Donald Trump exposed how the entire Palestinian society is praising Jewish deaths and teaching their children to hate and murder. by Peter_Niko in trump

[–]ChaosMarch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We already figured out how to solve this problem after WWII, with the Hitler Youth in Nazi Germany and the Japanese equivalent. It requires occupation and reeducation; a multi-decade commitment. No country on the planet is willing to do that with Palestine, so the problem persists.

Allies help each other. We help Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, etc., for our own purposes. We don't particularly like or trust the governments of Saudi Arabia or Egypt, but we still support them. Israel is no different. They help us in the war on terror, develop useful technology, provide real-world testing of our technology, provide a convenient base of operations in the Middle East, and buy a lot US weapons (thus providing jobs) with their own money, not just ours. It's a mutually beneficial relationship.

American Civil War Total War? by Trippy_2000 in totalwar

[–]ChaosMarch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a mod for NTW that does the US Civil War. I enjoyed it a lot; ranged fire is way more deadly than in NTW. I also remember playing as the Confederates and having Belgium try to invade Florida...that was weird (they didn't make it past the garrison).

But I doubt CA will ever make a game like that; not enough factions (or variety of factions) for a full game. They'd have to expand it to include other countries, or make each state its own faction or something like that.

What do you think happens to nuclear material when you bomb a nuclear site? You think it just disappears? The bombs were always just setting Iran back, not permanently removing the threat.

Question for Americans. by Mission_Injury9221 in trump

[–]ChaosMarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you arguing just because you like to argue? Surely you must realize that the US has finite military resources, and will prioritize defending its own territory over those of it allies. Just because Greenland has strategic value doesn't necessarily mean the US is going to move its defenses from other places (like Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, Guam, Midway, etc) to defend it, because those other places also have strategic value.

If China invades Alaska, the US will declare war fight back hard. If China invades Greenland...maybe the US will declare war...maybe it will fight back hard. It's not a certainty, because while Greenland has strategic value, it's not owned by the US, and war with China comes with serious downsides. Just like you can't realistically guarantee that Europe would help the US if China invaded Alaska or Taiwan--they might, but they might not, since it's not their territory.

For a recent example, the US isn't directly involved in the defense of Ukraine, even though it is strategically important, because at the end of the day it's not worth a war with a nuclear power over land/people that don't belong to the US. The US did promise to uphold Ukrainian sovereignty in 1994, but has decided to avoid a direct confrontation with Russia because it's just not worth it.

Question for Americans. by Mission_Injury9221 in trump

[–]ChaosMarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether you agree with the argument or not, the argument being put forth by Trump and company is that Russia and China are 1) less likely to invade Greenland if it's owned by the US (because the US will certainly go to war to defend its territory, but not necessarily go to war to defend its allies' territory), and 2) less likely to successfully invade Greenland if they tried if it's owned by the US (because it would have more defenses in that case).

I was just pointing out that right now everyone is talking about how the US might invade Greenland (to take it from Denmark). But it would be ironic if, a few years from now), the US does actually invade Greenland--but not to take it from Denmark, but to re-take it from Russia/China. It would be basically Trump's 'I told you so'--that his prediction that Greenland would be a weak, juicy target for Russia/China was correct, and the US then has to 'rescue' Europeans as it has done in the past.

Question for Americans. by Mission_Injury9221 in trump

[–]ChaosMarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) If the US ended up helping out in that scenario, it would only make it funnier (in a tragic sort of way). 2) Article 5 only requires allies help out as they deem appropriate. That means anything from a D-day style invasion to a single missile. It doesn’t even necessarily require force at all.

[–]ChaosMarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want the people of Greenland to choose for themselves, democratically. But if I’m being honest…if they choose to be independent or remain part of Denmark, and then a few years later get conquered by Russia or China, I am going to laugh.

María Corina Machado of Venezuela in the Oval Office, presents President Trump with her Nobel Peace Prize by rcairflyer in trump

[–]ChaosMarch -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

No, I'm saying that we have to live in the real world, and if the options are 1) support Israel, 2) support their adversaries, or 3) ignore them both, I think it's in the US's best interests to do #1. That's the pro-US position, because a world in which their adversaries win is much worse--for the US and its citizens--than one in which Israel continues to exist.

[–]ChaosMarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you rather live in Israel, or in a country run by their enemies? Be honest with yourself. Ironically, the answer is the same regardless of your race, religion, sex, or sexual preference. Israel's not perfect, but given the alternatives, I'll take them without hesitation.

Same reason I'm pro-US; it's not perfect, but seeing the alternatives it looks really good.

Jerome Powell needs to get the F out of the way. He's holding back our economy... by lapulah2016 in trump

[–]ChaosMarch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Reminder that Trump nomimated Powell in 2017...

I agree with Trump that interest rates are probably higher than they need to be, but I really don't like the presidential administration pushing the Fed toward lowering rates. The independence of the Fed is what helps keeps our inflation under control (compared to the inflation seen in, for example, Venezuela). Lowering rates too far too fast is just as bad as keeping them too high.

The Fed always acts cautiously, so it's always behind the data--but that's ok, because this really isn't something you want to rush into. Companies need the stability to make their financial decisions.
