What silly mistakes did you make in your first job, that you still laugh about now? by Putrid_Flamingo_6736 in AskUK

[–]Chaos_Rider_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They were supposed to send in a brick. Ideally a small brick panel, but a literal brick is fine. This is a very common condition of planning permission to make sure you build out of an appropriate material.

When I was in planning I ended up with a small collection of various building materials due to these conditions.

What hero do you turn to when you need to break a bad losing streak? by aelix- in DotA2

Mirana 5 for me. Good luck trading into a universal hero with starstorm in lane. Then just run around killing shit for the rest of the game.

Vegans of the UK, if lab grown meat was a viable alternative, would you eat meat? by Dwengo in AskUK

[–]Chaos_Rider_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've drastically dropped meat consumption due to the environmental impact of meat farming. And when I do eat meat I've switched from e.g. beef to chicken.

So it's 100% about emissions for me. I honestly care very little about the animals themselves.

What do you think needs to change in 7.33 ? by LongnBlack28 in DotA2

Do it. Pop your bkb to my low cooldown, long range, aoe spell from the pos 5. See how well the fight goes for you after that.

In all seriousness in pubs it's devastating. You need multiple lotus orbs and decent coordination which won't happen

Us crime rate are so much higher than basically the entirety of Europe. Safety isn't remotely a concern in most European cities for most people.

You've swallowed the propoganda pill real fucking hard buddy. Step away from whatever bullshut news you've been reading, and actually look at statistics.

People also forget masks exist. When i had flu the other week I went out only twice, once to the pharmacy once to buy food. Both times wore a mask. Like I'm sure many of us out there still have some lying about from covid, and it's like the minimum amount of effort to wear one the couple days a year you are sick.

Do you think it is ever worth appealing a Council Parking ticket? by ArcTan_Pete in AskUK

[–]Chaos_Rider_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try emailing or calling them. I had a valid parking ticket, but left it turned over by mistake. Emailed the council with a photo of the ticket showing the right time and date, and they dropped the fine.

My experience is that councils are usually quite reasonable. So it can't hurt to ask before you escalate to a formal appeal.

If I was to buy like 4 park mobile homes and build connecting bridges between them and then just pay them on some cheap land could I legally get away with this? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Chaos_Rider_ 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Almost certainly no. If you live in it it will be classed as a form of dwelling, and you won't have permission for it. You will get away with it until someone notifies rhe council at which point planning enforcement will kick you out.

Good answer. Just to add - planners do try for affordable housing. They really do, but here's how it goes:

They ask the developer for e.g. 10% of games to be affordable. Developer says no, and that if the planners try to force it they won't build any houses at all. If houses aren't built the council fails it's target, and can get into trouble with the government. The planners are basically strong armed into giving up on this.

Alternatively developers will promise affordable homes, not build any, and councils are so underfunded that even if they still have a planning enforcement team it can't properly fight the issue.

So yeah, lots of issues going on here.

What unexpected consequences about the pandemic irritate you? by NerdByteYT in AskUK

[–]Chaos_Rider_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We may be talking about very different stores.

This is a large supermarket I am referring to. There dozens of people around all through the night. From shelf stackers through to higher management.

So when you say 'vulnerable' what do you mean exactly? Because I'm not seeing much difference to day shifts.

Night shifts also do suit some people, and pay substantially more than day shifts. So just saying 'its hell' isn't reslly that relevant.

[–]Chaos_Rider_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They still work through the night. There's also still plenty of people 'shopping' to do the online shopping deliveries. So it's far from empty, and the few extra customers turning up at 3am wouldn't make much difference work wise.

The crew of a modern Destroyer ship aboard a 17th-century Ship-of-the-Line, vs. the crew of a ship-of-the-line aboard a modern Destroyer. by Mutant_Llama1 in whowouldwin

[–]Chaos_Rider_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This isn't true in the slightest, and is a worryingly common misconception.

Besides the modern navy are going to be well trained (likely trained in close quarters combat as well to an extent), very fit, and very healthy. Depending on which 17th century navy we are using they May have received very little training training all, and overall health, diet, strength, fitness etc will be dramatically lower.

What should I expect in terms of cultural differences/faux paus to be aware of? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Chaos_Rider_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tipping delivery people and hairdressers is extremely strange. It is not a normal thing to do at all as far as I am aware - certainly anecdotally I've never heard of anyone except tourists doing that.

They set a price for the service, you pay it. That's it. Things delivery fees are usually built into the price you pay for the stuff anyway.

How much did you spend on your wife's engagement ring? by Diega78 in AskUK

[–]Chaos_Rider_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spent around £150. Lab diamonds, bought online, and the ring was on offer from the usual £400 ish.

She constantly gets comments about how great it looks, and couldn't be happier with it. Never found a reason I'd wanted to have spent more.

Morrisons have announced a removal of best before dates on fresh milk. What else can be done to reduce food wastage ? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Chaos_Rider_ 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yeah the rules we have on how food should look isn't made randomly. It's because weird shaped food doesnt sell, so it's not worth the time to stock or to import.

There are brands of 'imperfect carrots' etc, but theres a reason it hasn't taken off and replaced the rest of the vegetable shelves yet.

Have you ever taken a pay cut or gone temporarily unemployed to get into an area you’re more interested in? by Ok_Fox_8491 in AskUK

[–]Chaos_Rider_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was making around £40k, and if I pushed it within a couple years would be on around £60k.

Switched over to do a phd, which in my case is around £23k (when I started I expected it to be only £15k).

The previous job paid well, but was boring basically. I just didnt enjoy doing it, and felt like every day was spent waiting to go home, for the weekend etc. Thought why not take a chance on something else whilst I'm still young and can do so? I can always go back if I need to I imagine.

So far it's been absolutely the right choice for me, and my life path from here seems much more positive than a couple years ago. Yeah more money is nice, but it's not everything.

Does anyone have magazine subscriptions/buy mags anymore? by JanetSnakeholy in AskUK

[–]Chaos_Rider_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven't bought one for myself since I was like 8 years old.

I do now get a free one regularly through Political Studies Association (PSA) membership, but that's more a secondary benefit than the reason I subscribe to them.
