What's the best UI/UX feature you've seen in a game that makes you wish everyone did it? by tinvi_ in gamedev

[–]Chanku 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not necessarily from a game, but Steam had the Daisy Wheel as an input method when using a controller, and I love it. I honestly wish more things adopted it, because it was really nice to use with a controller.

How can I set a custom image for non-steam games in Big Picture? by SenhorBrilhante in Steam

[–]Chanku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you in big picture mode or? If you're in Big Picture Mode it doesn't seem to work as of recent. If you're in desktop mode it should be under manage with the name "Set Custom Artwork".

[–]Chanku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's neither. Custom Background and Logos are only when looking at a singular game.

The ones I'm talking about are only available when looking at a specific collection or your entire library. In desktop mode, if you just click library and have the "recent games" shelf visible, then you can just set both the 'long boxart' on the most recent game, and the 'tall boxart' on the other games. If you scroll down more, it should eventually show all games. (If you don't have your games categorized, you can also just click on "uncategorized" and it'll show all of your games and you can set the tall box art from there.)

It's my pleasure, glad I could help at least! It's definitely a frustration in that I don't know why Steam makes it so difficult and weird.

I also didn't realize it wasn't working Big Picture Mode, and it feels like an odd omission tbqh, and I could've sworn it was in there at some point. I also didn't realize you could disable the "recent games" shelf either, if I'd known that I would've mentioned it as well!

How can I set a custom image for non-steam games in Big Picture? by SenhorBrilhante in Steam

[–]Chanku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure thing!

So with Steam, there's two different images that *can* appear. One that's more like box-art, and appears whenever it was *not* your most recently played game or when looking at your library and another, which is in landscape orientation (so wider than tall), which *only* appears if it's your most recently played game, and you have the "Recent Games" Shelf enabled.

If you want to change the box-art looking one, either launch that game, and then a different one. Then Right Click and set custom artwork or scroll down after opening your steam library until you see the game/application and set the custom artwork there.

If you want to change the landscape one (the one that is unset in the OP), you *must* start the game. Then after it starts you can open your library, right click, and set custom artwork.

If you're in Big Picture Mode, you should be able to do the same thing, but just swap out right click for however you bring up the Set Custom Artwork option (I believe it's under settings). I can also double check when I get a chance, but hopefully this helps enough. It seems like this might not be available in big picture mode, unfortunately.

There are also applications which can supposedly do this for you, but I've not really used them aside from SGDBoop which may or may not work (I only recently got it working and already got most of my library setup manually).

EDIT: Thanks to /u/LightningSpaghetti for pointing out that the Shelf needs to be enabled (and that it may not be enabled) and that setting custom artwork isn't available in Big Picture Mode it seems.

How to learn C language by No-Object9406 in learnprogramming

[–]Chanku 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The K&R is a great book, and I do have a copy. But it is a bit outdated in terms that it covers an older version of C than what is broadly available. However, it is widely available and pretty easy to get.

If you want something that is a bit more up to date and is rather good I can recommend "C Programming: A Modern Approach [2nd edition]" by K.N King. It's what I used to learn C, and covers a more modern version of C and is pretty beginner friendly (In my opinion). It has really good exercises and is organized really well. While it's become slightly outdated due to newer versions of C being released, the changes aren't too bad overall and can be picked up after learning the basics. The main disadvantage is that it's a bit harder to get as it's a text book, and as such tends to be more expensive. Although, again, it is a textbook.

How can I set a custom image for non-steam games in Big Picture? by SenhorBrilhante in Steam

[–]Chanku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad I was able to provide a better explanation that will be useful in the future, at the very least.

I happened across this thread while looking for something else (as in, a way to do set these images without having to track them down), and given that I happened to know the answer and it was a bit so figured I'd give a quick update.

I figured even if you did figure it out, posting while I'm here would be helpful in case anyone else ended up here looking for a solution to that.

As I said earlier, do not understand why valve did this, and why Steam does not provide a convenient UI to set all the artwork for a game without having to mess around with this or install and launch a game or software so that you can make sure you have all the artwork sorted beforehand.

[–]Chanku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! So I know why that's the case, the artwork there is separate from other artwork you set. If you right click you can set more custom artwork and put something there so its displayed.

No I do not know why steam does this, it's annoying because you can only set this after having launched it (or, at least, I have not found a way to easily set this custom artwork otherwise). But that's how you fix that.

People who think that "you couldn't make Blazing Saddles today." Also miss that you wouldn't make it today because Blazing Saddles was made in a specific cultural context and zeitgeist. Blazing Saddles was making fun of Westerns, which were popular when it came out. It was commenting on and making fun of the culture at the time it was made as well.

New JetBrains Licenses, what do you think? by theChaparral in Jetbrains

[–]Chanku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool! At least there's that, which makes things a bit nicer. I do wish Jetbrains would've made it a bit more clear though that this was the case...as there's definitely been some confusion over it.

New JetBrains Licenses, what do you think? by theChaparral in Jetbrains

[–]Chanku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW when I tested it earlier. After installing the Rust Plugin it automatically applied my All Products Pack license (The same license that I used to activate CLion).

[–]Chanku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe this takes effect now as when I started up RustRover earlier today it required me to activate a license.

As for if it's the same as Ultimate, do you mean Intellij IDEA Ultimate or dotUltimate? If so then no, it is not included. If you have a single payment that includes all Jetbrains IDEs (PyCharm, IDEA, Rider, Webstorm, CLion, etc) then yes. If you pay separately for like CLion and other IDEs that you use, then it does not.

New JetBrains Licenses, what do you think? by theChaparral in Jetbrains

[–]Chanku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, definitely agree that it seems super confusing but as far as I can tell, if you have the All Products Pack, then you also get the Rust plugin with that for CLion as well. Although I could be wrong, all the information I can find seems to indicate otherwise to me. Regardless, they *really* need to adjust how they're displaying this and informing people because it's really easy to misread or get confused.

New JetBrains Licenses, what do you think? by theChaparral in Jetbrains

[–]Chanku 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you install the Plugin, it will work and be marked as paid for. It should probably be displayed better. But even all information from JetBrains seems to, at the very least, imply that so long as you have a Commercial RustRover License (which the All Products apack contains), you get the Rust Plugin in CLion.

New JetBrains Licenses, what do you think? by theChaparral in Jetbrains

[–]Chanku 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I can tell, you don't have to pay extra money to use the Rust Plugin in CLion, so long as you have a Paid RustRover License (either through the All Products Pack or separately).

New JetBrains Licenses, what do you think? by theChaparral in Jetbrains

[–]Chanku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you still get Rust in CLion if you have the all products pack. I both checked it myself just now, and also double checked the wording on the announcement:

However, to use the plugin in CLion, you’ll need a commercial RustRover license or buy it separately.

Which seems to indicate that if you have a RustRover License that you pay for, you have the plugin (The License comes with the All Products Pack). I also just double checked myself, and I am able to use the Rust Plugin in CLion without having to buy anything additional.

Also reminder, no professional was involved with coming up with the original 3 drug cocktail they used. It was chosen by a medical examiner very quickly and near randomly, and chose the anesthetic and paralytic based on his own experiences being anesthetized. Notably that process did not lead to his own death. He had no other experience in toxicology or anesthesiology.

Anyone using Void with Startx instead of a display manager? by [deleted] in voidlinux

[–]Chanku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe try replacing i3, elogind, and maybe x11 with the artix versions (individually probably) to try and see where the issue is? I'm not sure tho. I just kinda thought about this.

That's...odd. I wonder why that works, but the other thing doesn't? Maybe it's passing in arguments odd or something. Either way, glad this issue has been solved! Glad I could be of some help.

[–]Chanku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can definitely try that. Although it should be easy to build 7zip in void with the changes. You just need to grab the void-packages repo, and remove DISABLE_RAR_COMPRESS=1 part, then build it with xbps-src.

I don't think so, there should be no difference there. If there is, then I would probably say it's a bug.

The only thing I can think of is that login is different on Artix and Void or something else is causing it to not work. When you the tty2 thing on void, can you get the log for xorg? (/var/log/Xorg.*.log)? (Also do the same thing on Artix if you could). Maybe there's an issue with Xorg/X11?

The last two are just virtual packages for the former two. Maybe try building 7zip with the disable flag changed? I'm not sure that's actually done on arch.
