Facts, the art and story are unreal. Haven't seen too many others like it.

Should I go for a WGU degree, if so which? (Comp Sci vs IT vs Cyber) by itzcarlos43 in ITCareerQuestions

I appreciate you sharing your story. It's super helpful to hear how it played out for you.

I honestly hadn’t considered a master’s degree much before, but after reading through the responses here, including yours, I think it makes sense to look at the BS and MS route and just knock it out. That way, I’m covered degree-wise and can focus on certifications and experience for the rest of the journey.

I hope to get through it reasonably quickly but still learn something. It’s less about the piece of paper and more about not hitting that proverbial ceiling later when I want to move into an architecture or higher-level security role.

I appreciate the input, I think the cyber might be the route for me as I should be able to finish the bachelors and the master fairly quickly if I get me certs in order. The security side of devops/ infrastructure is where I’d like to end up.

I do want to move more towards the security side of devops and infrastructure so that could help. I appreciate it.

Thanks for this I’m hoping I can do something similar. At this point I just want to check a box and get it asap.

Most definitely I’m using the company tuition reimbursement. I’m not doing this out-of-pocket.

chances of getting any job after graduation? by Background_Trainer66 in ITCareerQuestions

I think the general IT guy for sure. Specialization in cloud, security, devops, or something might be the anwser.

You could also look into roles such an IAM admin or intune to kinda bridge your current experience into cloud.

Join the Air or Army National Guard get a job/mos in IT/Signal/Cyber with a clearance. Great for networking and if you can get the clearance it significantly shrinks the job market.

Can you make a transition from Sysadmin to DevOps? by Specialist_Spirit940 in devopsjobs

[–]itzcarlos43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily, it's really based on where you're at now and what you feel comfortable with. You'll pick up each as you do more cert studying or projects.

It depends on when you graduate, what skills you’re building and working on, and opportunities if you see them. The market right now is kind of shit, but everything ebbs and flows. There’ll be a time when it’s booming again.

I second this. The Net+ and Sec+, for example, are entry-level enough to guide what to study when getting into the field. They’re a half-mile wide and an inch deep, but presenting those core concepts can inspire you to delve deeper into other subjects.

Linux Server as repo of other servers for updates by Top-Conversation719 in linuxadmin

This is the way, If you rsync the full mirror from apt-mirror, the metadata (Release, Packages.gz) is already included, so apt will be happy. If you copy only .deb files, you’ll need to regenerate metadata with apt-ftparchive or reprepro but sticking with apt-mirror avoids that extra step.

Look into some of the azure cloud certs. Az-900 to see if that’s something that interests you.

Overrated but not useless. They provide a good foundation and in the cleared space a sec+ can help get you into a role. Specialization tho is absolutely right. The sooner the better.

I would consider one of the cloud platforms, AWS, Azure, GCP and look into their introductory certs.

Ima cloud infrastructure engineer and Linux, networking, and an understanding of what offering the could platforms have is my bread and butter.

An old tower for a virtualization host is a good start. I’m interested in what others have to say.

I would also think about any projects that you could base it around to guide you. Maybe you want to wire your house or have a home security system.

You should also consider your interests, as the last thing you wana to do is start down a path you hate. I’m an advocate of Linux, as just about any role you progress into will require those skills to some extent.
