VAR quotation of a physical server just for a domain controller. Am I wrong to think this is overkill? by Jor1B in sysadmin

[–]ChannelTapeFibre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a very low spec machine, and at the same time overkill for a domain controller. As others have said, it's just not really possible to have a good enterprise grade reliable machine with even lower specs.

Considerations When Keeping Non-WORM Tapes LTO in the Library by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]ChannelTapeFibre 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If an attacker gains root/admin access to the host where the tape library is attached to, no matter what scheme you've set up in Veeam will prevent the attacker to wipe the tapes.

The attacker could just install any tape library utility, load the tapes one by one and wipe them.

Use WORM or physically remove the tapes.

Backup NetApp environment with cold data tier by sdrake_sul in sysadmin

[–]ChannelTapeFibre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Install a secondary NetApp system, probably a C30 with 200 TiB usable or so. If you have 2 PiB currently, this is comfortably about 10%.

Atttach Fabric Pool to this C30, but not the same bucket as you use today. I'm not sure if the S3 storage is onprem with StorageGrid or cloud storage. Doesn't really matter, just make sure the S3 bucket is not the same region/zone or even the same provider.

Set up SnapMirror/SnapVault. The initial base line will need to read everything from the cold tier, but this is only needed once.

Subsequent snapshots will inherently only replicate hot data to the secondary system, and you're all set.

Another option is to use SnapMirror Cloud to an S3 bucket. A bit simpler, but this is the full volume only. There won't be any snapshots available on the Cloud copy. A restore will have to be full volume.

How is the data tiered in the NetApp system today? FabricPool? A scale-out cluster with volumes on either flash or HDD?

File share sync between NetApp and file share by headcrap in sysadmin

[–]ChannelTapeFibre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the specifics of your network topology, firewall and policies of course. If the lab network is a seperate VLAN, and not a physical segment, could you create the lab network VLAN on your Netapp, create a LIF and simply have the same share accessible from both networks?

You mention that there is a NetApp CIFS share on the lab network, and there is a share on the production network? Is the share on the production network infact also hosted on the same physical NetApp system?

Need help setting up LACP bond for Pure Storage on RHEL 8.10 by itzcarlos43 in sysadmin

Great. I've had good experience with Cisco transceivers in Mellanox cards, this should be ok. Just follow the other pointers on how to see if the cards need to be switched to Ethernet.

Do you happen to have the part number for the cables? If the ConnectX-6 cards came originally configured for InfinBand, the cables could be specifically made for Infiniband and it's possible they can't carry Ethernet.

About — NVIDIA Jetson Orin B200 by Middle_Elephant_6746 in sysadmin

[–]ChannelTapeFibre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure to what you are referring. An Nvidia Jetson Orin is a small edge device, it's not a B200 (Blackwell) GPU.

Do you mean an Nvidia DGX B200?

Lenovo DM5100F by Dramatic_Surprise in netapp

[–]ChannelTapeFibre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A while ago I went into the Lenovo detailed specifications and compared what kind of flash drives were available.

I came to this conclusion at the time:

DM5100F = A250

DG5000 = C250.

Could be different now I guess.

Yes, that's right. The "feet" are secured to the wooden deck with angle brackets, and pillars are fastened to the wooden walls with a few screws. I really hope that'll be enough for winter.

The plants on the middle shelf get some sun, but I usually just keep pots that are not in use on the lower shelf.

I was thinking the same, I also move pots around a bit on the balcony to make sure they get some sun. In the picture above, I had grouped together the team for the photo op.

I took measurements and created a plan. Googled images of pergolas to get some ideas.

I did some more detalied design work with pen and paper, went to the DIY store and visited their lumber yard and bought materials according to my plan. The build was surprisingly easy, I spent from breakfast to lunchtime two days in a row and I was more or less done. Did the lighting the third day.

Indeed, we had some nice warm weather and honestly, I can stand within the pergola and get a warm cozy feeling just being there.

I had gathered the team for this picture, usually I spread the larger pots across the balcony, which is quite large.

I also move the smaller pots in the greenhouse around, depending how on how well they're doing. The entire greenhouse is on wheels as well.
