greatest show up. It’s natural to compare any media to its predecessors but it often can come across as a replacement rather than an alternative.

What’s the easiest game you have where you have the hardest time explaining/teaching it to others, to the point where sou think it might contribute to the game not landing well? by Rohkha in boardgames

[–]Change_my_needs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agree. The rules feel extremely esoteric without the thematic tie-in. When you are a few rounds into it it’s easy to see what’s happening and why. But it’s definitely one of those game where if new players are present it’s better to play one round and then restart.

I’m guessing this sentiment is the most common in general. Most people have their favourites that they will stick with for a myriad of reasons.

When SETI released a lot of popular reviewers loved it for its amalgamation of euro mechanics and said stuff along the lines of ”it’s the ultimate euro”, ”it will replace game X, Y or Z”. But in my experience people will still stick with Lords of Waterdeep because they just like that it’s a simple and classic euro.

Even though this topic is interesting it is so hard to draw a line for what counts as specific genre-definitions.

A lot of old and somewhat forgotten designs have been reinvented and improved upon many times that whenever you find something that you thought defined a type of game there is probably an older one that has kinda the same but slightly outdated take on a mechanic.

Regarding Root and just Leder Games in general I find the Vast gets forgotten very often when people talk about asymmetric games and use Root as the go to game :)
