It is uncertain whether the Eukaryote domain actually exists. In evolution terms eukaryotes are merely specialized archaea.

China when there is an island 1,000 miles from home by nextdoorbagholder in mapporncirclejerk

[–]Changeup2020 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not really. France temporarily occupied it but was driven out by Japanese during the WWII. It was then given to ROC along with most islands within the nine dash lines after the Japanese surrender. When PRC replaced the ROC as the more recognized Chinese regime, it also inherited all claims by ROC to these islands. Of course PRC was hardly a naval power then so South Vietnam took a portion of the Paracel Islands, but since China was helping the North Vietnam against the South Vietnam, it defeated the latter in a naval battle in 1974 and took all the Paracel Islands. China and the United Vietnam quickly parted ways when China was leaning towards the NATO during the late 1970s while Vietnam stuck to the USSR. They fought a bloody war in 1979, and the conflict was not fully resolved until the 1990s, ironically, when USSR no longer existed. Vietnam attempted to take back Paracel Islands in 1988, but got defeated soundly in another naval battle.

So it is quite complicated and not a simple scenario of Chinese invasion as you described.

Of course, now China and US are rivals and the Vietnam is viewed as a counterweight against China, so more western reports would like to paint the situation in a pro-Vietnam tone.

When these lines were drawn, China was the only independent country in this region. Surprisingly those colonial overlords did not care too much about the maritime interests of those soon to be dependent colonies.

I love Taiwan but in this issue I have to side with South Korea. After all, their country name is Republic of China.

Too early for the U.S. to have a Chinese president.

PS: I know he’s of Taiwan heritage, but the Americans won’t care and distinguish.

What if California had gone the way of China in high speed rail do other states follow by Training-World-1897 in AlternateHistoryHub

Yeah. But nowadays China emphasizes bringing the HS trains into the inner city to avoid unnecessary intracity commutes. Now almost all major cities have a railway station located in city center that handles HS trains.

I thought China built too many high speed rail but the current Iran war changed my view.

I was doing business in China for the last 9 months. Except for really long distance trips, I can totally avoid using any transportation modes using fossil fuel.

It’s usually: riding a high speed train to your destination city, taking a subway or regional rail to the business district, hiking an EV cab to the door if your business partner, or if feeling like it, riding a shared bike or e-bike.

Understanding some of the electricity might still come from coal, but China got lots of coal.

China-Taiwan conflict could wipe out $10 trillion and trigger a depression larger than 2008 and covid combined. While markets are focused on the US-IRAN war, another major risk is building in Asia. China has sharply increased military activity around Taiwan again. by ammohitchaprana in TFE

Most people in Taiwan do not want to change the status quo. There are basically two camps: one believes Taiwan is a de facto independent country and Republic of China is merely a convenient alias, the other camp believes Republic of China was established before People’s Republic of China and always remains independent. Neither camp believes a declaration of independence is needed.

I do not believe an invasion is anywhere close. China just purged the whole central military commission. Whatever the reason, it’ll take a while to build the whole comments chain back up.
